Samsung has not temporarily hidden a watch category. It retired the Galaxy Store’s Tizen Watch service as part of its move to Wear OS. The final shutdown date was September 30, 2025, when re-downloads of previously obtained Tizen watch content were suspended. Older Gear and Galaxy Watch models may still tell time and run installed software, but the official store is no longer a dependable source for new apps, watch faces, updates, or restoration.
The shutdown timeline
Samsung used a staged retirement rather than one switch-off. Its Seller Portal notice lists these milestones:

These are different events. Saying that “the store closed in June 2025” misses the final September termination. As of 2026, the official deadline has passed. (Samsung Seller Portal notice)

The practical dividing line is Galaxy Watch4:
- Galaxy Watch4 and newer: Wear OS Powered by Samsung, with watch apps distributed through Google Play.
- Models released before Galaxy Watch4: Tizen, including Gear S2, Gear S3, Gear Sport, the original Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Watch Active2, and Galaxy Watch3.
Branding alone can be confusing, so verify the exact model in the Galaxy Wearable app or Samsung’s model guidance. Samsung explicitly separates pre-Watch4 models from Watch4 and later devices. (Samsung support)

Why Samsung moved away from Tizen
Starting with Watch4, Samsung adopted Wear OS to give its watches a broader Android ecosystem: Google Play distribution, Google Maps, Google Fit and a more familiar environment for Android developers. Samsung’s current watches continue on that platform; this is a platform migration, not an abandonment of smartwatches.
Samsung also stopped accepting new or updated Tizen watch apps. Its developer notice directs publishers toward Wear OS, Watch Face Studio and migration tools such as the Galaxy Watch Studio Converter. Samsung does not state that cost reduction was the sole reason. However, ending registration, freezing updates, redirecting developers and finally closing distribution indicate that maintaining a separate legacy store, certification and payment channel no longer fit its unified Wear OS strategy.
What the closure means for owners
New downloads and updates
Do not expect official new downloads of Tizen watch apps or faces after the termination. Existing Tizen apps also stopped receiving normal developer updates, so there are no dependable fixes for phone compatibility, bugs, security issues or changing online services.

Previously purchased content
Samsung’s schedule allowed re-downloading purchased Tizen content only until September 30, 2025. A purchase therefore does not guarantee restoration today. Individual experiences can vary by account, region and app version, but Samsung’s published policy is the relevant baseline. Factory resets and phone changes
A reset, replacement phone or account change may require downloading content again. That makes recovery particularly uncertain for paid faces, third-party fitness apps and software with phone companions or Samsung billing. Do not factory-reset a working Tizen watch for a minor cosmetic problem without first confirming that the required software can still be restored.

What may continue working
The service shutdown affects distribution, not an automatic hardware kill switch. Depending on the watch and app, these local functions may continue:
- Time, alarms, timers and stopwatch
- Basic activity tracking and some Samsung Health functions
- Installed watch faces and local apps
- Bluetooth connection and some notifications
They are not guarantees. Apps that require a cloud account, payment entitlement, GPS service, phone companion or discontinued API can fail without warning. New installation, reinstallation, updates, paid-content verification, cloud services, payment features and pairing after a reset are more vulnerable.

Practical steps before replacing or troubleshooting
- If it works, avoid resetting it. Keep important faces and apps installed.
- Record the names of software you rely on and preserve health data using the Samsung Health options still available to you.
- If something is missing, check the watch and the Galaxy Wearable app, and confirm you are using the original Samsung account. Do not assume “purchased” means restorable after the deadline.
- For pairing trouble, check Bluetooth permissions, account sign-in and whether the current Galaxy Wearable version still supports the model. Trying another compatible Android phone can be safer than an immediate reset.
- Contact Samsung for model-specific compatibility information. Avoid unofficial watch-package or APK downloads unless you can independently verify the source, signature, legality and malware risk; Samsung does not present sideloading as an official recovery method.
What developers need to know
Tizen and Wear OS are separate targets. An existing Tizen binary or face is not automatically portable. A migration can require new packaging, certificates, billing integration, APIs and compatibility declarations, and Samsung-specific APIs may need redesign. New products should be built for Wear OS Powered by Samsung and published through Google Play, using current tools such as Watch Face Studio. The old Tizen FAQ remains useful historical documentation, not an active publishing route.
Tizen versus Wear OS: the trade-off
Tizen offered Samsung a controlled stack, smooth hardware integration and a strong battery-life reputation. Wear OS offers Play Store access, Google services, a larger Android developer audience and continued support on current Galaxy Watch generations. The transition’s cost is borne by legacy owners and developers: older users lose a dependable content channel, and a Tizen app generally needs a separate Wear OS version.
Should you keep the watch or replace it?
- Keep it if you mainly need time, alarms, notifications and existing health features, and the watch is stable. Treat it as unsupported legacy hardware.
- Choose a used Wear OS Galaxy Watch if budget matters and you can verify battery condition, exact model, LTE/Bluetooth variant, charger, account status, phone compatibility and return protection. Watch4–Watch6 devices are not equivalent to current models and may have less support remaining.
- Buy a current Samsung watch if you need new apps, reinstallation and the longest support runway. Samsung’s 2026 business report lists Galaxy Watch8 and Watch8 Classic with Wear OS 6, and Watch7 and Watch Ultra with Wear OS 5. (Samsung 2026 report)
- Check alternatives such as Apple Watch, Garmin or Fitbit according to your phone and priorities. Samsung Wear OS watches require a compatible Android phone with Google Mobile Services, so iPhone owners should verify compatibility before buying. (Samsung compatibility guidance)
The bottom line
Samsung completed a planned retirement of the Tizen Watch ecosystem, not a surprise disappearance in 2026. Galaxy Watch4 and newer devices are on Wear OS and use Google Play; Gear and Galaxy Watch3-era models remain usable only to the extent that their installed, local and companion-dependent software continues to function. Keep a working Tizen watch for basic use, but choose Wear OS when app access, reinstallation, security and long-term compatibility matter.
