Generation note: The hands-on reviewed here was published on November 29, 2024, and covers the earlier Ray-Ban Meta Headliner—not the current Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. Its $329 price, roughly four-hour battery expectation, video limits and Meta View app references are historical, not current Gen 2 specifications.
The Headliner is a rounded Ray-Ban frame fitted with a camera, open-ear speakers, microphones and phone-connected smart features. The original review found it comfortable and discreet, with a useful camera for casual first-person captures and audio that worked best in quiet surroundings. Its trade-offs were limited camera control, short battery life, sound leakage and dependence on Meta’s services. It is a handy smartphone companion, not a professional camera or display-based AR headset.
The verdict
The Ray-Ban Meta Headliner makes sense if you want to capture quick, hands-free photos and short videos while keeping your phone in your pocket, or add calls and open-ear audio to ordinary-looking sunglasses. It is a poor fit if you expect top-tier camera quality, long continuous recording, private listening, universal app support or visual augmented-reality features.

What “Headliner” means—and what it doesn’t
Headliner is a frame shape: a softer, more rounded alternative to the squarer Wayfarer. The smart functions belong to the Ray-Ban Meta platform rather than to a separate Headliner software system. The generations matter:
- Ray-Ban Stories: the earlier 2021 smart-glasses line.
- Ray-Ban Meta: the 2023 generation covered by the 2024 Headliner hands-on.
- Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2: the newer product generation listed by Ray-Ban in 2026.
Retailers may use “Gen 1” inconsistently, sometimes meaning the first Ray-Ban Meta generation and sometimes confusing it with Stories. Check the model and specifications rather than relying on a seller’s generation label.
These glasses have no display in front of the eyes. They do not show maps, captions or floating AR graphics, and they are not VR eyewear. Instead, think of them as sunglasses with a wearable camera, open-ear audio, microphones, touch controls and voice-assistant access through a connected phone. Some AI features can respond by voice or interpret camera input where supported, but the experience is audio-first.

Design, fit and everyday wear
The original reviewer found the Headliner visually close to conventional Ray-Ban sunglasses, though the temples are thicker to house the electronics. The reviewed configuration weighed about 50 grams and measured approximately 132 mm across the hinges, with a 43 mm lens height and 150 mm temples. Those are figures for the reviewed earlier model, not a guarantee for every size or later configuration.
Fit is central to whether the idea works. A camera you can reach without taking out your phone is useful only if the frame stays comfortable for hours. Headliner has a rounder profile than Wayfarer, and sizes, bridge fits and lens choices vary. Ray-Ban currently lists a Gen 2 high-bridge configuration in 50-23 sizing and a separate 51-23 low-bridge fit. If standard frames slide, pinch or sit too low, try the low-bridge option rather than assuming you will adapt.

Prescription options are available on some configurations, but verify the exact prescription range and ordering channel with Ray-Ban or an authorized optical provider before buying. Check lens type, bridge fit, return policy and replacement or warranty terms. A charging case is part of the ownership experience, so account for carrying and charging another device. The glasses are not waterproof; check the applicable manufacturer guidance and do not treat them as suitable for swimming or exposure beyond their stated water resistance.
Camera: spontaneous capture, not a phone replacement
On the earlier model, the camera is 12 megapixels, with stills at 3,024 × 4,032 pixels and portrait-oriented video at 1,440 × 1,920 pixels at 30 frames per second. The original review judged it useful for casual snapshots, not professional recording. Its main advantage is perspective and speed: press a button on the temple or use a voice command to capture what you are seeing without first raising a phone.

That convenience comes with less control. The reviewed generation’s video is portrait-oriented, and the controls are intentionally simple: a physical capture button, voice capture commands and a touch surface for volume. You cannot compose as precisely as you can while looking at a phone screen. The hands-on also notes recording-length limits, which vary by capture mode; a short clip is not the same as a long continuous recording or a livestream. Confirm the current model’s limits in its software and product documentation before relying on it for an event.
In bright daylight, quick captures are the most natural use. Dim conditions, fast movement and difficult contrast expose the limits: expect more noise, motion blur or lost detail than with a good modern phone, and accept that framing may not be exactly what you intended. The first-person angle can be more valuable than technical image quality for a quick walk, a child’s moment or a hands-busy activity. It is not a reason to leave a phone or dedicated camera behind when image quality and control matter.
The earlier workflow brought captures into Meta’s companion app for review, transfer and sharing. The app name and experience have changed: current models use the Meta AI app, so do not assume a 2024 reference to Meta View describes today’s setup. Gen 2 has a different video specification: Ray-Ban lists capture up to 2,203 × 2,938 at 30 fps, marketed as 3K Ultra HD. That is a Gen 2 figure, not the earlier review’s video resolution.

Audio, calls and microphones
The earlier Headliner has five microphones and open-ear speakers positioned above the ears. The reviewer found the sound balanced and usable in quiet settings, but weaker in noisy surroundings. At higher volume, audio can leak to people nearby. Because the microphones sit on the frame close to the wearer’s face, breathing and environmental noise can also enter recordings.

Open-ear audio is a useful compromise for a walk, a quiet office or a quick call when you want to hear the world around you. It does not provide the isolation or bass of sealed earbuds. Traffic, machinery, busy public transit and aircraft cabins can overwhelm it, and intelligibility varies with ambient noise. Do not depend on it for clear calls in a loud environment, and never let a call or voice assistant distract you from driving or other safety-critical tasks.
Ray-Ban’s Gen 2 listing also specifies two custom open-ear speakers and a five-microphone array. Open audio may help you remain aware of ambient sound compared with in-ear listening, but it is not a safety guarantee. It also means nearby people may hear what you are playing. Keep volume considerate, and choose earbuds or another option when privacy or noise isolation matters.
Phone, app and Meta dependence
The glasses are not a fully independent phone. Pairing with a compatible smartphone is required, and many smart, sharing and AI functions depend on Meta’s software, an account, an internet connection and supported services. Ray-Ban’s current U.S. Gen 2 listing specifies iOS 14.4 or later or Android 10 or later, along with a Meta account, the Meta AI app, a compatible phone and wireless internet access. Requirements and feature availability can change, so check the product page for your country and your phone before purchasing.
The 2024 review described service pathways available at that time: standard Android calling, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger for supported calling or messaging, Facebook and Instagram sharing, and Spotify and Amazon Music. It also noted limited voice-control language availability. Treat these as historical, time-specific findings—not a complete statement of 2026 support. Service integrations, app versions, languages and country availability can change with software and firmware updates. Compatibility with a phone does not guarantee that every AI feature or service works in every region.

This ecosystem dependence is a real part of the purchase decision. If you do not want a Meta account or app, or your preferred messaging and music services are not supported where you live, the central conveniences may be unavailable or diminished. Check regional feature support before ordering, particularly outside the United States. AI features also depend on network access and can vary by language, location and software; do not assume the glasses can answer every question about a scene.
Battery and charging: keep the generations separate
The original hands-on expected roughly four hours of use and reported specific, informal observations: after 26 one-minute videos—about 30 minutes of intermittent recording—the reviewer saw about half the battery remaining; one hour of Spotify playback left 63% according to the app. These are individual observations, not controlled or guaranteed battery benchmarks.
For Gen 2, Ray-Ban claims up to eight hours on a charge with moderate use and up to five hours with continuous audio streaming and voice assistance. The company also describes additional charge from the case: its listing refers to up to 48 hours of extra power in one place and up to 40 hours of charge time from a fully charged case in a product-page footnote. Those are manufacturer claims whose wording and conditions matter; they should not be collapsed into a promise of a fixed number of real-world hours.
Camera use, calls, streaming, AI activity, temperature, connectivity and settings all affect runtime. Heavy use can drain a charge faster than occasional captures or standby. The case both protects and recharges the frames, but it is another item to carry. Ray-Ban says its current collection ships without a charging cable, so check the exact listing. If the battery runs down, the frames may still function as sunglasses, but smart features will not.
Privacy and recording etiquette
A camera worn on someone’s face can record people who do not realize they are in frame. The glasses have a front-facing white LED intended to signal recording; the original reviewer described it as discreet. An indicator is not a guarantee that every bystander will notice, and it does not make recording lawful or appropriate.

Recording and consent rules differ by jurisdiction. Follow local law, workplace or venue policies, and other applicable restrictions. Do not record where photography is prohibited or covertly record private conversations. Ask before recording people in close, private or sensitive situations; stop capture when someone objects. Avoid using the camera in bathrooms, medical settings, schools, restricted workplaces and private meetings. Livestreaming and AI features that analyze camera input raise additional privacy concerns, so use them only where people reasonably expect recording and the relevant rules allow it.
Consider the social context even where a recording might technically be legal. If people cannot tell whether you are filming, explain what you are doing or put the glasses away. The convenience of hands-free capture does not override other people’s reasonable expectations.

Gen 2’s 32 GB storage is listed by Ray-Ban as enough for 500+ photos or 100+ 30-second videos; actual capacity depends on content and available space. The older review did not specify storage. This comparison is not a controlled test: the older column summarizes the hands-on and the newer column summarizes manufacturer specifications. For current availability, lens options and price, use the relevant Ray-Ban Gen 2 listing. A listed Transitions configuration is around $459, but that does not make adaptive lenses the right choice for everyone.
What it can replace—and what it cannot
- Compared with ordinary sunglasses: Headliner adds hands-free photos and video, calls, music and voice features. In exchange, it costs more, weighs and charges more, raises recording concerns and includes electronics that may fail or become obsolete.
- Compared with earbuds: It avoids putting speakers in your ears and adds a camera, but offers less isolation and bass, more sound leakage and a fit tied to wearing sunglasses. Ordinary sunglasses plus earbuds may be a better, more flexible choice if you care more about audio.
- Compared with a smartphone: It is faster for spontaneous first-person moments and can leave the phone in your pocket. It gives you less control over framing and, on the reviewed generation, lower-resolution portrait video than many phones. It still depends on the phone and app for much of its smart functionality.
For better image quality or deliberate composition, use a phone or camera. For audio in loud places or private listening, choose suitable earbuds. If you want display-based navigation or captions, these are not the glasses to buy.
Who should buy the Headliner?
Consider it if you frequently want short hands-free captures, value the rounded Ray-Ban look, use compatible Meta services and accept an audio-first device with a camera. The current Gen 2 is the more sensible place to start if you are buying new and want the newer battery and video specifications—provided the higher price and Meta dependence suit you.
Consider older stock only at a meaningful discount if your needs are basic capture, calls and audio, and you understand that the 2024 review’s battery and video details describe the earlier generation. Verify the exact model and seller’s return policy; an ambiguous “Gen 1” label is not enough.
Skip it if you need professional-quality video, long recording sessions, private or high-fidelity audio, visual AR, independence from Meta’s account and app, or a camera you can wear without changing the social dynamic. A pair of ordinary sunglasses plus earbuds—or simply your phone—may be the more practical purchase.
