Google’s March 2025 Wear OS 5.1 update caused real problems for some Pixel Watch owners, especially delayed notifications and failures when editing watch faces from the phone app. But the warning that a fix could take months is now outdated: Google issued an April 2025 update addressing those two issues. If problems persist, check your watch’s software and notification settings before assuming the original bug is still responsible.
What happened with Wear OS 5.1?
Wear OS 5.1 arrived as part of Google’s March 2025 Pixel Watch software update, not as a standalone app update. Google announced the phased rollout on March 4 for Pixel Watch 1, Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. Rollout timing could vary by device type and carrier, so owners did not necessarily receive it on the same day. Google’s March update announcement listed these versions:
- Pixel Watch 1:
BP1A.250305.019.W2 - Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3:
BP1A.250305.019.W3
The update included the operating system and security changes alongside other software improvements. Google also listed expanded Auto Bedtime functionality for Pixel Watch 2. Those components are distinct from updates to the Pixel Watch phone app or Fitbit app and service; a problem syncing Fitbit data, for example, does not by itself establish that the watch’s operating system caused it.

Google acknowledged that delayed notifications affected “a very small number” of users, according to March 2025 reporting. In its April update notice, Google also specifically identified delayed notifications and the inability to modify or add watch faces through the Pixel Watch mobile app as problems addressed by the corrective release.

Reports across community discussions and news coverage are useful signals of what owners experienced, not a measure of how many devices were affected. The evidence does not show that all three generations were affected equally, or that every owner encountered a fault.
Google’s response: the April fix
After March reports of notification delays and watch-face editing failures, Google announced a corrective update on April 8, 2025. For devices already on the March release, the listed build was BP1A.250305.019.W7. Google said it addressed delayed notifications and the inability to modify or add watch faces from the Pixel Watch mobile app. The update applied to Pixel Watch 1, 2 and 3 devices on the March release, with rollout timing still phased. That makes the original “a fix could take months” prediction obsolete: the targeted fix was announced within weeks of the March update. It does not prove that the April release resolved every symptom people reported. The update notes name two issues; they do not promise a universal cure for Fitbit synchronization failures, freezes, battery complaints or other problems.

How to check your Pixel Watch and troubleshoot notifications
1. Check the installed software
On the watch, open Settings > System > System updates. Check the installed version and whether an update is available. The March versions were BP1A.250305.019.W2 for Pixel Watch 1 and BP1A.250305.019.W3 for Pixel Watch 2 and 3. The April corrective build listed for devices on the March release was BP1A.250305.019.W7.
These are historical incident builds, not a statement of the latest software available in 2026. Install any update offered to your watch rather than treating the April number as the current version. To make an update check, put the watch on its charger, ensure it has Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity, keep the paired phone on, and make sure the Pixel Watch app is updated. Restart both devices and check again. Do not try to downgrade or sideload firmware using an unverified procedure.
2. Rule out phone and connection settings
Notification delay is not automatically an operating-system bug. Google says normal delivery depends on the watch being connected by Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or an LTE plan, and the paired phone being powered on. Check the connection and confirm the phone has not disabled notifications for the affected app.

On an Android phone, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > Google Pixel Watch, then enable relevant notifications and check that they are not set to silent. Menu wording can vary by phone and Android version. Google’s notification troubleshooting guide provides the official checks.
3. Check Pixel Watch app controls
In the Google Pixel Watch app, open Notifications and then Manage watch notifications. If you expect alerts while using your phone, check that Mute notifications from phone is disabled. If silent alerts should appear on the watch, check that Hide silent notifications is disabled.
4. Check modes and wear detection
On the watch, open Settings > Vibration and review Silence watch when not being worn. Also swipe down from the watch face and check that Bedtime, Do Not Disturb and Theater mode are not suppressing alerts.

5. Re-pair only after simpler checks
If the software is current and the settings and connection look right, Google’s guidance includes unlinking the watch in the Pixel Watch app and pairing it again. Re-pairing may help if the phone-watch relationship has become corrupted, but it requires setup and reconfiguration; it is not the first step to take before installing updates and checking settings.
A factory reset is more disruptive and is not a guaranteed fix for a firmware or service-side problem. If you consider one, first check what data and settings will be retained and make sure you can set the watch up again. The fact that some users tried resets without resolving the reported problem is another reason not to start there.
Is the March bug likely to explain a problem now?
The original incident is a more plausible explanation if a symptom began immediately after the March 2025 update and the watch is still on a March build—particularly delayed notifications or phone-app watch-face editing that stopped working at that time. It is less likely to explain a new problem that started long afterward, or one limited to a single app, especially if the watch is already on a later release.

Before attributing late alerts to Wear OS, check Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, phone notification permissions, silent notification settings, Bedtime or Do Not Disturb, wear detection and whether the paired phone is on. A problem that remains after these checks and a current update merits support rather than an assumption that the March defect is still active. What the rollout schedule does—and does not—tell owners
Google’s March notice said the next planned update was expected in June 2025, followed by quarterly updates. That schedule can make a software regression feel more consequential if owners expect to wait for the next regular release. But it was not an absolute ceiling: Google announced an interim April fix for two named issues. Neither the quarterly cadence nor the April remedy should be taken to mean that every user’s problem was resolved by that patch.
This is a reason to check the build and use official troubleshooting, not to replace a watch solely because of the 2025 incident. The available evidence supports a genuine but uneven software problem and a targeted response—not permanent damage, a universal failure or proof that a particular newer watch is immune to future software bugs.
