Google began rolling out the Pixel Watch May 2024 update on May 6, 2024. The Wear OS 4 update uses build TWD9.240505.001.A1 and moves supported watches to the May 5, 2024 security patch level.
This was a security-focused release for supported Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 models—not a major feature update. Google distributed it in phases, so some owners saw it later depending on their device and carrier.
What was included in the May 2024 Pixel Watch update?
The update was based on Wear OS 4 and primarily delivered the latest security patches. Google did not publish a detailed feature changelog for this release, and there was no documented Feature Drop or major user-facing change.

Google’s official announcement described the update as providing the latest security patches. It did not promise improvements to battery life, fitness tracking, auto-brightness, vibration, the app grid, Dynamic Color, watch faces or Wear OS 5. Those changes should not be attributed to this May release.
Which Pixel Watch models were eligible?
Google’s wording was “all supported Pixel Watch devices running Wear OS 4.” Contemporary reporting identified the eligible product family as:
- The original Google Pixel Watch, in Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and LTE configurations
- Google Pixel Watch 2, in Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and LTE configurations
LTE and Wi-Fi models could receive the update at different times because Google said availability depended on the carrier and device. The announcement did not provide a country-by-country schedule.

This rollout predates the Pixel Watch 3, which did not exist in May 2024. Do not assume that the May 2024 build applies to later Pixel Watch generations.
How to install the update
- Swipe down on the watch face.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap System updates.
- Allow the watch to check for an available update.
Before installation, Google recommends placing the watch on its charger, charging it to at least 50%, and connecting it to Wi-Fi. The watch may be temporarily unusable while it prepares, restarts and applies the update, so leave it undisturbed until the process finishes.

- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
How to verify the build and security level
After the watch restarts, check its software details:
- Open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Tap About.
- Tap Versions.
Look for build TWD9.240505.001.A1 and a security update dated May 5, 2024. Menu labels can vary slightly by software version, but the build number and security patch level are the useful confirmation points.
Why the update may not appear immediately
Google said the rollout would occur in phases over approximately one week. Availability depended on the watch and, for LTE models, the carrier. As a result, seeing “Your watch is up to date” on May 6 did not necessarily mean the watch was excluded.

- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
A delayed notification was normal during the staged rollout. A watch could also postpone installation if it was not charging, had insufficient battery or lacked a suitable Wi-Fi connection.

- Put the watch on its charger.
- Make sure the battery is at least 50% charged.
- Connect the watch to Wi-Fi.
- Return to Settings > System > System updates.
- Restart the watch if the update check appears stuck, then check again.
- If necessary, temporarily turn off Bluetooth so the watch attempts to use Wi-Fi, and repeat the check.
Disabling Bluetooth was also reported as a way to encourage a Wi-Fi-based check, but it is not a guaranteed force-update command. 9to5Google additionally reported that repeatedly tapping the “Your watch is up to date” screen could prompt another check or download. Treat that as a reported workaround rather than a universal, officially documented method.
Do not factory-reset the watch merely because the OTA is delayed. A reset erases watch data and settings and is not a first-line solution to a normal phased rollout.

- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]

- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]

- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
What security issues did it address?
The May 2024 Pixel Watch security bulletin states that a patch level of May 5, 2024 or later addressed applicable issues from the Android Security Bulletin and Pixel Watch bulletin. Pixel Watch security coverage also incorporates relevant Wear OS and Pixel-specific fixes.
The May 2024 Wear OS bulletin listed, among other issues:
- CVE-2024-23700: Information disclosure, rated critical
- CVE-2024-23701: Elevation of privilege, rated high
- CVE-2024-23702: Elevation of privilege, rated high
- CVE-2024-23703: Elevation of privilege, rated high
The bulletin described the most severe issue as potentially allowing local privilege escalation by a malicious application. That does not mean every watch configuration was necessarily exploitable in the same way, or that the issue represented a remote attack in every case. The practical conclusion is simpler: install the update when it becomes available.

What this update was not
The May release should not be confused with:
- The April 2024 update, which Google described as including features, bug fixes and performance improvements
- A later Pixel Watch Feature Drop
- Wear OS 5
- Pixel Watch 3 software or features
The lack of visible new features after installation is therefore expected. This was primarily a maintenance and security release.
Should you install it immediately?
Yes, once the update is offered to a supported watch. Because the release was security-focused, installing it is preferable to remaining on an older patch level. If it has not appeared during the staged rollout, waiting while following Google’s charging, Wi-Fi and restart guidance is reasonable. Unofficial flashing is unnecessary for most owners.
Although OTA images were discussed by contemporary coverage, sideloading requires an exact match for the watch model and software path. Using the wrong package can cause data loss or leave the watch unusable. The Wear OS bulletin directs users to the device supplier for firmware images rather than providing a general consumer flashing procedure.
