Yes—Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is a real product, launched in the United States on September 17, 2025, with a starting price of $379. Ray-Ban and Meta rate it for up to eight hours of moderate use, compared with about four hours for the original Ray-Ban Meta. But “2× battery” applies to the headline mixed-use estimate—not every activity. Continuous audio, calls, and camera-heavy use improve by a smaller amount.
Gen 2 is a sensible upgrade for hands-free photos, higher-resolution video, open-ear audio, and voice AI. It is not a phone replacement or augmented-reality headset: there is no in-lens display.
What “2× battery” really means
The most accurate description is up to twice the previous model’s moderate-use battery rating. Ray-Ban’s published figures show how the improvement changes by workload:

These are manufacturer figures, not an independent test. Camera recording, frequent Meta AI requests, calls, wireless conditions, temperature, and software features can reduce runtime. Eight hours should therefore be treated as a best-case mixed-use rating rather than a guarantee that the glasses will record video or stream music continuously for a full day.

The glasses include a charging case. A Best Buy listing advertises up to 48 additional hours from the case, but that is a retailer claim and may depend on the precise configuration. The case is useful for extending a day’s use, but it does not make Gen 2 a permanently phone-free or maintenance-free device.

What else changed in Gen 2?
3K video and a higher-resolution camera
The principal hardware upgrade besides the battery is video capture. Gen 2 records 3K Ultra HD video. Ray-Ban’s comparison information lists still images at 2203 × 2938 pixels, or about 6.5 megapixels, versus 1360 × 1880 pixels, or about 2.6 megapixels, for the previous model.

New and expanded AI features
Meta announced Conversation Focus, intended to make the voice of the person being addressed easier to hear in noisy surroundings. Live translation also expanded to German and Portuguese at launch, with more language support planned.
Availability can vary by country, language, Meta account, phone, app version, firmware, and rollout status. An announced feature should not automatically be assumed to be available to every owner in every market.

Ray-Ban frame and lens choices
Gen 2 is available in familiar Ray-Ban families including Wayfarer, Headliner, and Skyler, with different colors and lens types. Prescription lenses are supported, but the exact prescription range and available lens options depend on the selected frame and configuration.
What does the $379 price include?
$379 is the US starting price for a basic configuration. A current Ray-Ban Gen 2 Headliner listing shows that price and identifies the Meta account and Meta AI app as requirements. The base purchase is a pair of Gen 2 glasses with standard lenses and a charging case.
The entry price may not include:
- Prescription lenses
- Transitions or other photochromic lenses
- Polarized lenses
- Specialty coatings or upgraded optical options
- Sales tax
For prescription wearers, compare the final configured price rather than the frame’s headline price. Progressive, high-prescription, polarized, and photochromic options may have different availability or costs. Buying the intended lens configuration initially may also be simpler than replacing the lenses later.

The original model became more compelling when its price fell to about $299 at Gen 2’s launch, according to reporting from The Associated Press. Actual discounts and stock can change, so the older model is worth considering only when the saving is substantial enough to outweigh its shorter battery life and lower-resolution camera.

Ray-Ban lists Android 10 or later and iOS 14.4 or later as baseline requirements, with location services required on Android. Phone compatibility and app requirements can change, so verify them before purchase.
AI queries, synchronization, calls, translation, and some camera features may depend on the phone, account, network, region, language, app version, and firmware. The glasses can perform some local functions, but they should not be treated as an independent computer that replaces a smartphone.
There is no display
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 has cameras, open-ear speakers, microphones, and voice AI, but no in-lens display. Responses are spoken aloud rather than shown in front of your eyes.

Meta’s separate Ray-Ban Display product is a different, higher-priced category; the AP reported a $799 price for that product.

Possibly, depending on what “all day” means. Occasional photos, short videos, intermittent AI questions, moderate audio, brief calls, and standby use fit the scenario behind the eight-hour rating.
A case recharge becomes more likely with continuous music or podcasts, frequent AI interactions, repeated calls, extended recording, live streaming, poor wireless conditions, or extreme temperatures. Ray-Ban warns that very hot or cold conditions can permanently reduce battery life.

If the glasses last only a few hours, first compare the workload with the published figures. Continuous audio or calls are not the same test as moderate mixed use. Also check that both the glasses and case were fully charged, update the app and firmware, and consider temperature and battery health before assuming the unit is defective.

Prescription lenses
Prescription configurations are available, but the exact frame, lens type, prescription range, and price matter. Use an authorized optical provider and confirm compatibility for the specific model. Ray-Ban and Meta have also expanded their prescription guidance, but “prescription-ready” does not mean every prescription works with every frame.
Privacy and recording etiquette
The glasses have an external capture LED intended to indicate when the camera is recording. That is a useful signal, but it is not a guarantee that everyone nearby will notice or understand it.
- Ask permission before recording people in sensitive situations.
- Follow venue rules where cameras are prohibited.
- Explain the recording indicator to people nearby.
- Do not assume ordinary-looking glasses are acceptable everywhere.
Privacy policies, account controls, and data-handling practices are separate from the hardware specification. Review Meta’s current documentation before using camera and AI features around other people.
Weather, comfort, and durability
The larger battery does not establish a universal durability rating for every Gen 2 frame and lens configuration. Check the current documentation for the exact model before exposing it to rain, sweat, humidity, or water. Do not use the glasses for swimming, and do not assume liquid damage is covered by the warranty. Temperature can also affect battery performance and longevity.
Which alternative makes more sense?
- Oakley Meta HSTN: Consider this if you prefer sportier Oakley styling or a performance-oriented design. It remains a camera-and-AI glasses platform rather than a display headset.
- Meta Ray-Ban Display: Choose this category if a visual display is the main requirement. It costs considerably more; AP reported a $799 price.
- Amazon Echo Frames: Consider these for audio-first Alexa use when a camera and first-person video are not priorities. They are a different ecosystem and should not be compared as a direct camera-glasses substitute.
Verdict: is Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 worth $379?
For a new buyer, Gen 2 is worth considering at $379 if longer battery life, better camera capture, open-ear audio, and voice AI are all useful. The upgrade is meaningful, but the headline is easy to overread: it is up to twice the mixed-use rating, not twice the runtime for every task.
Choose the original Ray-Ban Meta if you find it substantially cheaper and mainly want occasional photos, calls, and audio. Choose neither model if you need a visual display, guaranteed full-day continuous recording, or truly phone-independent operation.
The most important buying check is the configured total. Once prescription or premium lenses are added, the actual price may be far above $379.
