Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag2 is a good-value item finder for Samsung Galaxy owners. It can help locate keys, luggage, bags, bikes and other belongings through Bluetooth, Samsung’s finding network and—on compatible Galaxy phones—Ultra-Wideband precision finding. But it is not a GPS tracker, it does not work as a full-featured tracker with iPhone, and remote recovery depends on nearby participating Galaxy devices.
That makes SmartTag2 an easy recommendation for people already invested in Samsung’s ecosystem, especially at the four-pack price. It is a poor choice for iPhone owners, non-Samsung Android users and anyone who needs continuous live location.
Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 price and value
Samsung US prices observed on August 18, 2026, were $29.99 for one SmartTag2 and $69.99 for a four-pack. That makes the four-pack approximately $17.50 per tag, before tax and shipping.

Prices and availability can change, so these figures are a snapshot rather than a permanent market comparison. The four-pack makes the most sense for a household tracking several items—such as keys, luggage, a camera bag and a bike. A single tag is more practical if you are trying the category for the first time.

Samsung does not charge a separate subscription for the tag’s basic tracking features, according to its support documentation. Ownership is not entirely cost-free, however: the replaceable battery will eventually need changing, and some items may need a case, collar holder or mount.
What Galaxy SmartTag2 actually does
SmartTag2 is a small Bluetooth Low Energy item finder that connects to Samsung’s SmartThings Find ecosystem. It is designed to help you recover a misplaced belonging, not to independently calculate and transmit its location like a cellular GPS device.
- Nearby finding: Your Galaxy phone communicates with the tag over Bluetooth. The SmartThings app can guide you with signal-strength information and make the tag play a sound.
- Remote finding: If the tag is outside your phone’s Bluetooth range, nearby participating Galaxy devices may detect it and relay an anonymized location update to Samsung’s service.
- UWB finding: A compatible Galaxy phone with Ultra-Wideband hardware can provide more directional or spatial guidance than ordinary Bluetooth searching.
- Lost Mode: You can register contact information and a message. If someone finds the tag and scans it with an NFC-capable phone while online, that information can be displayed.
- Button functions: The built-in button can help ring a connected phone and can support SmartThings automations, depending on your configuration.
The distinction between these modes matters. A map position reported by another Galaxy device is not the same as a live location, and the last location shown in the app may be old if the tag’s battery is dead or no compatible device has passed nearby.

SmartTag2 is intended for Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android 9 or later. Samsung account sign-in and registration through SmartThings Find are required. “Works with Android” is therefore too broad: an Android phone from another manufacturer is not automatically a compatible SmartTag2 host.

Basic SmartTag2 use is broadly available on supported Galaxy devices running Android 9 or later, but precision-finding features are limited to Galaxy models with UWB hardware. Not every recent Galaxy phone has UWB, particularly among lower-cost Galaxy A-series models. Check the exact phone model before buying if Compass View or similar precision guidance is important.
iPhone owners should choose an Apple AirTag through Apple’s Find My ecosystem instead. For a household using a mixture of iPhone and Android devices, a cross-platform option such as Tile is a more natural starting point. Non-Samsung Android users should also check alternatives such as Motorola’s Moto Tag, while verifying current model and service compatibility.
How reliable is SmartTag2?
When the tag is nearby
Nearby finding is the most predictable use case. If your keys are in the house, a bag is in the car park or a remote is behind the sofa, the app can search for the tag over Bluetooth and activate its built-in speaker. Walls, concrete, steel, vehicles, metal objects, interference and the tag’s orientation can weaken the signal. Treat the result as proximity guidance rather than a guaranteed distance measurement.
When the tag is far away
Remote finding depends on the Samsung Galaxy devices around the lost item. A tag in a populated area may receive more opportunities for detection than one in a rural location, underground garage or sparsely travelled road. Samsung does not make this equivalent to uninterrupted worldwide coverage, and the tag cannot guarantee recovery of stolen property or an item deliberately shielded from radio signals.

A tag inside a vehicle can be especially difficult to locate because the vehicle’s metal body can attenuate Bluetooth signals. A tag left inside a parked car may not update until another compatible Galaxy device passes near it or you approach close enough to connect directly.
What UWB adds
On a UWB-enabled Galaxy phone, SmartTag2 can offer more directional guidance when you are close to the tag. Samsung describes BLE, UWB and AR Find-related functionality in its product information. This does not turn SmartTag2 into GPS: UWB improves nearby searching only, and the phone must contain the required hardware.
Features worth knowing
Lost Mode and NFC
Lost Mode is useful when another person discovers your bag or luggage. You must opt in and preregister contact information. The finder needs an NFC-capable phone with internet access, and the feature must have been enabled before the item was lost. It is a recovery aid, not a guarantee that a finder will scan the tag or contact you.
Reverse phone finding
The tag’s button can be used to help locate a connected Galaxy phone, making SmartTag2 useful in both directions. Button actions and SmartThings automation options depend on the account and device configuration.

Attachment and form factor
The built-in attachment opening suits keyrings, luggage straps and many bags without requiring a separate adhesive mount. The design is less suitable for a slim wallet than a dedicated card-shaped tracker, and a case or specialist holder may be needed for a bike, pet collar or outdoor equipment.
Battery life and durability
SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery. Samsung rates battery life at up to 500 days under stated conditions. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed result: frequent ringing, repeated searches, alerts, settings, temperature and usage patterns can reduce runtime. Power Saving Mode can extend operation, but its real-world result also depends on configuration.
Test the tag immediately after attaching it and replace the battery when SmartThings reports low power. If the battery is dead, the app may still show an old last-known location, which should not be mistaken for a current position.
Samsung rates the device IP67 for dust and water resistance. In practical terms, it is designed to handle ordinary dust exposure and limited temporary immersion under test conditions. It is not a dive tracker, and resistance can deteriorate after wear, impact, casing damage or battery-compartment damage. Do not describe it as unlimited waterproofing.

Practical uses—and their limits

For children, people or high-value assets where frequent independent updates matter, use a cellular GPS tracker with a recurring data plan instead. Such devices generally cost more, require charging and ongoing service, but do not rely in the same way on passing phones.
Privacy and safety
SmartTag2 is an item finder, not a covert surveillance device. Do not attach a tracker to another person’s property without consent. Samsung provides unknown-tag alert functionality intended to help identify an unfamiliar tag travelling with someone; Samsung has discussed this feature in its SmartTag2 coverage. App wording and availability can change, so review the current SmartThings settings and Samsung privacy information on your device.
Lost Mode is different from an unknown-tag alert. Lost Mode voluntarily exposes the contact information you registered when a finder scans the tag. It does not mean that your personal details are automatically visible to everyone who encounters it.
Setup checklist
- Install or update the SmartThings app on a compatible Galaxy device.
- Sign in to your Samsung account.
- Remove the battery tab, if present, and press the SmartTag2 button near the phone.
- Follow the on-screen prompt to add the tag, then assign a name, location and room.
- Allow the requested Bluetooth, location, notification and finding-related permissions.
- Open the tag in SmartThings Find and test Ring, the map view and Search Nearby.
- Enable available alerts, including left-behind notifications, and configure Lost Mode if needed.
If pairing fails, confirm the exact Galaxy model and Android version, update SmartThings and the phone, check that Bluetooth and location are enabled, reseat the CR2032 battery, and keep the tag close during pairing. A tag already registered to another Samsung account may need to be removed from that account before a new owner can use it. If it still does not enter pairing mode, contact Samsung support rather than relying on an unverified reset sequence.
Should you buy the Galaxy SmartTag2?
Buy it if you own a compatible Samsung Galaxy device, your belongings can accept a keyring-style tag, and you want inexpensive recovery help rather than continuous GPS monitoring. The four-pack is particularly compelling when you have several items to protect, while the single tag is a sensible low-risk trial.
Skip it if you use an iPhone, own only a non-Samsung Android phone, need a wallet-card form factor, or expect minute-by-minute location regardless of nearby phones. Also temper expectations if you live or travel in places with few participating Galaxy devices.
SmartTag2’s appeal is straightforward: a replaceable battery, built-in speaker, IP67 rating, optional UWB precision finding and no separate basic-tracking subscription at a relatively modest upfront price. Its limitation is equally straightforward: every important part of the experience is tied to Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem and to the difference between Bluetooth-assisted finding and true independent GPS tracking.
