Plaud’s original NotePin was not a smartphone replacement or a general-purpose AI assistant. Announced on August 28, 2024, it was a wearable recorder designed to capture conversations, transcribe them, and turn them into searchable notes, summaries, and action items. That narrower purpose made it easier to understand than ambitious AI pins such as Humane’s Ai Pin—but it also left users weighing a dedicated device, cloud processing, and a recurring subscription against the recording tools already built into phones and computers.
The original NotePin has since been superseded by the NotePin S, announced in January 2026. The product story remains the same: Plaud is selling an audio-to-notes workflow rather than a new kind of computer.
What Plaud announced in 2024
Plaud announced the original NotePin on August 28, 2024, at a launch price of $169. The wearable could be worn as a pin, necklace, or similar accessory and was designed primarily to record conversations.
After recording, the audio was sent through Plaud’s software for transcription and AI-assisted organization. The basic workflow was straightforward:

- Sync or upload the audio.
- Convert it into a transcript.
- Search the recording or generate summaries, notes, and action items.
Plaud positioned the NotePin as a companion to its earlier Plaud Note, a $159 recorder that attached to a phone. Plaud said the earlier product had sold 200,000 units; that was a company claim rather than an independently verified sales figure. TechCrunch’s launch coverage reported the original announcement and pricing.
Why it was called a “simpler AI pin”
The important word was not “pin.” It was “simpler.” The NotePin did not try to replace a phone, project an interface onto a user’s hand, or become an always-available general-purpose assistant. Its core job was audio capture followed by transcription and summarization.
That gave it a much narrower proposition than products such as Humane’s Ai Pin and other ambient-computing wearables. Instead of asking users to learn an entirely new way to interact with computing, Plaud asked them to wear a microphone when they wanted a searchable record of a conversation.

A meeting recorder has an obvious purpose; a device claiming to replace several phone functions has to justify a much broader set of compromises. But “simpler” did not mean independent or offline. The NotePin still depended on Plaud’s app, account, and AI services for much of its value.
What the NotePin was useful for
The strongest use cases were situations in which the user needed more than an audio file but did not want to type notes manually.
- Meetings: Capture discussion points and turn them into a first-pass summary.
- Interviews: Give journalists and researchers a searchable transcript to work from.
- Lectures: Record material for later review, where school policy and local law permit it.
- Dictation: Save ideas while walking, commuting, or working away from a desk.
- Personal memories: Keep searchable records of conversations and observations.
The benefit was not that AI made recording possible. Phones and traditional recorders already did that. The benefit was reducing the work between an audio file and usable information.

The subscription was part of the purchase
At launch, the $169 hardware included a free Starter plan with 300 transcription minutes per month. Plaud also announced a Pro plan costing $79 per year, with 1,200 minutes per month, speaker labels, and audio importing.
That meant the NotePin was not simply a one-time $169 recorder. Occasional users could remain on the free allowance, but people recording regular meetings would quickly need to consider the cost of additional transcription and AI features.
The distinction matters:
- Hardware: The physical wearable and its recording function.
- Starter: Limited monthly transcription at no subscription cost.
- Pro: More monthly minutes and additional features.
- Higher tiers: More capacity for people recording frequently or for long periods.
A buyer should also confirm what happens to stored audio, transcripts, and advanced functions if a plan is changed or an account is closed. Those policies can change and should be checked in Plaud’s current documentation before purchase.
Privacy and consent are central, not optional
A wearable recorder can be less conspicuous than placing a phone in the middle of a table. That does not make covert recording acceptable. Recording laws differ by jurisdiction, and workplace, school, research, newsroom, and client policies may be stricter than local law.
In practice, users should tell participants that recording is taking place and obtain consent where required. Extra caution is appropriate for interviews, medical information, legal discussions, confidential business meetings, and any conversation involving children or sensitive personal data. Plaud’s own interview guidance advises informing participants and obtaining consent.

Before using the device for confidential work, check where audio is processed, how long material is retained, whether original recordings and transcripts can be exported, and whether the organization permits the service. Do not assume that a small wearable is automatically private simply because it is not a phone.

AI transcripts still need checking
Transcription can become less reliable when people talk over one another, background noise is high, speakers are distant, voices are quiet, accents are unfamiliar, or discussions contain specialist terminology. Speaker labels can also be wrong.
AI summaries create a second risk: a fluent summary can still omit an important qualification or assign an action item to the wrong person. For important business, legal, medical, academic, or journalistic work, the recording should be reviewed against the transcript before it is quoted or used as the official record.
The device should therefore be treated as a first-pass assistant, not a guaranteed compliance-grade transcription system.

The case for a dedicated recorder depends on convenience. A phone is cheaper if the user already owns one, and phones, watches, computers, and meeting platforms increasingly offer recording or transcription. A separate wearable has to earn its place through a better workflow.

The dedicated wearable is most defensible for someone who records in-person conversations frequently, wants the microphone close by, and values searchable transcripts enough to pay for them. It is harder to justify for occasional recording or for someone whose phone already meets the need.

The NotePin S adds a physical instant-highlight button and supports several wearing styles, including a magnetic pin, clip, wristband, and necklace. The button is intended to make it easier to mark an important moment while recording; that is Plaud’s product rationale, not an independent test result.
Plaud’s current specifications list:
- 20 hours of continuous recording
- 40 days of standby time
- 64GB of storage
- Support for 112 transcription languages
These are manufacturer specifications rather than independently measured results. Current Plaud pages also position the NotePin S alongside Plaud Desktop for online meetings, including Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and other platforms. Plaud describes the desktop software as a way to record online meetings without a meeting bot, but that remains a vendor claim rather than an independent comparative test. On Plaud’s U.S. pages viewed on August 18, 2026, the plans showed Starter at 300 minutes per month, Pro at 1,200 minutes, Pro at $99.99 per year or $17.99 per month, and Unlimited at $29.99 per month. Plaud’s pages can show different bundles, billing cycles, regions, and promotions, so readers should verify the price at checkout. The current plan page is the relevant reference.
The current Unlimited plan is particularly relevant only to heavy users. A person recording occasionally may get enough value from Starter, while a regular professional should compare the annual cost of Pro with the cost of simply using an existing phone and transcription service.
Important practical warnings
- Consent: Do not record until participants have been informed and applicable consent requirements are satisfied.
- Overlapping speech: Check speaker labels and listen to the original audio before assigning decisions or quotations.
- Battery: Charge before long sessions; the 20-hour figure is a manufacturer estimate for the NotePin S.
- Usage limits: Check remaining transcription minutes before recording long meetings.
- Offline expectations: Confirm which functions work locally and which require the app or cloud processing.
- Medical devices: Plaud warns users with pacemakers to avoid wearing the NotePin S on the chest because of its magnetism. Follow the manufacturer’s warning and seek medical-device guidance.
- Online meetings: Confirm current operating-system compatibility, permissions, and platform support before relying on desktop capture.
Who should consider it?
The NotePin concept is most compelling for journalists, researchers, students, consultants, interviewers, and professionals who repeatedly need transcripts from in-person conversations. It is also more attractive to people who want hands-free operation and dislike leaving a phone visibly recording on a table.

It is a poor fit for users who record only occasionally, want fully offline operation, cannot obtain consent reliably, already have satisfactory phone transcription, or need guaranteed legal, medical, or compliance-grade records. It is also the wrong product category for anyone expecting a general-purpose AI assistant or smartphone replacement.
Verdict
Plaud’s “simpler AI pin” strategy made sense because it focused on a real, understandable job: turning conversations into searchable information. The original NotePin was less ambitious than Humane’s Ai Pin and similar products, but that was its point.
Its strongest argument was convenience for frequent recording. Its biggest weaknesses were the subscription, cloud and account dependence, privacy obligations, imperfect AI output, and the fact that phones and meeting software increasingly offer similar capabilities. The current NotePin S improves the wearable package and extends it toward online meetings, but it remains a specialized recorder—not a new kind of computer.
