Many Garmin watches can record indoor rowing, but the data you get depends on your watch, rowing machine, and connection. Start with the watch’s Indoor Rowing or Row Indoor activity for a basic workout log. To capture machine-supplied figures such as distance, pace, or power, you also need a compatible rower and watch; Garmin’s guidance specifically describes pairing compatible indoor rowers over ANT+. For outdoor rowing, check whether your watch offers a suitable outdoor profile. Garmin’s compatibility guidance and your model’s manual are the best checks before you rely on a feature.

Choose the right rowing setup

“Rowing with Garmin” can mean recording a workout on your watch, receiving data from the rowing machine, or importing a workout recorded in another app. These are different workflows:

  • Watch only: Start Indoor Rowing and record time, heart rate, and other watch-supported workout data. This is the simplest option when the machine does not transmit data the watch can use. Machine distance, pace, or power may be absent or estimated.
  • Watch plus rower: Pair a compatible indoor rower as a sensor, then record the activity on the watch. This can add machine-supplied metrics, but only when the rower, connection, activity profile, and watch all support them.
  • Rower app plus Garmin: Record on the machine or its companion app, then use an available synchronization or export route to send a workout to Garmin Connect. This can preserve machine-specific intervals and logs, but imported details and training effects may differ from a watch-recorded activity.
  • Outdoor rowing: Use an outdoor rowing profile if your model provides one. On-water tracking has different needs, including GPS and route recording; Indoor Rowing and an outdoor Row profile are not interchangeable.

A generic Cardio activity can serve as a fallback if no rowing profile is available, but it may not use rowing-specific screens or sensor handling. Manual entry after the session is a last resort, not a way to recreate the data of a recorded workout.

  1. Check the watch’s activity list for Indoor Rowing, Row Indoor, or the relevant outdoor rowing profile.
  2. Look in the model’s owner’s manual for sensor support and activity-specific data fields.
  3. Check Garmin’s indoor-rower compatibility page if you want to pair a machine.
  4. Update the watch software and synchronize it with Garmin Connect.

Garmin sells watches across families including Forerunner, vívoactive, Venu, fēnix, Instinct, Enduro, quatix, and tactix, but a family name or product listing does not establish support for every rowing feature. Use the exact model’s manual and current compatibility information rather than relying on a static list. See Garmin’s watch catalog and Connect IQ compatibility list as starting points.

How to add Indoor Rowing to a Garmin watch

On many watches, the general route from the watch face is:

  1. Press START/STOP to open activities.
  2. Choose Edit, then Add.
  3. Open the relevant activity folder, if one is shown.
  4. Select Indoor Rowing or Row Indoor.
  5. Select Done, then confirm with Done again if prompted.

Button names, folders, and labels vary by watch. Garmin’s activity-addition instructions explain the general process; use your model’s manual if you do not see Edit or Add.

On supported devices, you may also manage profiles in the Garmin Connect app: open More > Garmin Devices > select your watch, then look for Activities, Activity Options, or Activities & Apps. Add or restore the profile and synchronize. Menu labels vary by device generation. Garmin documents additional restoration options, including Garmin Express for some devices, in its activity profile guidance.

If it still does not appear, check whether the profile is hidden or removed, whether your model supports it, whether the watch has reached its activity-profile limit, and whether the latest sync completed. A Connect IQ app may add a separate workflow on a compatible device, but it does not automatically enable unsupported native features.

How to connect an indoor rower or sensor

Adding the activity profile and pairing a machine are separate steps. Garmin’s support guidance describes compatible indoor-rower connections using ANT+; it does not mean that any rower that connects to a phone over Bluetooth can pair directly with a Garmin watch. Both the watch and the rower must support a connection Garmin can interpret.

  1. Update the watch and wake the rowing machine.
  2. Enable the machine’s ANT+ broadcast or other connection mode supported by your exact watch and rower.
  3. On the watch, open the rowing activity’s settings or Sensors & Accessories.
  4. Choose Add New (or the model’s equivalent) and select the detected indoor rower.
  5. Start Indoor Rowing and check the data screens before your workout to confirm that the expected machine metrics appear.

Exact sensor menus vary, so follow the watch manual if these labels do not match. Depending on the compatible combination, Garmin says the rower may provide fields such as Distance, Pace, Power, and Stroke Distance. These are possible fields, not a promise that every watch or rower supplies all of them.

  • The Double-track, Smooth, Comfortable: Our dual slide rail is designed by imitating the wood rowing machine. It is more stable than one rail. It prevents the flip-over when rowing. The maximum weight of 350 pounds allows more exerciser to achieve their fitness goals.
  • Easy Assemble: The Merach rowing machine can be easily assembled within 30 mins by most users. It is partially pre-assembled and can be moved around easily.
  • Record on Garmin: If your watch and Concept2 setup support direct pairing, pair the machine, start Indoor Rowing on the watch, and save the activity there. This keeps a watch-recorded activity in your Garmin history and can contribute watch-captured heart-rate and training data.
  • Record in ErgData or the Concept2 Logbook: Use the Concept2 workflow when its machine-native log, workouts, or interval detail is your priority. Check the current connection or export route for Garmin rather than assuming a complete automatic transfer.
  • Record on both: Some users want Garmin’s watch data and Concept2’s detailed record. Two upload paths can create duplicate activities in Garmin Connect. Compare the records and choose a primary copy; timestamps, calories, intervals, power data, and training effects may not match.

Garmin’s direct sensor guidance is here. Concept2 also publishes indoor-rower specifications. Check the exact monitor, connection method, and watch model rather than treating app compatibility as proof of direct watch pairing.

What data Garmin may record

The activity can combine watch data, machine data, and information imported from an app; the sources are not equivalent.

Data source Examples What to keep in mind
Watch Elapsed time, wrist heart rate, calories, and supported training or wellness metrics Availability depends on the watch, activity profile, and settings. Motion-derived rowing information can vary by model.
Rower or sensor Distance, pace or split, power, stroke distance, and possibly stroke-related metrics Only appears when the machine transmits it and the watch/profile supports it.
Machine app or import Machine-specific intervals, workouts, rankings, or logbook details Imported fields and training effects may differ from a native Garmin recording.

Do not assume every model calculates rowing-specific VO₂ max, personal records, or identical training-load summaries. Those outputs depend on the watch, software, profile, and data source.

Troubleshooting rowing on Garmin

“Indoor Rowing” is missing

  1. Search for both Indoor Rowing and Row Indoor.
  2. Check whether the profile is hidden or was removed.
  3. Add it from the watch activity editor, or use Garmin Connect’s device activity settings on supported devices.
  4. Synchronize, then update the watch software.
  5. If needed, use Garmin Express to restore profiles where supported, and consult the exact model manual and Garmin compatibility page.

The rower is not detected

  • Confirm that the rower broadcasts using a protocol supported by the watch; phone Bluetooth pairing alone is not enough to establish Garmin compatibility.
  • Make sure the machine is awake, transmitting, and within pairing range.
  • Check whether a phone or tablet is already connected in a way that prevents the machine from broadcasting to another device.
  • Verify that the watch supports indoor-rower pairing and that its software is current.
  • Retry from the watch’s sensor settings. If the machine appears but cannot be selected, its broadcast profile may not be one Garmin can use.

The workout records, but distance or power is missing

The session may have been recorded watch-only, the rower may not have been paired or broadcasting, or that watch/profile may not support the field. Confirm that you chose Indoor Rowing rather than generic Cardio, pair the sensor before starting, and inspect the activity’s available data fields. Even a successful connection does not guarantee every metric.

Two rowing sessions appear in Garmin Connect

This commonly happens when both the watch and a machine app upload the same session. Decide which copy should be primary: the Garmin activity if watch heart rate and Garmin training history matter most, or the machine-app record if its intervals and logbook detail matter most. Delete the extra copy if appropriate, then review upload settings to prevent repeats. Do not expect the records to merge cleanly; their durations, calories, distance, and training effects may differ.

Only manual activity entry is available

Manual entry can fill a gap in your history, but it cannot reconstruct a recorded workout. Garmin says manual activities lack GPS maps, variable speed, laps, custom intervals, and wellness data such as heart rate, and their calorie estimates may be less accurate. See Garmin’s manual activity guidance.

A Connect IQ rowing app is unavailable

Apps and data fields are device-specific. Check the exact watch in the Connect IQ Store and Garmin’s compatible-device list. A third-party app may use different fields and export behavior from Garmin’s native profile, and it may create another upload path or duplicate workout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Garmin track rowing without a rowing machine?

Yes, if your watch has an Indoor Rowing or suitable rowing activity profile. It can record a workout without pairing to a machine, but machine-specific distance, pace, or power may be missing.

Does Garmin Connect+ have to be enabled to record rowing?

No. Connect+ Live Activity is an optional phone-viewing feature on compatible devices; it is not the basic requirement for saving an Indoor Rowing activity on the watch.

Is Bluetooth enough to connect a rower directly to a Garmin watch?

Not necessarily. A rower’s ability to connect to a phone over Bluetooth does not establish that it can pair with your watch. Check the watch and rower manuals and Garmin’s compatibility guidance; Garmin specifically documents compatible indoor-rower pairing over ANT+.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I add a rowing activity after I finish?

You can add a manual activity in Garmin Connect, but it will not recreate the data captured by a watch or machine. Garmin lists limitations including missing heart-rate wellness data, laps, custom intervals, GPS maps, and variable speed.

Does rowing count toward Garmin intensity minutes?

It may, depending on your watch, recorded heart-rate data, settings, and the workout. Check the activity and intensity-minute totals on your own device; the available metrics are model-dependent.

Can Garmin calculate rowing VO₂ max?

Do not assume so. Rowing-specific VO₂ max availability is not universal; consult the manual for your exact watch and software.
