The small red dot near the top of an Apple Watch face means there is at least one unread notification in Notification Centre. It is not a low-battery or recording warning. Open Notification Centre to read or clear the alert—or hide the dot while keeping notifications on.
What the red dot means
Apple identifies the red dot as the notification indicator: it appears when a notification is waiting to be read. The alert might come from a message, call, email, calendar, health alert, or another enabled app. Some watch-only apps can also send notifications.
The dot marks unread notifications, not necessarily a new or urgent alert, and it does not mean the watch made a sound. Its position can vary with the watch face and other on-screen indicators.

How to remove the red dot
- Wake the watch and show the watch face.
- Touch and hold the top edge until Notification Centre appears, then swipe down to view the alerts. On some watchOS versions, swiping down from the top of the face opens it directly.
- Tap a notification to read it. To dismiss one, swipe left on it and tap the delete button.
To clear everything at once, open Notification Centre, scroll to the top, and tap Clear All. This is the quickest way to remove the dot without opening each alert. If you want to keep the alerts for later, hide the indicator instead of clearing them. Apple’s steps for Notification Centre cover reading, deleting, and clearing alerts.
Hide the dot without turning off notifications
On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app and go to My Watch → Notifications → Notifications Indicator. Turn off Notifications Indicator.

Some watchOS versions also offer the setting on the watch under Settings → Notifications → Notifications Indicator. Menu availability can vary, so use the iPhone’s Watch app if you do not see it on the watch.

This setting hides the red dot; it does not stop notifications from arriving. The trade-off is that you may not notice unread alerts as readily.

Reduce notifications from particular apps
If one app is creating too many alerts, change its notification behavior rather than disabling everything. In Notification Centre, swipe left on one of its notifications, tap More, and choose an available option, such as muting it temporarily or turning it off.
For app-by-app controls on iPhone, open Watch → My Watch → Notifications, select the app, and choose an available option. Depending on the app, you may see:

- Allow Notifications: deliver the app’s alerts to the watch.
- Send to Notification Centre: keep alerts for later review without actively alerting you.
- Notifications Off: stop that app’s notifications on the watch.
- Mirror my iPhone: use the iPhone’s notification behavior, where available.
Hiding the indicator preserves notifications; sending alerts to Notification Centre reduces interruptions; turning alerts off prevents that app from contributing notifications. Consider whether you still need its reminders or safety-related alerts before disabling them.

Red dot or another Apple Watch icon?
Several symbols can appear near the top of the face. Apple lists these as separate status icons, so check the shape and color rather than assuming every red or orange mark means the same thing. See Apple’s status-icon guide for the full list.

If the red dot remains but Notification Centre looks empty
A dot that seems to persist does not by itself prove a hardware problem. Try these checks:
- Open Notification Centre again and scroll all the way to the top. If Clear All is available, tap it.
- Check Notification Centre on the paired iPhone. Reading or dismissing an alert on one device can affect its unread state on the other.
- Check that the watch is connected to the iPhone. On current watchOS, press the side button to open Control Centre and review the connection status; watchOS 9 or earlier used a different Control Centre gesture. See Apple’s watchOS 26 Control Centre guide.
- Restart the Apple Watch and paired iPhone, then check for available watchOS and iOS updates.
- If the indicator remains after those steps, contact Apple Support. Apple documents what the dot means but does not identify one universal cause for every case where it appears to remain after the list looks empty.
When the watch and iPhone are disconnected, notification delivery may differ. Apple also notes that third-party notifications require the paired iPhone to be connected to a network. Connection issues can therefore affect what appears on the watch.
