Polar Loop is a screen-free, button-free fitness band that tracks heart rate, sleep, activity and workouts, with its data viewed in Polar Flow. Its one-time purchase makes it a much cheaper long-term option than WHOOP for buyers who mainly want quiet background tracking. But it is not a WHOOP equivalent—or a sports watch: it has no built-in GPS or live workout display, and independent reviews have found its app and workout detection less polished.

Polar launched Loop on September 3, 2025. It is best understood as a low-interaction companion for people who want health and activity trends without another screen or recurring membership, not as a standalone tool for pacing a run or following a training plan.

What Polar Loop is—and what the screenless design costs

Polar Loop is a wrist-worn tracker with no display and no buttons. It records data in the background and relies on the Polar Flow app for setup, workout controls and analysis. Polar’s launch announcement described it as a screen-free, subscription-free wearable; Polar currently presents its core features without a recurring fee.

Removing the screen is the point, not just a cost-cutting choice. There are no notifications or metrics to check on your wrist, and Loop can sit alongside a traditional watch. That may suit sleep tracking and distraction-free days. The trade-off is equally direct: you cannot glance at live heart rate, pace, distance, elapsed time or training zones. You also cannot confirm a workout has started without opening the app or checking later.

#1 Best Overall

  • [No Subscription Needed] No monthly fees. No locked features. Get full access to the Polar Flow app for detailed sleep and heart rate insights from day one.

  • [Long Battery Life, Trusted Technology] Up to 8 days battery and seamless Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity. Built with Polar’s trusted Precision Prime sensor technology for continuous heart rate monitoring—even during sleep.

For a watch-focused reader, that distinction matters. Loop can complement a GPS watch, but it cannot replace one for runners, cyclists or hikers who need on-device navigation or real-time feedback.

Price: a one-time purchase versus an annual membership

Polar’s U.S. product page showed a price of $169.99 when checked on August 16, 2026, while its global page showed $199.99. Those are regional price signals, not a universal price; local pricing and promotions can change. Check the relevant Polar U.S. page or global page before buying.

WHOOP’s U.S. membership page listed One at $199 per year, Peak at $239 per year and Life at $359 per year. On simple arithmetic, five years of those plans would cost $995, $1,195 and $1,795 respectively, before any price changes. Polar Loop’s purchase price would remain $169.99 or $199.99 over that same period, excluding taxes, replacement bands and any replacement device. These are illustrations, not forecasts.

The comparison favors Polar on ownership cost, but it is not a like-for-like service comparison. WHOOP memberships include access to its software and coaching features as well as the wearable; a recurring fee helps fund the platform and its ongoing services. See the current WHOOP membership details before comparing plans, since features depend on tier.

Category Polar Loop WHOOP 5.0 / MG
Display and controls No screen or buttons No screen or buttons on the wearable
Payment model One-time hardware purchase; Polar Flow’s advertised core features do not require a membership Membership required for the full experience
U.S. price observed, Aug. 16, 2026 $169.99 on Polar U.S.; $199.99 on Polar global page One $199/year; Peak $239/year; Life $359/year
Advertised battery Up to about eight days 14+ days for WHOOP 5.0 and MG
GPS No built-in GPS; phone GPS can provide route data Designed around membership and app tracking, not a conventional GPS-watch display experience
Emphasis Heart rate, activity, sleep, workouts and Polar Flow Sleep, Strain, Recovery, coaching and tier-dependent broader health features
Higher-tier health functions No skin-temperature tracking; comparatively limited feature set WHOOP MG offers ECG-related and other higher-tier health functions; see WHOOP’s feature and medical-use qualifications

Loop’s strongest case against WHOOP is therefore the ownership model and a simpler, quieter role—not matching WHOOP’s coaching depth or software polish.

What it tracks, and what is missing

Polar lists continuous heart-rate tracking, sleep, daily activity and movement, activity goals, recovery-oriented insights and workout tracking among Loop’s features. The band uses Polar’s Precision Prime optical heart-rate platform and an accelerometer. Those sensor names describe hardware, not a guarantee that every reading will be accurate in every activity; fit, movement, exercise type and software processing all affect results.

Polar says Loop can store up to four weeks of data and claims up to about eight days of battery life. Both are manufacturer figures, not promises for every wearer. Tracking settings, syncing habits, firmware, temperature and battery age can affect real-world endurance. Its offline storage can help when you are away from your phone, but Polar’s stated capacity should not be read as a guarantee that every metric will be immediately available without syncing.

Loop has no built-in GPS. Polar Flow can use the phone’s GPS for location and route data, so you need your phone with you and location access enabled for that use. It also does not support skin-temperature tracking, a notable omission for people seeking temperature-based sleep or cycle-related insights. See Polar’s feature details for the current specifications.

How workout recording works

There are two ways to record exercise:

  1. Automatic detection: Loop attempts to identify workouts from its sensor data without you starting a session.
  2. Manual start: You start an activity in Polar Flow and use Loop as the heart-rate source.

Automatic detection is convenient for general activity, but it is not the same as pressing Start on a sports watch and seeing a live timer. Independent reviews have criticized workout detection and aspects of the app experience, so do not assume every short, irregular or strength-based session will be captured exactly as you expect. For a session where timing and classification matter, manually starting it in Flow is the more deliberate option—but you still do not get on-wrist workout controls or metrics.

Polar Loop Smart Fitness Band Zonder Shear
  • [Smart Tracking, No Distractions] Heart rate measurement, activity, sleep and recovery tracking 24/7 and automatic training detection in a wristband without display.
  • [LIGHTWEIGHT AND DISCREE] 1 oz lightweight, small, soft and no display: the Polar Loop stands for comfort and minimalism. Wear it day and night - and forget it's there.
  • [No subscription required] No cost per month. No locked areas. Full access to the Polar Flow app from day 1 for sleep, recovery, exercise data.
  • [Scientifically based features for sleep and recovery] Better recovery with sleep tracking, Nightly Recharge and SleepWise
  • [Long battery life, reliable technology] Up to 8 days of battery life as well as Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity. Proven Precision Prime technology from Polar for precise heart rate measurements, even when training and sleeping.

For outdoor routes, phone GPS adds another dependency: carry your phone, keep location permissions enabled and allow the app to use the data. If you want reliable phone-free pace, distance or navigation, choose a GPS sports watch instead.

Polar Flow is central to the experience

Because Loop has no display or controls, Polar Flow is not an optional extra. It is where you set up the device, start manual sessions and make sense of the recorded data. The product is only as useful as that app-mediated experience is for you.

Independent reviews have generally liked Loop’s comfort and battery life while finding Flow less polished or intuitive than WHOOP’s software, with workout detection another weak spot. That is a more important caveat than it would be for a tracker that shows useful information directly on the wrist. Polar has continued to update Flow—the support page listed iOS app version 7.36.1 dated June 17, 2026—but that update listing alone does not establish a particular Loop-specific improvement. Consult Polar’s Loop support page for current setup and compatibility information.

Who should buy Polar Loop?

  • You already wear a GPS watch or use your phone for workouts. Loop can add background sleep, activity and heart-rate tracking without duplicating a watch display.
  • You want health and activity trends without a recurring fee. Its up-front price is attractive if you expect to use it for several years and do not need subscription-based coaching.
  • You prefer a quiet companion to a smartwatch. No screen means no wrist notifications or live metrics, which can be a benefit if you want less interaction.
  • You want detailed coaching and interpretation. WHOOP is the stronger fit if you value its Recovery, Strain, stress and tier-dependent Healthspan tools enough to pay for membership. Its advantage is substantially the software layer, not simply the band.
  • You train by pace, heart-rate zone or route. Choose a GPS sports watch if live metrics, maps, structured workouts or phone-free GPS are part of your routine.
  • You mainly want sleep tracking in another form factor. A smart ring or other health wearable may fit better, but compare its temperature features, app and membership terms rather than assuming all screen-free devices offer the same tracking.

Verdict

Polar Loop is a credible subscription-free screenless tracker for people who want low-interaction background data and can accept app dependence. It is particularly compelling for someone who already owns a sports watch and does not want to pay annually for another wearable platform. Its lack of GPS and live feedback, plus a less polished app and less capable coaching experience than WHOOP, make it a poor substitute for serious workout guidance. Buy it for simplicity and long-term cost control—not because it does everything WHOOP does for less.
