A July 7, 2024 report on four Google FCC filings pointed to a substantial connectivity upgrade for the upcoming Pixel Watch 3: Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and dual-band Wi-Fi across the apparent lineup, alongside LTE on two models. The filing did not prove that UWB would unlock cars or deliver any specific new feature. Google later confirmed the watch’s core radios and launched it on September 10, 2024. Droid Life’s original report is best read as an early, partly inferential look—not a full product announcement.
What the FCC report found
Droid Life reported that four Google devices had appeared in FCC records under model numbers GBDU9, GRY0E, GG3HH, and GGE4J. The filings were described as showing two LTE devices and two Bluetooth/Wi-Fi devices. References to testing five straps also helped support the interpretation that the products were watches.
The most notable radio details were UWB in all four apparent variants and support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi. The LTE filings were also associated with 802.11ax, the technical designation for Wi-Fi 6. These details suggested more capable connectivity than a basic Bluetooth-only watch, but they did not reveal every feature or definitively map each FCC number to a retail configuration.

That distinction matters: the model numbers and radio information came from regulatory records as reported by Droid Life; identifying the devices as Pixel Watch 3 variants was the report’s interpretation. Google’s later specifications confirmed UWB and dual-band Wi-Fi for Pixel Watch 3. Google’s specifications list Wi-Fi 2.4GHz and 5GHz, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, UWB, and 4G LTE/UMTS on cellular models.

Why UWB was the surprising part
Ultra-Wideband is a short-range radio technology that can help compatible devices determine distance and direction more precisely than ordinary Bluetooth. That can enable precise finding and other proximity-aware functions when the watch, the other device, and their software support the same feature.
It is not satellite connectivity, and it is not simply a faster version of Bluetooth. The July report floated the possibility of using UWB for things such as unlocking a compatible vehicle. That was speculation about what the radio might eventually enable—not evidence that Pixel Watch 3 launched with universal car-key support. UWB in a specification does not make every car, phone, or smart-home product compatible.
Dual-band Wi-Fi helps beyond the LTE models
Pixel Watch 3 supports Wi-Fi on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Google’s compatibility listing includes 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, so the final specifications confirm Wi-Fi 6 compatibility. The benefit is flexibility: 2.4GHz generally reaches farther, while 5GHz can offer access to less congested channels at shorter range. Actual results depend on the router, network settings, distance, interference, and software.

Both versions need an Android phone for setup and pairing; phone-free features vary according to whether the watch can connect to Wi-Fi, has LTE service, and supports the particular app or function.

How four filings matched the eventual lineup
In July 2024, the natural theory was two sizes multiplied by two connectivity options: a smaller and larger watch, each offered as Bluetooth/Wi-Fi or LTE. The report did not establish which FCC number corresponded to which size. Google later announced the Pixel Watch 3 in 41mm and 45mm sizes, with both Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE configurations, making that four-way interpretation consistent with the final lineup.
The four filings therefore offered an early hint about the range, but not a definitive retail map. The FCC information should not be treated as proof that every model number corresponded one-to-one with a specific size and sales configuration.
What LTE adds—and what it costs in commitment
The LTE version can handle selected functions away from the paired phone once it is activated on a compatible carrier plan. Depending on carrier, location, service, and setup, those can include calls and texts, music streaming, Google Pay, Google Assistant, and Emergency SOS. Google says full talk, text, and data functionality requires the watch and paired Android phone to use the same carrier network; availability varies by country and carrier. LTE requires a separate service plan, and cellular use can affect battery life.
“LTE” does not mean unrestricted smartphone-level service. Coverage, signal strength, congestion, roaming rules, plan restrictions, and regional support all matter. Google also says LTE models can use Emergency SOS when the phone is not charged, subject to service and regional limitations; that is not a guarantee of connectivity everywhere.

Pixel Watch 3’s launch, in retrospect
Google released Pixel Watch 3 on September 10, 2024. Its announced U.S. launch prices were $349.99 for the 41mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model, $449.99 for 41mm LTE, $399.99 for 45mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, and $499.99 for 45mm LTE. Those are historical launch prices, not current prices or a claim about present availability. Google’s announcement records the launch date and original pricing.
The broader specifications included Wear OS 5.0, 32GB storage, 2GB SDRAM, NFC, and 5 ATM and IP68 water- and dust-resistance ratings. For phone compatibility, Google lists most Android phones running Android 10 or newer; an iPhone is not a supported pairing option. Features and services can vary by region.
Which connectivity version makes sense?
- Choose Bluetooth/Wi-Fi if your phone is usually nearby, you want to avoid a recurring cellular bill, and Wi-Fi is enough for occasional phone-free connectivity. You still get the watch’s UWB, NFC, Bluetooth, and dual-band Wi-Fi features.
- Choose LTE if you regularly exercise or go out without your phone and want calls, messaging, streaming, or other supported services on your wrist. Check that your carrier supports Pixel Watch 3 activation and account for the additional plan cost.
For a buyer considering the watch now, Pixel Watch 3 is a previous-generation product. Its 2024 launch price should not be used to estimate what it costs today; compare current retailer offers and the price of newer models before deciding. The original FCC story is still notable, but its practical message is narrower than “shocking” might suggest: Google put UWB and stronger Wi-Fi capabilities into the watch family, while LTE remained an optional, carrier-dependent way to stay connected without a phone nearby.
