The November 2024 Pixel Watch update was more than a security patch for some owners: reporting at the time said Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 also received Wear OS 5, while Pixel Watch 3 received security and bug fixes. Google’s next major update was planned for March 2025; it ultimately arrived on March 4 as Wear OS 5.1 for supported Pixel Watch generations.
What the November update included
The update did not give every Pixel Watch the same change. Pixel Watch 3 had already launched with Wear OS 5, so its November release was primarily maintenance. The first-generation Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2, by contrast, were reported to receive the Wear OS 5 upgrade as well as fixes and performance improvements. The model-by-model details below were reported by PiunikaWeb; the surfaced changelog is secondary reporting, so treat it as reported release information rather than a complete Google-issued bulletin.

That distinction matters: “the November security patch” was a useful shorthand, but not a complete description for Watch 1 and Watch 2 owners. Nor should app updates be confused with the watch’s core operating-system update. Play Store, Fitbit and individual Google apps can update on their own schedules, separately from the system firmware.

In November, March 2025 was the next planned major update—not a guarantee of a particular redesign or feature on a specific date. The phrase “big update” meant a platform release rather than an isolated app update or routine security patch. Google’s March 4 announcement confirmed the follow-up as Wear OS 5.1, with a phased rollout for supported Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 devices. The announced builds were BP1A.250305.019.W2 for Pixel Watch and BP1A.250305.019.W3 for Pixel Watch 2 and 3. See Google’s March update announcement.

The March release and associated Pixel Watch features included:
- Expanded media controls and audio controls.
- Improved step counting across Pixel Watches.
- Automatic Bedtime mode on Pixel Watch 2.
- Menstrual-health support on Pixel Watch 3 through the Fitbit app.
- Loss of Pulse Detection on Pixel Watch 3 in the United States, following FDA clearance. This was not a feature available everywhere.
- Additional bug fixes and performance improvements.
Google described these features in its March 2025 Pixel Drop. A Pixel Drop may include watch features delivered through a combination of system software and apps; it is not necessarily one single firmware change. Availability can depend on model, region, app version and account setup.

Why October was quiet—and what the cadence meant
Contemporaneous reporting said Google skipped the expected October 2024 Pixel Watch update, making November the next release. In November, March was identified as the next planned update. When that update arrived, Google identified June 2025 as the following target and described a quarterly update cadence. That history explains the gap, but it should not be read as proof that Google permanently ended monthly security fixes: the available announcements establish the planned cadence for those releases, not a blanket policy that every security fix would appear only quarterly.

A watch can receive a system release, a Google Play system or Play Store update, and individual app updates at different times. A missing feature does not necessarily mean the main firmware installation failed.

How to check for and install an update
- Put the watch on its charger and make sure it has adequate battery.
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap System, then System updates.
- Check for an update. If the update screen offers a watch icon or a check action, tap it to prompt another check.
Keep the watch connected to Wi-Fi or its paired phone as appropriate, and let the installation finish without removing it from the charger. A major OS upgrade can take longer than a small patch. Device behavior or battery use can vary temporarily after an upgrade; the available release information does not establish a guaranteed battery-life improvement.

A “Your watch is up to date” message may mean the rollout has not reached your device yet. Google said the March rollout was phased and could vary by carrier and device, so eligible watches did not necessarily receive it at the same time.

- Confirm the watch is charging and has a stable connection.
- Restart the watch, then return to Settings > System > System updates and check again.
- Allow time for a staged rollout rather than repeatedly resetting the device.
- Check the installed software version in the watch’s system settings before troubleshooting further.
- Do not factory-reset the watch as a first step. If it remains on an older release after the rollout period, consult Google Pixel Watch support.
There was also an April 2025 follow-up for some devices that remained on the November release path. Google’s April update information noted that some changes associated with the March release reached those devices through an April update, while the step-algorithm enhancement was excluded from that release. This is an example of why rollout status and feature availability can differ even among watches in the same family.
