The original Galaxy Buds Pro is the more feature-rich earbud, with IPX7 water resistance, two-way speakers and Voice Detect. The lighter Galaxy Buds2 is the stronger value pick when comfort, a lower price and a more neutral sound matter more. These are both 2021 models; don’t confuse the Galaxy Buds2 with the different 2022 Galaxy Buds2 Pro. In 2026, condition and price matter as much as the spec sheet.

Battery figures are ratings, not promises: volume, calls, codec, ambient mode, temperature, fit and battery age all affect runtime. With ANC on, Buds2 has the higher rated total including the case; with ANC off, the Pro is rated slightly longer per charge.

Which one is newer—and what does “Buds2” mean?
The Galaxy Buds Pro and Galaxy Buds2 are both 2021 products. The original Buds Pro was Samsung’s premium model; the Buds2 followed as the smaller, lower-priced standard option. The Galaxy Buds2 Pro is a separate 2022 successor to the original Buds Pro, not another name for either earbud here. Samsung’s 2026 interim report lists Galaxy Buds4 and Buds4 Pro as March 2026 products, so these 2021 earbuds are legacy choices rather than the current generation.

Which is more comfortable for everyday wear?
The Buds2 is lighter: 5.0g per earbud versus 6.3g for the Pro. That makes it the sensible first one to try if you have small or sensitive ears, feel pressure from heavier earbuds, or listen for hours at a time. Its lower weight does not guarantee a better fit, though. Ear shape, nozzle depth, housing shape and tip seal matter, and the Pro may feel more secure in some ears.
- For long sessions or ear fatigue, start with the Buds2.
- If a stable seal is important for ANC, try both shapes and every included tip size.
- For exercise, consider retention and water protection separately: a comfortable bud that slips out is not a good workout fit.
Which sounds better?
The Pro has the more elaborate hardware: an 11mm woofer and 6.5mm tweeter in a two-way arrangement. The Buds2 uses a single dynamic driver. That is a real design difference, but it does not make the Pro an automatic listening-quality winner. Driver count alone cannot establish which tuning you will prefer.

The Pro may appeal if you want its distinct two-way presentation; the Buds2 may suit listeners who prefer a less colored sound. Your result also depends on fit, EQ and playback device, so treat either model’s sound as a preference rather than a universal ranking.

Do the Pro’s ANC and ambient controls work better?
Both models provide active noise cancellation and ambient listening. Samsung specifies two ANC levels and four ambient-sound levels for the Pro; the Buds2 also offers ANC and adjustable ambient listening. Those controls make the Pro more configurable, but they do not settle which blocks more noise for you.
Noise cancellation depends heavily on a good ear-tip seal and on the noise itself: low-frequency hum, sharper sounds and wind behave differently. Try the tips and check the seal before judging either pair. Samsung’s launch announcement described “up to 99 percent” noise reduction for the Pro, but tied that figure to laboratory verification at 118.43Hz; it is not a claim of the same reduction in every real-world setting.

How do battery life and charging compare?
On Samsung’s rated figures, both offer up to five hours of playback per charge with ANC on. Including the charging case, the Buds2 is rated for up to 20 hours with ANC on, compared with up to 18 hours for the Pro. With ANC off, the Pro is rated at up to eight hours per charge against 7.5 for the Buds2; totals including the case are 28 and 29 hours, respectively. Both cases support wireless charging.
Those ratings describe the products when new under manufacturer conditions, not what an old or second-hand pair will deliver. Battery wear can reduce runtime substantially, and one earbud may drain faster than the other. For a used listing, ask about actual playback time, each bud’s battery behavior, case charging and whether wireless charging still works.
Is the Pro’s IPX7 rating worth choosing it?
The Pro is the clear paper winner for water resistance: it is rated IPX7, while the Buds2 is rated IPX2. Samsung says the Pro was tested for immersion in up to 1 meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions. That does not make it suitable for swimming or protect it from salt water, soap or high-pressure water. Do not put wet earbuds in the case; dry the buds and charging contacts fully first.
The Buds2’s IPX2 rating is much more limited and should not be treated as reliable protection in heavy rain or intense sweat. If workouts or exposure to rain are a regular part of your use, the Pro’s higher rating is a meaningful advantage, but neither rating is a reason to swim with the earbuds.

Do not assume the premium model is better on calls. In RTINGS’ comparison, the Buds2 has an advantage in microphone recording quality. That is a test result, not a guarantee for every room, windy street, traffic-heavy commute or video meeting; microphone performance can vary with environment and device.

The Buds2 lists Bluetooth 5.2 and the Pro Bluetooth 5.0, but the newer Bluetooth number does not by itself guarantee better sound, range, latency, stability or simultaneous connections. Samsung lists the same codecs for both—Samsung Scalable Codec, AAC and SBC—so codec and device compatibility matter more than the version number alone.

Both support Bixby, 360 Audio and wireless charging, while the Pro adds Voice Detect, SmartThings Find compatibility and more advanced ANC and ambient controls. Some functions depend on a Galaxy device, Galaxy Wearable app, compatible software or Samsung codec; they are not universal features on iPhone, Windows or every Android phone. Samsung ecosystem switching should also not be mistaken for guaranteed universal Bluetooth multipoint between arbitrary devices.
What should you pay for one in 2026?
The launch prices—$149 for Buds2 and $199 for Buds Pro—are historical reference points, not reliable current prices. For older models, condition can outweigh the nominal discount: an inexpensive Pro with a tired battery, missing case or poor return terms may be worse value than a healthier Buds2. No single current price can be assumed across new-old stock, refurbished and used listings.
- If the Pro costs only a little more and its fit works for you, its IPX7 rating and extra features can justify the premium.
- If the Pro costs substantially more, the Buds2 is the better value unless water protection or a Pro-only feature matters to you.
- If either listing approaches the price of a newer-generation earbud, compare the newer model first for a fresher battery and more current feature set.
Before buying, check that the listing names the exact model, says whether it is new, refurbished or used, includes the charging case and states the seller’s return policy and warranty. Ask for battery-runtime details where possible, confirm the seller and model number, and be cautious of listings with unclear authenticity or incomplete accessories.
Which model should you choose?
- Choose Galaxy Buds2 for lighter wear, a lower purchase price, and a sound profile independent testing found more neutral.
- Choose Galaxy Buds Pro for IPX7 water resistance, two-way speaker hardware, Voice Detect and more adjustable listening controls—provided you like its fit.
- Choose neither if dependable multi-device multipoint, a known-fresh battery, current-generation features or stronger evidence for noisy-environment calls is essential. Compare newer earbuds before accepting the compromises of old stock.
