Some original Google Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 owners encountered a blank, unresponsive screen while installing Wear OS 5 in September 2024. Google acknowledged the problem and paused that rollout on September 26, then resumed it in November 2024 with a new build. The incident was real, but Google did not say every watch was affected or permanently damaged.
If your watch is black now, the timing matters: a screen failure today is not automatically the same 2024 update issue. Start with Google’s restart and forced-restart steps below; if the watch stays blank, will not charge, or appears physically damaged, contact Google support rather than assuming a reset will fix it.
What happened during the Wear OS 5 rollout?
Google announced Wear OS 5 for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 in September 2024. After some owners reported that their watches became unresponsive or stuck on a blank screen after the over-the-air update, Google paused distribution on September 26. Its notice described “some Pixel Watch 1 and 2 users” as stuck on a blank screen; it did not publish a failure rate or a detailed technical explanation. Google resumed the update in November 2024. The global build was AW2A.241105.012; a France-specific Orange LTE build was AW2A.241105.013. Distribution was phased, and Google said the update included Wear OS 5, features, bug fixes, performance updates, and certain Play Store updates. The public notice does not establish that this build recovered every watch that had already gone blank. Google’s November rollout announcement has the build and rollout details.

Which Pixel Watch models were affected?

Reports described watches stuck during startup, unable to pair, or showing a black screen, sometimes with a Bluetooth-related icon. That can make a watch seem “bricked,” but Google’s public wording was that some devices were stuck on a blank screen—not that the update had irreversibly destroyed every affected watch. A black display can also stem from a frozen system, charging or power trouble, a display fault, or physical damage.
Try Google’s recovery steps in order
Use the following sequence from Google’s blank or frozen Pixel Watch troubleshooting guide. A forced restart is different from a factory reset: the former does not intentionally erase the watch.
1. Try a normal restart
- Press and hold the crown for about 3 seconds.
- Scroll down and tap Restart.
If the screen is frozen or blank, this may not be possible; move to a forced restart.
2. Force-restart the watch
- Press and hold the crown and side button together.
- Keep holding for about 35 seconds, or longer if needed.
- Release when the G logo appears and let the watch restart.
If that does not work, connect the watch properly to its model-appropriate charger and repeat the forced restart. The original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 use different charging arrangements, so verify that the charger is correct and aligned for your model. A watch that appears dead may have a charging problem, but a replacement charger will not fix a failed display or a corrupted boot state.

3. Factory-reset only if the watch can show menus
A factory reset deletes apps, settings, and data stored on the watch. Use it after the restart attempts, not as the first move—especially if you may have unsynced activity or other local data.
- On the watch: Swipe down, open Settings, tap Disconnect & reset, then tap OK.
- In the Google Pixel Watch app: Open the app, tap System, then Reset and unpair watch.
Google does not promise that a factory reset will recover every blank-screen device.
4. Use recovery mode only if the earlier steps fail and the display is usable
Google’s recovery-mode procedure requires interacting with the watch’s screen. If the display is completely dead, you may not be able to complete it.

- Uninstall the Google Pixel Watch app from your phone.
- Use the watch’s side button to highlight Recovery Mode, then press the crown.
- When No Command appears, press and hold the crown while swiping up on the screen.
- On the debug screen, choose Wipe Data or Factory Reset, then swipe right to reset.
- After the wipe, choose Reboot system now.
Do not insert pins, paper clips, or other objects into the microphone hole or charging-pin area. Google warns that this can damage the watch. Stop troubleshooting if the watch becomes unusually hot, appears swollen, or has physical damage.

Is a black screen the Wear OS 5 failure?
The strongest clue is whether the blank screen began immediately after installing the September 2024 update on an original Pixel Watch or Pixel Watch 2. A black screen that started at another time—or on another model—may have a different cause.
- Does the watch vibrate when you press its buttons?
- Does it show a charging animation when connected to the correct charger?
- Can the Pixel Watch app still detect it?
- Does the G logo appear after the 35-second forced restart?
- Was the watch dropped, exposed to liquid, or showing display problems before the update?
Vibration, charging behavior, or phone detection may indicate that some functions remain active, but they do not identify the fault. This is a troubleshooting clue, not a diagnosis. A dim screen, a watch that went black after powering off, or a screen failure after a drop should not automatically be attributed to the 2024 update. Pixel Watch 3 complaints reported separately are not evidence that it was part of Google’s acknowledged incident.
When to contact Google
Contact Google Pixel Watch support if the display remains black after a charged forced restart, the G logo never appears, the watch will not charge, it repeatedly reboots, a factory reset fails, or there is visible damage. Stop if it becomes unusually hot. Check warranty or protection-plan eligibility with support; coverage and replacement decisions depend on factors such as region, purchase date, plan terms, and the device assessment. The public incident notices do not promise a free replacement for every affected watch.

Google acknowledged the 2024 issue, paused and then resumed the update, but did not publish a root-cause report, the number of affected devices, or a recovery rate. If your watch is currently unresponsive, follow the official steps and seek support if they fail rather than assuming it is permanently bricked—or that the November build fixed it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my Pixel Watch permanently bricked?
Not necessarily. A blank screen does not by itself prove permanent hardware damage. Try Google’s restart and forced-restart steps; if the watch remains blank, contact support for diagnosis.
Does a hard reset erase watch data?
The forced restart—holding the crown and side button until the G logo appears—is not a factory reset. A factory reset erases apps, settings, and data stored on the watch.
Does a factory reset erase Fitbit data?
It erases data stored on the watch. The available Google instructions do not specify what happens to every category of Fitbit data, so do not assume unsynced information is preserved; allow syncing where possible before resetting.

Google’s acknowledgement named some original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 users. It did not identify Pixel Watch 3 as part of that incident.

Should I install Wear OS 5 now?
Google resumed the Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 rollout in November 2024. The September 2024 pause is historical, not evidence of a current widespread outage. Check the update offered for your specific model and region.
Can Google replace an affected watch for free?
The public rollout notices do not promise free replacements. Google support can assess the device; eligibility depends on warranty, region, purchase date, and any applicable protection-plan terms.
What if the screen is black but the watch still vibrates?
That suggests some functions may still be operating, but it does not establish whether the issue is software or display hardware. Try the official forced restart, then contact support if the screen stays blank.

Confirm that you are using the correct charger for your Pixel Watch generation and that it is properly connected. If the watch still will not charge, or becomes unusually hot, stop troubleshooting and contact support.
