Verdict: The Michael Kors Access Dylan was a good-looking, competent Android Wear smartwatch for late 2016, but it is not a sensible modern smartwatch. Its oversized designer styling, interchangeable strap and notification features remain appealing; its TFT “flat-tire” display, one-day battery, unreliable magnetic charger, limited fitness hardware and aging software do not. In 2026, buy one only as a cheap, working vintage smartwatch or fashion watch—and only after testing charging and phone pairing.
What is the Michael Kors Access Dylan?
The Access Dylan was Michael Kors’s first-generation smartwatch, launched for the fall 2016 fashion and technology market. It ran Google’s then-current Android Wear platform and was positioned as the larger, sportier and more traditionally masculine companion to the Michael Kors Access Bradshaw.
The black-tone silicone version discussed here is model MKT5011. It combines a conventional oversized watch design with smartphone notifications, Google voice features, basic activity tracking, interchangeable straps and Android Wear apps. Michael Kors advertised compatibility with Android phones and iPhones, although supported features varied by platform and software version.

This is an early Android Wear device, not an older version of a modern Wear OS watch. Its 2016 strengths still explain its appeal, but its battery, charger, software and phone compatibility are now the central concerns.

Design: a smartwatch that looks like a watch
The Dylan’s best feature is its appearance. The large 46mm case, traditional crown at 3 o’clock and assertive round profile make it look more like a conventional designer watch than a small computer strapped to the wrist. Launch coverage described black, gold-and-black and silver-and-blue styling variations, giving the range a more fashion-led identity than many early Android Wear rivals.
That visual advantage comes with substantial physical bulk. At approximately 14mm thick, with large 28mm lugs, the Dylan is neither discreet nor especially suitable for small wrists. It is a statement watch. Buyers who like oversized fashion watches will understand the appeal; everyone else should check the dimensions carefully before buying.

The silicone strap was comfortable enough in the original review and is replaceable, which helps the Dylan function as a conventional watch-style accessory. It does not, however, feel equivalent to a premium leather strap or a modern sport band. The case looks premium and fashion-oriented, but “premium-looking” is more accurate than calling the entire device luxury-grade: the display technology and charging system reveal its age.
Display: readable enough, visibly compromised
The Dylan uses a 1.4-inch circular TFT display with a resolution of 320 × 290 pixels. The unusual resolution reflects the screen’s most obvious compromise: the lower portion is missing to accommodate display hardware, creating the Android Wear “flat-tire” cutout.
The black version disguises that interruption better than some lighter finishes, but it remains visible. In 2016, the screen was serviceable for notifications, watch faces and basic interaction. By current standards, it is less impressive than an AMOLED panel: contrast, sharpness and power efficiency are all behind later smartwatch displays.
Watch faces could be changed on the watch or through the Android Wear companion app, and animated Michael Kors designs helped reinforce the fashion positioning. Notifications were usable, but the narrow usable area and early Android Wear interface made extended interaction unpleasant. This is a watch for glancing, dismissing and performing short actions—not for typing or managing conversations.
Performance and Android Wear features
The Snapdragon Wear 2100 was a meaningful improvement over the Snapdragon 400 used in several earlier Android Wear watches. With 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage, the Dylan was broadly comparable to the Michael Kors Bradshaw and adequate for its era.
In everyday use, it could:
- display, dismiss and act on smartphone notifications;
- show email alerts and support limited replies or actions where the app allowed them;
- access contacts and Google voice features;
- control music playback, including Spotify controls;
- store notes with Google Keep;
- track movement through Google Fit;
- install compatible Android Wear apps; and
- switch watch faces from the watch or companion app.
The original review used apps including Kroger, Spotify, Google Keep and Google Fit. App behavior depended on the app and paired phone. Some social-media notifications were informative rather than genuinely interactive, and notification delivery could lag behind the phone.

The practical performance verdict is therefore straightforward: the Dylan was adequate for notifications and watch-face use, but never a strong standalone communication device. Small-screen typing was impractical, and performance could vary with Bluetooth behavior, phone software and the companion app.
Software: early Android Wear, not modern Wear OS
The review unit ran Android Wear rather than Android Wear 2.0, with reported build MWE26B, an Android 6.0.1 software base and the July 5, 2016 security patch. Android Wear 2.0 was expected at the time but had been delayed until 2017.

Do not assume that every used unit received every later Android Wear update, or that a watch running an old build will automatically regain modern app support.
This distinction matters in 2026. “Android Wear” and modern “Wear OS” are not interchangeable labels. Later Michael Kors watches use newer hardware and software generations, with features the Dylan was never designed to provide.
Battery life: a one-day watch
The original reviewer typically finished a day with approximately 40% battery remaining, sometimes more. That was acceptable for a 2016 smartwatch but not exceptional. Travel was much harder on endurance: after a flight, the reviewer reported arriving with approximately 6% remaining even with power-saving mode in use.
These are reviewer observations, not controlled laboratory measurements. The defensible conclusion is that the Dylan was a one-day watch, not a dependable two-day device. Heavy notifications, changing radio connections and travel can reduce runtime further.
In 2026, the battery question is more serious. A nine-year-old unit may have substantially reduced capacity, may shut down unexpectedly or may fail to hold a charge at all. A listing that says “works” is not enough; ask how long the battery lasts during actual use.
The magnetic charger is the biggest used-buying risk
The original review’s most serious hardware complaint concerned the magnetic charging system. The charger could slip out of position, leaving the watch apparently connected overnight but dead in the morning. A cradle or dock would have been more reliable.
Michael Kors’s product page also contains individual customer reports describing charging problems, including a charger LED flickering without producing a usable charge. That is anecdotal evidence, not a measured defect rate, but it reinforces the importance of testing the charger before buying.

Do not purchase a Dylan without confirming that:
- the original or a known-compatible charger is included;
- the watch shows a charging indicator;
- the battery percentage actually increases;
- the magnetic connection remains stable when the watch is left undisturbed; and
- the watch can hold the resulting charge.
Clean and dry the charging contacts, try a known-good USB power source and reposition the watch carefully if charging fails. If the battery icon never appears or the percentage does not rise, treat the unit as defective rather than assuming it simply needs more time.
Android and iPhone compatibility
Michael Kors listed the Dylan as compatible with both Android and iPhone. Android was the safer platform for the original Android Wear experience, while iPhone support was more limited. The launch material explicitly warned that supported features could vary between Android and iOS.
That compatibility statement should not be read as equivalent to Apple Watch-style integration. Pairing depends on the current phone, operating system and companion app—not just the watch’s original specification sheet.
If you use an iPhone or a recent Android phone, test the actual watch with that phone before committing. A seller’s statement that “it works with iPhone” is insufficient unless you can verify pairing, notifications and the features you care about. Notification permissions, Bluetooth stability, phone battery optimization and outdated software can all affect the result.
Fitness, health tracking and water resistance
The Dylan offered basic movement tracking through its accelerometer, gyroscope and Google Fit. The original review discussed movement, running and cycling, but found the experience inferior to dedicated fitness products such as Fitbit.

The verified Dylan specifications do not establish heart-rate monitoring, blood-oxygen measurement, sleep staging, built-in GPS, contactless payments or swim tracking. Later Michael Kors models added many of these capabilities, which makes the distinction particularly important.
The official rating is 1 ATM water resistance. That is a limited rating, not a swimming or showering guarantee. Avoid swimming, showering, immersion and deliberate water exposure. On a used watch, the condition of seals is also unknown.

Michael Kors’s 2016 launch announcement said Access watches would start at $395 in the United States. Contemporary Google Store coverage reported a $350 price for the Dylan and Bradshaw. The discrepancy likely reflects differences in model, configuration, retailer or launch pricing, so neither figure should be treated as the single definitive price for every Dylan.
That pricing made sense in its original market. The Dylan offered a more fashionable design than many competitors while using broadly familiar Android Wear hardware. It was attractive to buyers who wanted notifications without wearing a visibly technical gadget.

The 2026 value calculation is different. The watch is now legacy hardware with an aging battery, a potentially unreliable charger, limited water resistance, uncertain phone compatibility and outdated app support. Its price should be heavily discounted to reflect the possibility that the battery or charger may be uneconomical to replace.
Used Michael Kors Access Dylan buying checklist
- Confirm the model. Check the case, finish and model identifier so you are not buying a different Michael Kors Access watch.
- Request a power-on video. The screen should boot normally and respond to touch.
- Inspect the display. Look for burn-in, dead pixels, scratches and damage around the flat-tire cutout.
- Confirm the charger is included. A watch sold without a working charger is a high-risk purchase.
- Test actual charging. Leave it connected long enough to confirm that the percentage rises and the magnetic connection stays in place.
- Check battery drain. Ask how long it lasts away from the charger; rapid loss suggests a worn battery.
- Pair it with your phone. Use the phone you intend to keep using, not merely the seller’s device.
- Verify notifications and Bluetooth. Check that alerts arrive and can be dismissed or acted on as expected.
- Test Wi-Fi and watch-face changes. These help reveal pairing or software problems.
- Inspect the strap and buckle. Silicone can harden, split or stretch with age.
- Keep it away from water. The 1 ATM rating is not suitable for swimming or showering, and used seals are uncertain.
- Price in the failure risk. If the asking price approaches that of a later Wear OS watch, walk away.
Michael Kors alternatives
Michael Kors Gen 6 Bradshaw
The Gen 6 Bradshaw is the clearest same-brand upgrade. Its official specifications include a Snapdragon Wear 4100+, a 1.28-inch AMOLED display, heart-rate and SpO2 sensors, GPS, payment technology and 5 ATM or swimproof positioning. One official listing showed a $350 price signal, although availability varied. Verify current stock and phone compatibility before buying.
It keeps the fashion-watch approach but removes many of the Dylan’s technical compromises. It is the better choice when you want a Michael Kors design and intend to use the watch daily.

Michael Kors Gen 4 Runway
The Gen 4 Runway offers a later Wear OS generation, AMOLED display, heart-rate tracking, payment features and swimproof functionality. It is a closer style alternative than a modern performance watch, but it is also old enough that battery condition and software support must be checked carefully.

Michael Kors Gen 4 MKGO
The Gen 4 MKGO is the sportier option, with lightweight aluminum-and-nylon construction, a 43mm case, AMOLED display, heart-rate tracking, GPS, payments and swimproof positioning. It is more suitable for active use than the Dylan, though less traditional and less premium-looking. Availability may be limited.

Michael Kors Gen 5E MKGO
The Gen 5E MKGO adds newer Wear OS hardware, estimated heart-rate tracking, payment methods, a speaker and Bluetooth calling. An official page showed a $225 price signal reduced from $250, but also showed sold-out signals, so treat that as a historical or clearance reference rather than guaranteed inventory.

Final verdict
As a 2016 product: the Michael Kors Access Dylan was stylish, recognizable and reasonably capable. Its Snapdragon Wear 2100 platform, notifications, watch-face customization and Google apps made it a real smartwatch rather than a fashion accessory with a screen. For its time, it was one of the better-looking Android Wear options.
As a 2026 purchase: it is only worthwhile at a low price, with a verified working charger, acceptable battery health and confirmed pairing with your phone. Buy it for the designer appearance, basic notifications or vintage-watch novelty—not for dependable daily communication, fitness tracking, health monitoring, payments, swimming or long-term software support.
