Pixel Watch’s March 2025 Wear OS 5.1 update added a Developer options switch called Force Global AOD Experience. It can keep an app’s screen visible in a dimmed ambient state when you lower your wrist, rather than replacing an app without its own ambient display with a blurred screen and clock. It is a workaround—not a regular Always-on display setting or a guarantee that every app stays fully live.
What Force Global AOD changes
When you lower your wrist, a Wear OS app that has not implemented its own ambient display may normally give way to a blurred view and a digital clock. Some apps have their own ambient behavior; others lose the useful context of the screen you were viewing.
Force Global AOD Experience asks the system to keep the current app represented while the watch is in ambient mode. That can be useful for a stopwatch, workout, timer, navigation, or media screen. Expect a darker, simplified presentation—not the fully bright, interactive app interface. Text or graphics may look blockier, and some information may be omitted, frozen, or updated less often.

In other words, “always on” here does not mean the app is continuously running and refreshing exactly as it does when you raise your wrist. The switch provides a system-level fallback; it does not give an app a purpose-built ambient layout.

How to turn it on
The setting is in Developer options, not the regular Display or Always-on display menu. To find it on a Pixel Watch:
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Tap System, then About, then Versions.
- Tap Build number several times. Enter your PIN if prompted. This unlocks Developer options.
- Return to the main Settings screen and open Developer options.
- Scroll to the bottom and switch on Force Global AOD Experience.
Menu wording or placement can vary slightly by software build or language. If the path differs, search Settings for Developer options.

It is different from the normal Always-on display setting
The regular Always-on display setting determines whether the watch uses an ambient display when your wrist is down. Force Global AOD Experience changes how the current app is represented in ambient mode when that app would otherwise be replaced by the generic clock view. It does not substitute for enabling the watch’s normal AOD behavior.

Google began rolling out Wear OS 5.1 on March 4, 2025, to supported Pixel Watch models: Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, and Pixel Watch 3. The initial global builds were BP1A.250305.019.W2 for Pixel Watch and BP1A.250305.019.W3 for Pixel Watch 2 and 3. Google said the rollout was phased by device and carrier, so availability did not necessarily arrive for every watch at once. Google’s update announcement lists the rollout and builds.

- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
The option was specifically documented on Pixel Watch 2 in contemporary reporting, with availability also expected on Pixel Watch 3. Google’s update announcement covered the watches receiving Wear OS 5.1, but did not provide a per-model feature matrix for this Developer options switch. If you have a supported model and cannot find it, check the installed software version rather than assuming the setting is available on every build.
Trade-offs: app behavior and battery
The result can differ from app to app. An ambient screen may be crude or incomplete, and an app’s own lifecycle, session, or timeout rules still matter. If a value appears unchanged, do not assume the watch is refreshing it continuously. Treat the display as a glanceable ambient view, especially for workout metrics, timers, maps, and media controls.

- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
Keeping more of an app visible may use more power than allowing the watch to show a minimal clock. The impact depends on the app and what it is displaying: a mostly static, dark screen may have a different cost from content that updates frequently. No reliable universal battery-loss percentage is established. If endurance noticeably worsens, switch the option off and compare your usual use.

Consider enabling it for a particular need—such as checking a stopwatch or keeping a workout screen in view—rather than assuming it is the better setting for every app. Leave it off if battery life, privacy, or the readability of a specific app matters more than retaining that screen.
Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
If the option is missing or does not behave as expected
- No Developer options menu: Repeat the Build number steps under Settings → System → About → Versions, and enter your PIN if asked.
- No Force Global AOD Experience switch: Check the Wear OS version and build under Versions, then check for a system update. The rollout was phased; menu placement can also vary by build. A restart is a reasonable basic troubleshooting step.
- The app still returns to the watch face: The switch does not necessarily override separate screen-timeout, return-to-watch-face, or app-session behavior. Check those settings and test whether the app requires an active session.
- Information looks stale or incomplete: That can be a limitation of ambient mode or the app’s implementation. Raise your wrist to see the active interface, and do not rely on the dimmed display for continuously refreshed information.
- Battery life is worse: Turn the option off and compare under your normal routine. Brightness, connectivity, app workload, notifications, and battery condition all affect endurance.
A Wear OS 5.1-era workaround
Wear OS 5.1 was an earlier platform release, not a newly introduced 2026 feature. The March 2025 switch addressed a gap in how apps without their own ambient screens appeared when the wrist was lowered. Later, Google described Wear OS 6 as taking a more consistent system approach to ambient display behavior, with the previous top activity remaining visible in the resumed state. That broader direction helps explain the 5.1 option’s role: a useful system workaround, not a replacement for developers building proper ambient support into their apps. Contemporary Wear OS 6 reporting covers that later approach.
The original report on Force Global AOD describes the setting and its behavior. For the broader Wear OS 5.1 release context, see the Wear OS 5.1 feature overview.
