Google lists Pixel Watch 3 updates through October 2027, three years after its October 2024 launch. That is shorter on paper than Samsung’s historical promise of up to four years of One UI Watch and Wear OS upgrades. Apple does not publish the same kind of fixed-year guarantee, but watchOS 26 supports Apple Watch Series 6, a model introduced in 2020. These figures are useful context, not directly interchangeable measures of support.
For a buyer, the practical choice depends on phone compatibility, which updates a manufacturer actually promises, battery life, and how long the watch is likely to remain useful—not just the number of years in a comparison table.
What Google promises for Pixel Watch 3
Google’s Pixel Watch update policy lists Pixel Watch 3 as launched in October 2024 and eligible for updates through October 2027. Google says updates may include operating-system updates, security enhancements, new features, and bug fixes.
That is a stated three-year support window, not a promise of three major Wear OS version upgrades. Google does not say that every new feature or OS release will reach the watch, nor does the date guarantee a particular monthly update schedule. The policy is also specific to Pixel Watch 3: it should not be applied to the first- or second-generation Pixel Watch, or to later models.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
October 2027 is not a shutdown date. The watch should not suddenly stop working when the listed update period ends. Rather, that date marks the end of Google’s published update-support window. Afterward, the watch may continue to tell time and run compatible apps, but the absence of a stated future update commitment makes security coverage and feature stagnation more important concerns.
Google’s phone policy is separate; Pixel phone support figures do not apply to the watch. See Google’s Pixel phone update policy and its separate Pixel Watch policy.
How the three ecosystems compare
| Platform and example | Published support picture | Security wording | Phone requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel Watch 3 | Google lists updates through October 2027, three years after the October 2024 launch. | Google’s description includes security enhancements, alongside OS updates, features, and bug fixes. | Android phone. |
| Apple Watch | No equivalent fixed-year guarantee is stated in the sources reviewed. Apple’s watchOS 26 compatibility list reaches back to Series 6, introduced in 2020. | Apple’s compatibility approach is not presented as the same public year-count promise. | iPhone required. watchOS 26 requires an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 26, according to Apple’s announcement. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | Samsung historically promised up to four years of One UI Watch and Wear OS upgrades for eligible watches. Five years is reported for Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, not established as a policy for every model. | “OS upgrades” should not automatically be read as a separate four- or five-year security-patch guarantee. | Android phone; some features are optimized for Samsung Galaxy phones. |
Compatibility and feature availability can depend on the watch model, phone, region, and carrier. For Samsung’s current Galaxy Watch8 lineup, see its official product page; it does not clearly state a support duration.
Apple: a long compatibility record, not a six-year guarantee
Apple’s current watchOS 26 compatibility list includes Apple Watch Series 6 through Series 11, Apple Watch SE 2 and SE 3, and Ultra models. Apple’s watchOS 26 announcement likewise says the release is available for Series 6 or later, SE 2nd generation, and all Ultra models, paired with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.
Series 6 debuted in 2020, so its inclusion in the 2026 compatibility picture shows roughly six years of practical compatibility by model age. It is strong evidence of Apple’s support longevity, but not a promise that every Apple Watch will receive six years of updates. Nor does compatibility mean every new feature will work on every supported watch: hardware requirements can exclude older models from particular features.
The ecosystem requirement matters as much as the update record. Apple Watch requires an iPhone; it is not a viable choice for an Android-phone owner simply because its compatibility history looks longer.
Rank #2
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Samsung: separate the official four-year policy from newer reporting
Samsung’s official announcement says it will provide up to four years of One UI Watch and Wear OS upgrades for eligible Galaxy Watches. “Up to” matters: it is not a guarantee that every watch receives four years, and the statement concerns OS upgrades. It should not be rewritten as four years of security patches without a separate applicable policy. Update timing can also vary with model, region, and carrier.

Treat that as a model-specific reported policy, not an official, Samsung-wide five-year rule. The support claim should be confirmed for the exact model and market before it drives a purchase.
Samsung’s compatibility has its own constraint: Galaxy Watch is an Android option, not an iPhone alternative. Samsung says Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 cannot be set up with iOS; consult its compatibility guidance for details. On Android, some features may be limited outside Samsung phones.
Why the year counts are not equivalent
Google’s three years is a model-specific listed update period. Apple’s “about six years” here is an observation from a current OS compatibility list, not an announced fixed guarantee. Samsung’s four years is an “up to” OS-upgrade commitment for eligible devices, while the five-year figure is reported for two specifically identified newer models. Comparing those numbers as if they all measure the same thing would overstate what is known.
- Different update types: OS upgrades, security patches, bug fixes, app updates, and service changes can follow different schedules. A promise of OS upgrades alone does not establish the duration of security updates.
- Different start points and eligibility: Google lists a support end month for Pixel Watch 3. Samsung’s “up to” policy is model-dependent, and the reviewed material does not make every clock-start detail equivalent. Apple’s compatibility list shows which models run a release, not a universal promise from launch.
- Different feature sets: A watch can support a new OS while missing features that require newer sensors, processors, or other hardware. Region, phone model, and carrier can also affect availability.
- Different ecosystems: Apple Watch requires an iPhone. Pixel Watch is Android-only. Galaxy Watch requires Android, with some features best integrated with Samsung phones.
Nor is update duration the same as update speed. Google controls Pixel Watch hardware and its relationship with Wear OS; Samsung adds One UI Watch to Wear OS across a broader portfolio; Apple controls watch hardware, watchOS, iPhone integration, and distribution. That explains why update processes differ, but it does not establish a reliable speed ranking. Rollouts may vary by model, region, or carrier, and some changes arrive through apps or system components rather than a full OS upgrade.

Features may also arrive through Fitbit or other first-party app updates, watch-face and app updates, or server-side enablement. A platform’s latest OS version therefore does not, by itself, show how quickly every feature reaches every owner.

What can change after the listed support window?
There is no basis to assume that Pixel Watch 3 becomes unusable after October 2027—or to assume that every current function will remain supported indefinitely. Core watch functions may keep working while connected features evolve on separate schedules. Apps and cloud services can change independently of the watch OS.
Over time, an older watch could face compatibility issues if a future Android version no longer pairs cleanly, a third-party app requires a newer Wear OS version, or payment and authentication services change their security requirements. Health or fitness functions might continue to work while a cloud or subscription integration changes. These are risks to consider, not predictions that any particular Pixel Watch 3 feature will fail on a set date. Emergency, LTE, health, and payment features can also have separate market or carrier requirements.
Battery condition may end practical ownership earlier than software support does. Before buying any watch for long-term use, check whether the manufacturer offers battery service or replacement in your region, the cost and repair method, and whether water resistance is affected after service. A used watch’s remaining support runway starts from its original launch policy—not the day a second owner buys it. A refurbished Pixel Watch 3 bought late in its lifecycle may therefore have much less of Google’s stated window left.

Which watch makes sense for your phone and plans?
- You use a Pixel or another Android phone and expect to replace your watch within about three years: Pixel Watch 3 can still make sense, especially at a substantial discount. Its Google, Fitbit, Maps, Assistant/Gemini, and Wallet integration may matter more to you than the longest paper commitment. Check compatibility and feature availability for your particular phone.
- You use a Samsung Galaxy phone: Compare Galaxy Watch8 and the exact eligible model you are considering. Samsung integration and model choice may be decisive; verify that the update commitment applies to that watch rather than borrowing the reported five-year figure for Watch 9 and Watch Ultra 2.
- You use an iPhone: Apple Watch is the practical choice among these ecosystems. Its current compatibility list offers strong evidence of long practical support, but it is not a fixed-year guarantee, and an Android user cannot simply switch to it.
- You plan to keep a watch for five years or more: Favor the clearest model-specific support evidence you can find. Apple has the strongest demonstrated compatibility record in this comparison; a specifically eligible Samsung model may offer a longer stated window. Pixel Watch 3’s published period ends in October 2027, so it is not the strongest choice on support runway alone.
- You are buying used or refurbished: Check original launch date, remaining published support, battery health, service options, phone compatibility, and any carrier or regional limitations. A low purchase price does not restore elapsed support years.
There is no subscription inherently required just to receive OS updates. Optional services such as Fitbit Premium or Apple Fitness+ are separate decisions and should not be counted as part of an update guarantee.
Verdict: Pixel Watch 3’s three-year listed window is shorter on paper than Samsung’s historical up-to-four-year OS-upgrade commitment, and Apple’s current compatibility list shows a longer practical runway for some hardware. But it is not a direct, like-for-like comparison—and it does not make Pixel Watch 3 obsolete or automatically unsafe after October 2027. Buy around your phone, expected ownership period, battery-service prospects, and the specific model’s confirmed policy.
