Rivian launched its native Apple Watch companion app on February 19, 2026, alongside vehicle software update 2026.03. It lets owners lock or unlock the vehicle, vent the windows, sound the alarm, adjust cabin temperature, set a target state of charge, and view vehicle information from the wrist. However, the app is not automatically a complete replacement for a vehicle key: passive, approach-to-unlock entry is primarily a Gen 2 Digital Key feature.
What Rivian’s Apple Watch app does
The app extends Rivian’s existing iPhone ownership experience to Apple Watch rather than creating a separate vehicle platform. Rivian says owners can use it to:
- Lock and unlock the doors
- Vent the windows
- Sound the vehicle alarm
- Adjust cabin temperature
- Set a target state of charge with the Digital Crown
- Check vehicle status at a glance
Owners can also choose up to four customizable quick controls. The feature is useful for short interactions—checking the vehicle, changing the cabin temperature, or unlocking the doors—without taking out an iPhone.

The watch app’s remote commands and Rivian Digital Key are related but different features. Pressing an unlock button in the app sends a vehicle command; it does not, by itself, prove that the watch has been provisioned as a proximity-based key.

Rivian announced the app with software update 2026.03. The broader release information is available in Rivian’s 2026.03 announcement.
Apple Watch app versus Rivian Digital Key

Rivian Digital Key places a vehicle key in Apple Wallet on a compatible iPhone and Apple Watch. Rivian says the system uses the Car Connectivity Consortium standard and can provide passive entry on eligible Gen 2 vehicles.
That distinction matters: an Apple Watch may be able to send a remote unlock command while still not being authorized to start and drive the vehicle as a passive key.
Gen 1 and Gen 2 Rivians behave differently

In practical terms, Gen 2 is the stronger fit for buyers specifically seeking a hands-free watch-based key. A Gen 1 owner can still benefit from the watch app’s remote controls, but should not buy an Apple Watch expecting automatic Gen 2-equivalent entry.

Compatibility and software requirements
Rivian’s published Digital Key launch compatibility list included an iPhone XS or newer and an Apple Watch Series 6 or newer. Those are Digital Key launch requirements, not necessarily a complete list of every Apple Watch model capable of installing the companion app. Check the current Rivian App Store listing for current iOS and watchOS requirements.
The key software signals are:
- Vehicle: Rivian software 2026.03 for the Apple Watch app launch.
- iPhone: The current Rivian app, updated through the App Store.
- Apple Watch: A supported model with the watchOS version required by the current app.
- Digital Key: A compatible vehicle, account, device, and Apple Wallet provisioning. Rivian’s earlier Digital Key rollout was for Gen 2 vehicles and specified Rivian app version 3.8.0 or newer at that time.
Do not treat app version 3.8.0 as the current Apple Watch app requirement; it was the historical requirement Rivian published for the earlier Digital Key rollout. App and vehicle software are updated independently.
Rivian’s launch material does not identify Apple Watch cellular service as a prerequisite. It also does not establish that every watch control works without a network connection. Remote commands may require communication with Rivian’s servers, while Wallet and NFC behavior can work differently.
How to install the Apple Watch app
- Update the Rivian app on the paired iPhone.
- Confirm that the vehicle has received software 2026.03 or a later release that includes the feature.
- Open Apple’s Watch app on the iPhone and look under Available Apps, or open the Rivian listing if it is already installed.
- Install Rivian on the Apple Watch.
- Open the watch app and allow it to synchronize with the Rivian account.
- Select the correct vehicle if the account contains more than one Rivian.
- Arrange up to four preferred quick controls.
Apple and Rivian can change menu labels between iOS, watchOS, and app releases, so the exact path may differ slightly. Keep the iPhone nearby during the first synchronization.

How to set up Rivian Digital Key
- Confirm that the vehicle is eligible. Rivian’s original launch announcement specified Gen 2 vehicles.
- Update the Rivian app and vehicle software.
- Start the Digital Key enrollment flow in the Rivian app when prompted.
- Follow the pairing instructions in and around the vehicle.
- Add the Rivian key to Apple Wallet on the iPhone.
- Provision the key on the Apple Watch when prompted.
- Test locking, unlocking, entry, and driving before relying on the watch as your only key.
Rivian says the key is stored in the device’s operating-system-controlled wallet and protected by secure hardware. It also describes NFC as a backup access method when supported, with the vehicle reader located on the driver-side door handle.
How passive entry works on Gen 2
On a supported Gen 2 vehicle with Digital Key configured, the owner approaches with the authorized device. Rivian says the vehicle can unlock automatically, allowing the driver to enter and drive without manually opening the app. Its Digital Key description also says walking away can trigger automatic locking, with haptic feedback on the iPhone and Apple Watch indicating locking and unlocking.
Passive entry depends on more than simply owning an Apple Watch. Vehicle generation, compatible hardware, Wallet provisioning, device proximity, power, and software rollout all matter. It is not the same as tapping a remote unlock button in the watch app.

Rivian says Digital Key supports up to eight digital keys per vehicle, including the owner’s key and keys shared with other drivers. Keys can be shared with family or friends through text message.

A shared key is not the same as sharing a Rivian account password. When a driver’s access changes, revoke the key through the relevant Rivian or Wallet management flow. Do the same for a sold or replaced iPhone, a lost Apple Watch, or any device belonging to a former driver. The recipient experience may differ when sharing across Apple, Google, and Samsung devices.

Remote controls
Climate commands, charging adjustments, and other app actions may need the watch or paired system to reach Rivian’s servers. Do not assume the app can issue every command without connectivity.
Wallet key
Rivian describes NFC fallback when ultra-wideband is unavailable and notes device power-reserve behavior. That does not mean every dead Apple Watch can unlock every Rivian. The result depends on the device, vehicle, battery state, and the specific Wallet implementation.
Keep a backup access method available: a physical key card or key fob where applicable, an iPhone, or another authorized driver. If all access methods fail, contact Rivian support or roadside assistance.

Troubleshooting common problems
The app appears on the watch but says support is unavailable
- Check the vehicle’s software version.
- Update the Rivian iPhone app.
- Restart the Apple Watch.
- Open the iPhone app and select the correct vehicle.
- Reopen the watch app while the iPhone is nearby.
- Contact Rivian support if the enrollment prompt never appears.
A missing feature can reflect an incomplete vehicle rollout, account synchronization, vehicle-generation limits, or a multi-vehicle selection problem. Avoid deleting a working key during troubleshooting unless Rivian support specifically tells you to do so.
The watch locks the vehicle but cannot drive it
Remote lock/unlock and driving authorization are separate. Check that the Digital Key is actually in Apple Wallet, that the vehicle and app software are current, and that the account and vehicle generation support the required driving workflow. Gen 1 and Gen 2 behavior should not be assumed to be identical.
Passive entry does not work
- Confirm that Digital Key was added to Apple Wallet on the iPhone and Watch where applicable.
- Make sure the watch is being worn and unlocked.
- Verify that the correct vehicle is selected.
- Check that proximity conditions are not being blocked and that the device has sufficient power.
- Test near the driver-side door and use NFC fallback if supported.
- Keep the phone or physical key available while diagnosing the issue.
Should you buy an Apple Watch for Rivian access?
For an existing owner with a supported Apple Watch, the app is a meaningful convenience upgrade. It is especially compelling for Gen 2 owners who can configure Digital Key and want passive entry. For a Gen 1 owner, the remote controls may be useful, but the feature alone is a weak reason to buy a watch if the main goal is hands-free entry.

A current model may be a safer long-term choice than an older used watch because battery health, operating-system support, and future Rivian compatibility can change. Cellular service is not established as necessary by Rivian’s launch material, so it should not be purchased solely for this feature.
Prospective vehicle buyers should verify the R1T or R1S generation, software status, and Digital Key eligibility with Rivian or the seller. Rivian’s R2 page separately markets smartwatch digital-key access, but future-model timing, trims, software behavior, and pricing should not be used as proof of current R1 functionality.
The practical verdict
Rivian’s Apple Watch app makes everyday vehicle controls more convenient and gives owners a useful wrist-based interface. It is not, by itself, a universal Apple Watch replacement for every Rivian key. Gen 2 owners with a properly configured Rivian Digital Key get the clearest passive-entry and phone-free driving experience; Gen 1 owners should expect the app’s remote controls and follow Rivian’s published access workflow. Update the vehicle and apps, complete Wallet enrollment where eligible, test the setup thoroughly, and keep a backup key before leaving the conventional key behind.
