The Galaxy Watch8 is Samsung’s best-balanced smartwatch in years, thanks less to headline-grabbing new sensors than to a thinner, more comfortable design, a bright display and polished Wear OS 6 software with Gemini. It is a strong everyday watch for Samsung Galaxy owners—but not a dramatic upgrade over the Watch7, and its battery still asks for frequent charging. Important health tools also depend on your phone, region and software.
Buy the 44mm Bluetooth model if it fits your wrist and you want the best balance of screen size and battery capacity. Choose 40mm for a smaller, lighter watch; consider a discounted Watch7 to save money. Skip the Watch8 if you use an iPhone, need multi-day battery life or want a dedicated endurance-sports watch.
Galaxy Watch8 review: the short version
Samsung’s standard Galaxy Watch8 is a refinement of the familiar Wear OS smartwatch, not a reinvention. Its main advance is that the watch is easier to wear around the clock. The updated case is thinner and lighter, the display is brighter, and Wear OS 6 with One UI 8 Watch feels like a capable, coherent extension of a Samsung phone. Google Gemini adds useful voice control when you want to set a timer, ask a question or act through compatible apps.
Those gains make the Watch8 a persuasive everyday watch, especially for people who track sleep as well as workouts. But the battery remains a daily-management problem, particularly on the 40mm model. Several of Samsung’s most distinctive health features are restricted to compatible Galaxy phones, and new metrics such as Antioxidant Index and Vascular Load should be treated as wellness prompts—not medical findings.

What’s new—and is it worth upgrading from Watch7?
The Watch8 brings a cushion-shaped case, a revised band attachment, a display rated by Samsung for up to 3,000 nits, the Exynos W1000 3nm processor, Wear OS 6, One UI 8 Watch and new health and assistant features. Samsung introduced the Watch8 series in July 2025. The processor and software make for a current, responsive package, but the day-to-day difference is more about comfort and presentation than a wholesale change in what a smartwatch can do.
That makes this an experience upgrade. If you have a Watch5 or Watch6 and want a more comfortable overnight watch, a brighter screen and the newer software, the case is reasonable. If you own a Watch7, the core experience—Wear OS apps, Samsung Health, GPS, sleep tracking and ECG where supported—is already familiar. The Watch8’s comfort redesign may matter, but it is difficult to justify paying full price for a dramatic leap in capability or battery life that is not there.
Samsung’s June 2026 US MSRP sheet lists Watch8 Bluetooth models at $349.99 for 40mm and $379.99 for 44mm. The comparable Watch7 Bluetooth models are listed at $249.99 and $279.99. Actual store prices can change, so compare current offers; at a substantial discount, the Watch7 is the better value if you do not need Gemini or the Watch8’s newer wellness features. Samsung’s June 2026 US MSRP sheet lists suggested prices, not live retail prices.

Design and comfort: the strongest reason to buy it
The standard Watch8’s rounded square, or cushion-shaped, case gives it a squarer outline while keeping a circular screen. It is a visible departure from the cleaner round profile of earlier Galaxy Watches and a closer fit with Samsung’s Ultra design language. Whether it looks better is personal; its practical advantage is more compelling. Reviewers found the standard model comfortable for long stretches, including overnight wear, work and exercise.
That comfort matters more than a cosmetic flourish. A watch that does not bother you at bedtime is easier to keep on for sleep tracking, and overnight wear is also needed to use Samsung’s sleep-apnea feature. The 40mm model is the natural choice for smaller wrists or anyone who wants less bulk. The 44mm is larger but has a materially larger battery and a screen that gives you more room for messages and controls.

The Watch8 uses Samsung’s updated band attachment system. Check band compatibility before assuming straps from an older Galaxy Watch will fit: the connection has changed, so an old band may not attach directly. The standard model also has no physical rotating bezel. If you like the tactile, watch-like way of navigating a menu, that omission is a real difference from the Watch8 Classic, not a software setting.
Display and everyday interaction
The Super AMOLED display is one of the Watch8’s most tangible hardware improvements. Samsung rates peak brightness at up to 3,000 nits and says it is up to 50% brighter than the previous generation. Reviewers praised its sharpness and visibility. The rating is a peak figure, however—not a promise that the screen will remain at that brightness indefinitely or be perfectly readable in every outdoor condition. Still, a bright, clear panel is useful when you glance at a notification during a run or check a workout in daylight.
Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch bring refreshed tiles, a redesigned app experience and Samsung’s Now Bar for glanceable activity information. The interface is familiar enough for existing Galaxy Watch users, while Google Play apps and watch-face options give it broader flexibility than a basic fitness tracker. The larger 44mm screen is more comfortable for reading and tapping, but the 40mm remains usable for short interactions.
Gemini on your wrist
Samsung promotes the Watch8 as the first smartwatch with Gemini built in. The assistant can answer questions, offer suggestions and carry out actions through compatible services and apps. On a watch, the best use cases are short and immediate: asking a quick question, setting a timer or reminder, and using supported music, calendar, workout or navigation functions without reaching for your phone.
Gemini is a meaningful addition to the watch experience, but it is not a reason to assume every request will work offline or without a paired phone. What it can do depends on connectivity, account setup, language, compatible services and the request itself. Treat voice control as a convenient shortcut, not a replacement for a phone or a guarantee that every app action will succeed.

Health and sleep features: useful breadth, with caveats
The Watch8 includes heart-rate monitoring, sleep tracking and coaching, Bedtime Guidance, ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, sleep-apnea risk detection, Energy Score and training metrics. Samsung also highlights Vascular Load, an Antioxidant Index, an AGEs Index and guided running plans. The result is a broad wellness suite, but not every item has the same purpose or evidential weight.
Compatibility warning: Basic Android pairing is not the same as full feature access. Samsung Health Monitor features such as ECG and sleep-apnea monitoring require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, and some newer Samsung health and AI-linked features may also be unavailable on other Android phones. Requirements can depend on device, software and region. Check Samsung’s Watch8 compatibility notes and the current Samsung Health Monitor support page before buying if a particular feature is essential.
Established tracking versus newer wellness scores
Sleep duration, heart rate and exercise records can help you notice patterns, especially when the watch is worn consistently. Samsung’s sleep coaching and Bedtime Guidance turn some of that data into suggestions. These are still prompts to help shape habits, not a clinical assessment of sleep quality.
The newer metrics need more restraint. Vascular Load is presented as an estimate of overnight circulatory stress. Antioxidant Index uses a rear-sensor reading taken by placing your thumb on the watch for about five seconds to estimate carotenoid levels. Samsung presents it as a wellness and dietary insight. Neither should be read as a diagnosis, a measurement of overall health or a validated prediction of disease. A score may encourage healthier habits, but its usefulness depends on whether it gives you a clear, repeatable action—not simply another number to check.
Samsung also describes an AGEs Index and Energy Score. These can add context to the health dashboard, but the watch’s algorithmic interpretations are not the same as direct medical measurements. Do not make treatment decisions based on a wellness score.

Sleep-apnea screening
Samsung says the watch can detect signs associated with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea by analyzing overnight oxygen-saturation patterns. Setup requires wearing the watch while asleep for at least two nights, and the feature requires a compatible Galaxy phone and supported region. It is a screening aid, not a diagnosis, and it cannot rule out every case. If you have symptoms or concerns, consult a healthcare professional; if you already have a diagnosis, follow your clinician’s advice rather than relying on the watch. See Samsung’s sleep-apnea instructions for use.
ECG, irregular rhythm and blood pressure
Samsung Health Monitor can record ECG data and offer irregular-heart-rhythm notifications where supported. These functions have age, region, phone and software requirements, and Samsung says the app is not intended to diagnose or treat disease. In the US, the Samsung Health Monitor support material describes blood-pressure setup, while another Samsung troubleshooting page says the feature is unavailable in the United States. That inconsistency means availability should not be assumed. Blood-pressure monitoring is region- and software-dependent, requires a separate upper-arm cuff for calibration and recalibration every 28 days, and is not a medical diagnosis. Confirm current availability in the app before buying for this feature.

For walks, gym sessions, general runs and everyday activity, the Watch8 has the range most smartwatch buyers expect: workout tracking, heart-rate readings, automatic activity detection and Samsung’s running plans and coaching. Samsung also lists dual-frequency GPS and sport-specific metrics such as cycling FTP and swimming SWOLF. The heart-rate tracking has received positive review feedback during demanding workouts.
That does not make it a dedicated sports watch. Wareable found GPS performance weaker than that of specialist sports watches in its testing. If you routinely run in dense urban streets or under tree cover, or need dependable route navigation, detailed recovery analysis and long GPS sessions, a purpose-built sports watch is the safer category to consider. The Watch8 is better suited to general fitness and smartphone convenience than to athletes who treat GPS data as a training instrument.
Battery use during a workout depends on case size, GPS time, screen settings and other sensors. LTE, an always-on display and frequent assistant use can add further drain. The Watch8’s coaching may help casual runners follow a plan, but its value is personal: it is not a substitute for a dedicated coach or a specialized training platform.

Battery life: still the main drawback
The standard Watch8 has a 325mAh battery in the 40mm case and a 435mAh battery in the 44mm case. That difference is one reason not to assume the smaller model will last as long as the larger one. Reviewers generally found only a modest real-world improvement over the Watch7. Wareable reported roughly a day and a half from the smaller model in its testing, while Android Authority said the watch required more battery management than ideal. Those are reviewer observations, not a guarantee for every user.
Always-on display, LTE, GPS workouts, sleep tracking, continuous health monitoring, notifications, brightness and voice-assistant use all influence endurance. A 44mm Bluetooth watch with modest use may last longer than a 40mm LTE watch used heavily, but the available evidence does not support promising a universal two-day result. If you track a late workout and then want a full night of sleep data, charging habits matter: a short top-up before bed may be part of your routine.
Practical choice: get the 44mm if it fits comfortably and you want the more forgiving battery capacity. Get the 40mm if fit and lightness are decisive, accepting that charging will be more noticeable. If charging every day or nearly every day is a deal-breaker, the Watch8 is not the right pick.
Which Galaxy Watch should you buy?
| Model | Best for | Trade-off | US MSRP listed June 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch8 40mm Bluetooth | Smaller wrists and buyers prioritizing a light, compact watch | 325mAh battery; less screen and battery capacity | $349.99 |
| Galaxy Watch8 44mm Bluetooth | Most Samsung-phone owners; larger screen and 435mAh battery | More noticeable on a small wrist; still requires frequent charging | $379.99 |
| Galaxy Watch8 LTE | People who need calls, messages or connectivity away from the phone | $50 more than the equivalent Bluetooth model, carrier plan required, and LTE can use more battery | $399.99 (40mm); $429.99 (44mm) |
| Galaxy Watch8 Classic | Those who want a physical rotating bezel and a more traditional, substantial design | 46mm case, heavier feel and higher price; not a radically different software experience | $499.99 Bluetooth; $549.99 LTE |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra | Outdoor-focused buyers who need rugged construction, larger battery and 10ATM water resistance | Large and costly for everyday use; US MSRP $649.99 | $649.99 |
| Galaxy Watch7 | Value shoppers who want Samsung Health and Wear OS at a lower listed MSRP | Misses Watch8’s comfort redesign, Gemini and newer wellness features | $249.99 (40mm Bluetooth); $279.99 (44mm Bluetooth) |
Prices above are Samsung’s suggested US prices in its June 2026 price sheet; retailer prices and availability vary. The Classic is a choice about the bezel, styling and case size more than an entirely different generation of software. The Ultra is the more appropriate Samsung model for people who specifically need a tougher outdoor watch, but most everyday users do not need to pay for its larger, rugged design.
Compatibility: check this before you buy
The Watch8 requires an Android phone. Samsung lists basic smartphone compatibility from Android 8.0, but several headline features have stricter requirements. ECG, sleep-apnea monitoring and other Samsung Health Monitor functions depend on a compatible Galaxy phone, supported software and region; current Health Monitor support specifies Android 12 or later for compatible Wear OS watches. Some newer Samsung health or AI-linked features may also be limited on non-Samsung Android devices.
That difference matters more than the broad “Android compatible” label. If you have a non-Samsung Android phone and only want notifications, apps and general fitness tracking, the Watch8 may still suit you—but do not buy it expecting every Samsung health feature. iPhone users should not buy it expecting Apple Watch-style support. Review the Samsung Health Monitor requirements and the device’s regional feature list before purchase.
Final verdict
The Galaxy Watch8 earns “Samsung’s best smartwatch in years” when that means the best-balanced standard Galaxy Watch for everyday Android use. Its comfort redesign is meaningful, the AMOLED display is excellent, software feels polished, and Gemini makes voice interactions more capable. Its health and sleep suite is broad, provided you understand which features require a Galaxy phone and that newer scores are wellness estimates rather than diagnoses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIt is not a universal best smartwatch. Battery life remains moderate, GPS does not displace a specialist sports watch, and the 40mm model makes the endurance compromise clearest. For most Samsung users who want a watch for daily life, the 44mm Bluetooth Watch8 is the sensible pick. Watch7 owners should upgrade only if comfort, Gemini or the newer wellness features matter enough to justify the price difference.
