The Galaxy Watch Active2 was a strong compact Samsung smartwatch in 2021: Wareable praised its comfortable design, AMOLED display, digital bezel and everyday tracking, while noting weak workout-history tools and roughly two-day battery life. That is a historical verdict, not a current-generation recommendation. In 2026, consider one only at a low used price, after checking battery condition, phone compatibility and whether Samsung Health Monitor features are available where you live.

What this review tells you today

Wareable first published its review in October 2019 and substantially updated it on March 10, 2021. Its hands-on observations below describe the watch as tested then; they do not establish the condition of used watches, current retail availability or continuing support for every Tizen app and service. The Active2 runs Samsung’s older Tizen platform, not the Wear OS-based software used by current Galaxy Watches. Wareable’s updated review

The review found a capable general-purpose smartwatch and recreational fitness tracker, especially for Samsung-phone owners who wanted a slim circular design. Its sports-data presentation and battery life were less convincing, and those drawbacks matter more when weighing a used watch against newer devices.

Design, size and controls

The Active2 came in 40 mm and 44 mm case sizes, with a circular AMOLED touchscreen, sport-oriented silicone strap and a side speaker. Its relatively thin, light profile made it comfortable for daily wear and exercise. The 40 mm option suits smaller wrists or anyone prioritizing a lighter watch; the 44 mm option provides a larger display and a larger battery.

Navigation uses a touch-sensitive, haptic digital bezel around the screen—not a mechanically rotating bezel. It lets you scroll without tapping every small control, though it lacks the tactile precision of a physical bezel. Two side buttons provide physical controls, useful during workouts. Sweat or gloves can still make touchscreen interaction awkward, and display brightness and always-on settings affect endurance.

Wareable singled out the 1.2-inch AMOLED display for its high-contrast presentation. The circular interface works naturally with watch faces, while the bezel makes menus easier to navigate. On a used example, inspect the display and rear sensor glass for damage, test bezel responsiveness, check the strap connection and confirm that the charging puck is included.

Fitness tracking: useful for everyday activity, limited for serious training

Steps, sleep and Samsung Health

The watch tracks steps, estimates calories, sends inactivity reminders and automatically records sleep. In Wareable’s step-count comparison with a Garmin device, the totals generally differed by about 100 steps. Calorie estimates were broadly consistent with the reviewer’s comparisons against Fitbit and Apple Watch testing. These are selected observations, not accuracy guarantees.

Wareable liked the prompts to move but found Samsung Health less intuitive than Fitbit’s companion app and its sleep information less actionable. Using the watch involves Samsung Health for activity data and Galaxy Wearable for managing the device and its settings.

GPS, workouts and swimming

The Active2 has built-in GPS, heart-rate monitoring, swimming support, workout tracking and automatic exercise recognition. Starting a workout and reading live information on the watch was straightforward in Wareable’s test, but finding and interpreting workout history on the watch was harder; the phone app is more useful for reviewing sessions.

In one outdoor run, Wareable’s Active2 recorded about 0.3 miles more than a Garmin Forerunner 945. Swimming distance matched the comparison device despite a longer recorded workout. Automatic rowing recognition worked but added a couple of minutes and captured limited information. These individual tests do not establish how every watch or workout will perform. Choose manual workout tracking when you want a clearly defined session and more useful recorded detail.

The 2021 software additions included VO₂ max and advanced running metrics such as ground-contact balance and vertical oscillation, along with improved sports tracking. Their presence does not make the Active2 equivalent to a dedicated training watch: the reviewer’s broader concerns about workout history and data presentation remain relevant.

Heart-rate results

Wareable found everyday heart-rate readings generally consistent with a Garmin watch. During interval testing against a Polar H10 chest strap, the Active2’s average and maximum readings tended to be about 5 bpm higher, and its wrist sensor responded more slowly during recovery. Wrist readings can also be affected by fit, skin contact, movement, tattoos, sweat and workout intensity. Do not treat them as medical-grade readings or rely on them for precise training-zone work.

ECG and blood pressure: check the conditions before buying

Samsung added ECG and blood-pressure monitoring after the watch launched, but feature availability is conditional. Current Samsung U.S. support documentation says Samsung Health Monitor on the Active2 requires compatible Samsung Galaxy hardware and software; it is not available on non-Samsung Android phones or iPhones in that documentation. Availability also varies by country and software version. Samsung’s current pages do not agree on the minimum Android version: newer Active2 guidance cites Android 12 or later, while older troubleshooting material cites Android 7 or later. Check Samsung’s current device-specific support page for your phone and region rather than relying on the older minimum. Setting up an ECG

  1. Pair the Active2 with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone through Galaxy Wearable, then update the watch and Galaxy Wearable software.
  2. Install or update Samsung Health Monitor through Samsung’s supported app channel and complete its phone-app onboarding.
  3. On the watch, open Samsung Health Monitor and choose ECG.
  4. Sit still with your forearms resting, then lightly place a finger on the watch’s top button for about 30 seconds.
  5. Review the result and recording history in the phone app; Samsung says a PDF report can be generated there.

The app may be missing if the watch software is too old or the feature is unavailable in your country. Movement, poor contact, a dirty sensor, cold or dry skin, tattoos, hair or an unsuitable fit can also produce a poor-quality reading. ECG is a monitoring feature, not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical evaluation. Samsung Health Monitor instructions for use

Blood-pressure monitoring needs a cuff

The Active2’s blood-pressure feature must be calibrated using a separate upper-arm blood-pressure cuff, sold separately. Samsung describes the watch as a way to monitor changes, not as a replacement for conventional measurement or clinical care. Calibration and readings require you to remain still, and Samsung’s instructions determine when calibration should be repeated. Samsung Health Monitor feature information

Wareable reported readings within about 1–2 points of its comparison cuff during its own test. That is one reviewer’s comparison, not a clinical validation or a promise of results for other users. Do not use watch readings in place of a validated cuff or a clinician’s advice.

Notifications, apps and the Tizen trade-off

The Active2 handles phone notifications and replies, music controls, watch faces, downloadable apps, payment support and calls through its speaker. LTE versions can communicate without the phone nearby only when cellular service is active and the carrier supports the model. Bluetooth versions depend more directly on a phone connection; messaging behavior can vary by carrier, model and software. Samsung guidance for messages on Galaxy watches

Wareable found the app selection less comprehensive than Apple’s ecosystem, with some watch apps paid, and Samsung Health less intuitive than Fitbit’s app. Bixby handled simple requests better than complex conversational ones. In 2026, the important caveat is that no guarantee follows from the watch’s original app support: current Samsung documentation establishes certain Health Monitor conditions, not the ongoing availability of every historic Tizen app, watch face, payment function or service.

Battery life and charging

The 40 mm model has a 247 mAh battery and the 44 mm model a 340 mAh battery. Wareable’s 40 mm test unit lasted at most about two days, with power-saving mode needed to reach the upper end; the reviewer considered three to four days unrealistic with workout tracking, bright display settings and the full smartwatch feature set enabled. Charging from empty to full took about 1.5–2 hours in that test. Wareable’s battery test and review

Those results came from the original review unit, not a six- or seven-year-old used watch. Lithium-ion battery capacity declines with age, so the battery condition of an individual second-hand Active2 is a separate risk and may mean substantially shorter use between charges.

Should you buy a Galaxy Watch Active2 used in 2026?

It makes sense only if its low price compensates for older software, uncertain battery health and limited support certainty. Before buying, check the specific device rather than assuming its original specifications describe its present condition.

  • Phone: Do you have a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone? If ECG or blood-pressure monitoring is the reason for buying, confirm that Samsung Health Monitor supports your exact phone, watch software and country.
  • Battery: Ask the seller about real-world time between charges and, if possible, test it. Do not assume a used unit will match Wareable’s roughly two-day result.
  • Condition and accessories: Inspect the AMOLED display and sensor glass, test the digital bezel and buttons, and verify that the charging puck is included.
  • LTE: If it is a cellular model, confirm carrier compatibility and whether the device can be activated on the service you intend to use.
  • Expectations: Decide whether Tizen’s older software and uncertain continuing availability of apps and services are acceptable. Do not pay a price that assumes current Wear OS capabilities.

Skip it if you use an iPhone; want current Wear OS apps, warranty certainty or several days of battery life; need dependable sports-watch analysis; or expect watch-based blood-pressure measurements to replace a validated cuff. For Samsung-phone owners wanting current Galaxy Watch software and health features, Samsung’s current lineup—including Watch7, Watch8, Watch8 Classic and Galaxy Watch Ultra—is the more direct upgrade path, though prices and feature eligibility vary. Samsung’s current Health Monitor page

For other priorities, choose accordingly: Apple Watch for iPhone users, Garmin for training analysis and battery life, or a Fitbit-style tracker if a simpler health dashboard matters more than the Active2’s circular smartwatch design and notification controls.
