Mostly, yes. The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are a meaningful running upgrade over the original Pro: they are smaller and lighter, and their twist-to-adjust stabilizer gives many runners a more convincing fit. Add IP54-rated earbuds, long battery life and Transparency mode, and they make sense as one premium pair for runs and everyday listening. But no in-ear shape fits every ear. If earbuds routinely work loose for you, or you need ear-hook retention, the Pro 2 are not a sure bet.
What changed—and why it matters on a run
Google redesigned the Pro 2 with a smaller shell and a stabilizer that you twist into position in the ear. Each earbud weighs 4.7 grams with the medium tip, and the US Google Store listing includes extra-small, small, medium and large eartips. That is a better starting point for active use than simply hoping a smooth earbud stays put.
The improvement is meaningful, not universal. Independent testing describes the buds as light and suitable for workouts, while individual user reports include both secure sweaty runs and problems with slipping or moisture-sensitive controls. Those reports are anecdotal, not a measure of how often issues occur. Google’s ear-scan and wear-testing work explains the design intent; it cannot guarantee a fit for your ears.
Compared with the original Pixel Buds Pro, the Pro 2 address size and fit more directly. That does not mean the original was unusable for running, or that the new version cannot move. Running adds repeated impact, head turns and sweat; a comfortable fit while sitting is not proof of secure retention at speed.

Fit them before trusting them on a long run
- Start with the medium tips, then seat each bud and twist the stabilizer into place.
- On a compatible Android phone, open Pixel Buds settings → Device details → Sound → Eartip Seal Check. Google recommends trying different sizes for each ear, so do not assume both need the same tip.
- If a bud feels loose, try a larger tip; if it presses or becomes uncomfortable, try a smaller one. Run the seal check again after changing sizes.
- Walk, turn your head, shake it gently and jog briefly. Check both ears again once you are warm and sweating before committing to intervals or a long route.
Keep three separate questions in mind: seal affects bass, passive isolation and ANC; retention is whether the bud stays physically put; comfort is whether the fit remains tolerable over time. Passing the seal check does not prove that an earbud will stay secure during a sprint, and a secure bud can still have a poor acoustic seal.
If one side keeps loosening after you have tried different tip sizes and reinsertion, that is useful evidence of an anatomy mismatch—not a reason to keep forcing the fit. Buy from somewhere with a clear return policy and test them with a short run before relying on them for a race or long workout.
How they suit different kinds of running
- Easy road runs: A well-fitted pair should be a strong all-round option. Use Transparency mode, keep volume moderate and remain visually alert; no listening mode guarantees you will hear every vehicle or cyclist.
- Intervals, sprints and steep descents: These movements are a more demanding retention test than steady jogging. The stabilizer may help, but if either bud shifts during a short trial, do not assume it will behave better at race pace.
- Long runs: Their low weight helps, but it does not ensure comfort for every ear. Pay attention to stabilizer pressure or irritation as time passes, especially after sweat builds up. The buds’ rated battery capacity is ample on paper for most single runs.
- Treadmill and gym: ANC is useful where environmental awareness is less critical, and the fit can be tested without traffic nearby. Conversation Detection can pause audio and switch from Noise Cancellation to Transparency when you speak, though it may also activate if you talk to yourself or sing along.
- High-sweat sessions: Moisture can affect the controls independently of retention. If gestures misfire, disable touch gestures before the workout rather than treating accidental pauses as proof that the buds are falling out.
- Rain: Light rain is a reasonable use case for the water-resistant earbuds, but do not treat the rating as permission for heavy or prolonged exposure. Dry them before putting them in the case or charging.
Transparency for roads, ANC for enclosed spaces
The Pro 2 support Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency, Adaptive Audio and Conversation Detection. For a run near traffic, people or bicycles, Transparency is generally the more sensible choice than ANC. Adaptive Audio adjusts to changing sound conditions, but it is not a hazard detector. Even in Transparency mode, keep volume down enough to notice what is around you and make route decisions with your eyes, not just your earbuds.

ANC is better suited to treadmill sessions, travel and noisy gyms. Do not expect it to remove every sound, and do not assume that switching modes solves fit problems: weak bass or disappointing noise reduction can result from a poor eartip seal. Try another size and reseat the buds before concluding the ANC itself is at fault.

Google lists wind-blocking mesh covers and voice accelerometers among the Pro 2’s voice features. That is not a guarantee of quiet listening or clear calls into a headwind. Wind can be intrusive, and a runner’s breathing can affect calls. RTINGS includes wind-handling and microphone assessments in its testing; consult its results if those are deciding factors, rather than treating the product’s microphone design claims as proof of performance on your route.
Sweat, water and the touch-control catch
The earbuds are rated IP54; the charging case is IPX4. IP54 means limited dust protection and resistance to water splashes—not waterproofing or protection against submersion. The case has a different rating and should not be treated as equally protected. Google cautions that water resistance can diminish with wear, damage, repairs or disassembly.
Google also warns that sweat, rain or other liquid on the touch surface or sensors can register as a gesture. That can mean an unintended pause or volume change even while the buds remain physically secure. If it happens, switch off touch gestures for the wet workout, wipe the surface, and use phone controls or voice commands. This is a separate issue from fit.
After a wet run, take the earbuds out, wipe them and let them dry before charging. Keep the case dry before putting wet buds inside; do not submerge the earbuds or case, hold them under a running tap, or charge visibly wet earbuds. If charging trouble continues after drying and gently cleaning the contacts, contact Google support.

Battery and phone compatibility
Google rates battery life at up to 12 hours per charge with ANC off (up to 48 hours including the case) and up to 8 hours with ANC on (up to 30 hours with the case). A five-minute charge is rated for up to 1.5 hours of listening with ANC off. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes; calls, high volume, ANC, temperature and other conditions can reduce them. They should cover most individual runs, but check charge before leaving rather than planning around the maximum figure. The case charges over USB-C or Qi-certified wireless charging.
Basic Bluetooth playback works with compatible devices across Android, iOS, tablets and laptops. The fuller feature set is Android-oriented: Google lists requirements including a Google Account, internet access and a companion phone running Android 6.0 or newer, with some features needing more specific devices. Pixel and Android users get the most natural access to Fast Pair and Pixel Buds settings, as well as Google Assistant or Gemini access, Find Hub, Multipoint, audio switching and supported spatial-audio features. Availability varies by phone and feature.
Multipoint can connect the buds to two source devices and switch between the last two connected devices when enabled. An iPhone can use them as Bluetooth earbuds, but they are a less compelling purchase if you mainly want Apple-specific integration; check the current requirements for any advanced feature you care about.

Choose the Pixel Buds Pro 2 if you use a Pixel or Android phone and want one lightweight premium pair for running, commuting, calls and everyday listening. They are especially appealing if the original Pro fit did not suit you and you want ANC, Transparency mode, wireless charging and a long published battery estimate in the same earbuds.

Be cautious if in-ear buds often fall out, you sweat heavily and rely on touch controls, or you need retention you can trust through sharp impacts. A short trial—accelerating, turning your head and running downhill—is more revealing than a fit test at a desk. If the buds keep moving after tip changes, an ear-hook sports design is a more sensible direction.
Choose by need rather than assuming one alternative is best for everyone:
- For more mechanical retention: Consider an ear-hook sports earbud, such as the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2. Verify current fit, features and price before choosing.
- For more environmental awareness: Consider an open-ear option such as the Shokz OpenRun line. It does not provide the sealed in-ear fit or ANC of the Pixel buds.
- For a lower-cost Google option: Pixel Buds 2a offer a more budget-oriented route into Google’s earbuds, but have fewer premium features and lower rated battery figures. Check the current price and exact feature set before buying.
- For an iPhone-first setup: Apple- or Beats-oriented models may integrate more naturally with your phone.
- For travel-first noise cancellation: Compare premium Sony or Bose earbuds, but evaluate running retention separately; stronger ANC does not mean a more secure running fit.
For an Android runner who wants one pair for both exercise and daily use, the Pro 2 are a strong, much-improved option. “They finally nailed it” is fair as a verdict on Google’s redesign, not as a promise that the fit works for every ear. The deciding test is whether your pair stays comfortable and secure once you start moving and sweating.
