Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Antioxidant Index was first revealed in a Samsung Health leak in June 2025, not in a new 2026 leak. The feature later launched with the Galaxy Watch8 generation and uses the watch’s optical sensor to estimate carotenoid levels in skin in roughly five seconds.

That makes it an interesting wellness tool, but not a blood test, a complete measurement of the body’s antioxidants, or a diagnostic feature. Samsung’s current regional support information also suggests that availability may extend to Galaxy Watch7 and later models, depending on the watch, phone, software version, and market.

What the original Galaxy Watch leak revealed

Contemporary reporting in June 2025 found references to Antioxidant Index inside Samsung Health beta software. The material showed a measurement flow in which the user placed a thumb against the rear sensor of a Galaxy Watch. An on-screen animation and an approximately five-second scan suggested that Samsung was preparing the feature for the Galaxy Watch8 launch cycle.

The discovery came from beta software and APK analysis, so it demonstrated planned functionality rather than a feature already available to every Galaxy Watch owner. SamMobile’s original leak coverage, alongside reporting from 9to5Google and Android Authority, connected the feature with Wear OS 6 and the upcoming Galaxy Watch8 series.

Samsung subsequently made the feature official. Its development material describes Antioxidant Index as a Galaxy Watch8 health feature rather than an unreleased experiment.

What “Antioxidant Index” actually measures

The name is broader than the underlying measurement. Samsung says the feature estimates carotenoid levels in the skin. Carotenoids are pigments found in foods such as fruits and vegetables, and their presence can provide an indication associated with dietary intake.

In practical terms, Samsung Health turns an optical estimate of skin carotenoids into a consumer-facing Antioxidant Index. It does not directly measure every antioxidant in the bloodstream or calculate a laboratory-grade, whole-body antioxidant concentration.

That distinction matters. The watch does not:

  • perform a blood test;
  • measure a person’s complete antioxidant status;
  • diagnose cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or another illness;
  • prove that someone’s overall diet is healthy; or
  • replace clinical nutrition testing or advice from a qualified professional.

A more accurate description is: Galaxy Watch estimates skin carotenoid levels as a quick wellness indicator associated with fruit and vegetable intake.

Samsung’s technical and research explanation discusses the relationship between carotenoids, diet, and the feature’s intended healthy-aging context.

How the five-second scan works

Samsung describes Antioxidant Index as an optical measurement based on reflection spectroscopy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The user places a thumb over the rear sensor on the watch.
  2. The sensor shines light into the skin.
  3. Carotenoid compounds absorb some wavelengths of light and reflect others.
  4. The watch analyzes the reflected signal.
  5. Samsung Health presents an index score and related guidance.

The process takes about five seconds according to Samsung. It is therefore an estimate derived from optical signals, not a direct chemical assay. Factors such as sensor contact, movement, positioning, and the exact measurement conditions may affect whether a scan succeeds or how repeatable it is.

Users should follow the instructions shown by Samsung Health, keep the watch steady, and make sure the thumb fully covers the relevant sensor area. If a reading fails, the likely causes include poor contact, movement, incorrect positioning, an unsupported watch, or a software and device-compatibility issue.

What does the Antioxidant Index score mean?

Samsung’s U.S. Galaxy Watch8 product page illustrates the feature with a numerical score of 92 and the qualitative label “Adequate.” The interface also offers an option to measure again.

That example should not be treated as a universal clinical threshold. Samsung’s consumer presentation shows how the result is displayed, but the number is not evidence that a particular score diagnoses a deficiency or guarantees good health. Its meaning is limited to Samsung’s index and the guidance attached to it in Samsung Health.

The useful question is not whether a single score looks precise. It is whether repeated readings, taken under reasonably similar conditions, help a user pay more attention to diet without creating false reassurance or unnecessary concern.

What advice does Samsung Health provide?

Samsung positions Antioxidant Index as part of a lifestyle-guidance system. Samsung’s examples include suggestions such as eating another tomato or adding pumpkin. These prompts are intended to encourage greater intake of carotenoid-containing foods and other produce.

It is important to separate three different things:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Measurement: an optical estimate of skin carotenoids.
  • Interpretation: Samsung’s score and descriptive label.
  • Recommendation: general food-related suggestions in Samsung Health.

The recommendation is not the same as a personalized prescription from a registered dietitian. If you suspect a nutritional deficiency, have a medical condition, or need a therapeutic diet, professional advice and appropriate clinical testing are more suitable.

Which Galaxy Watches support Antioxidant Index?

Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic are the clearest compatibility cases. Samsung launched and marketed Antioxidant Index with the Watch8 generation.

Current compatibility is more complicated. Samsung’s U.K. Samsung Health page lists Antioxidant Index support for Galaxy Watch7 and later released Galaxy Watch models. That is a regional support statement, not proof that every Watch7, Watch Ultra, or newer model has the feature in every country.

Samsung’s U.S. Watch8 page emphasizes Watch8, while its U.K. Samsung Health information gives a broader Watch7-and-later listing. The difference means buyers should check the support information for their own country and exact model.

Availability can depend on:

  • the specific Galaxy Watch model and variant;
  • watch firmware;
  • Samsung Health version;
  • the connected Android phone;
  • Samsung account and device synchronization; and
  • regional rollout or feature restrictions.

Samsung’s U.K. requirements page lists an Android phone running Android 10 or later and Samsung Health version 6.30.2 or later for the relevant support information. Requirements can vary by feature and region, so those figures should not automatically be applied to every Samsung Health function.

Check Samsung’s regional Samsung Health compatibility information before assuming that the feature works on a particular watch.

What to do if the feature is missing

If Antioxidant Index does not appear, work through the official compatibility path rather than installing unofficial APKs or relying on Activity Launcher workarounds:

  1. Confirm that the exact watch model is listed as supported in your region.
  2. Update Samsung Health from the official app store.
  3. Update the watch firmware and restart both the watch and phone.
  4. Check that the watch is properly connected to the Samsung Health account.
  5. Confirm that the connected phone meets the regional Android requirement.
  6. Look for Antioxidant Index under the relevant Samsung Health health or nutrition sections.

A feature can appear in a Samsung Health interface while remaining disabled for an unsupported connected watch. Confusion with Samsung’s AGEs Index, Energy Score, Food Tracker, Sleep Score, or other health tools is also possible.

Is Samsung’s “first smartwatch” claim independently proven?

Samsung calls Antioxidant Index the first smartwatch feature to measure antioxidant levels. That wording should remain attributed to Samsung. The underlying feature estimates skin carotenoids, and the broader “first” claim is a company marketing statement rather than an independently established scientific ranking.

The same caution applies to words such as “accurate,” “clinically validated,” and “measures the body’s antioxidant status.” The supplied Samsung material explains the technology and its intended use, but it does not establish that the score can diagnose disease or nutritional deficiency.

How useful is it in real life?

Antioxidant Index may be useful as a fast, repeatable prompt. It requires no food logging, uses hardware already built into a supported watch, and may encourage users to eat more fruits and vegetables. For someone who already uses Samsung Health, that convenience could make the feature more actionable than a nutrition reminder that is easy to ignore.

Its limitations are just as important:

  • A skin-carotenoid estimate is not the same as an assessment of overall diet quality.
  • A single result should not be interpreted as a diagnosis.
  • A changing score does not automatically identify the cause of the change.
  • The public material does not establish that the feature detects deficiencies or illness.
  • The result’s value depends on whether it produces sustained behavior change.

Users should be especially cautious about drawing conclusions from small changes between readings. If diet, routine, measurement conditions, and device software have not changed, a different number does not necessarily represent a meaningful health change.

How it fits into Samsung Health

Antioxidant Index is one part of Samsung’s broader Samsung Health ecosystem, which also includes tools such as Energy Score, AGEs Index, Food Tracker, Sleep Score, sleep guidance, Vascular Load, Running Coach, and other cardiovascular and metabolic-health insights.

These features are not interchangeable, and they should not all be treated as clinical measurements. Samsung’s broader categories include areas such as Sleep, Activity, Nutrition, Mindfulness, and Vitals. Antioxidant Index belongs primarily in the nutrition and wellness part of that ecosystem.

Samsung Health overview.

Should you buy a Galaxy Watch for Antioxidant Index?

Reader Recommendation
Existing compatible Galaxy Watch owner Check Samsung Health and watch updates before considering an upgrade.
Galaxy Watch7 owner Verify support for your country, exact model, phone, and software; do not rely on another region’s page.
New Samsung Health user It can be a useful wellness prompt, but it is not by itself a medical reason to buy a watch.
iPhone user Likely a poor fit if Android and Samsung Health requirements prevent full use.
User seeking clinical nutrition information Choose professional assessment, appropriate testing, or dietitian guidance instead.

The strongest buying advice is not to purchase a new watch solely because it displays an antioxidant score. If Samsung confirms support for your existing Galaxy Watch, that is likely the better-value route. Consider a Watch8 or later when you also want its broader hardware and software features and regularly use Samsung Health.

Bottom line

The Antioxidant Index was a notable 2025 Galaxy Watch leak, but it is now a launched Samsung Health feature rather than a newly discovered unreleased capability. It uses a roughly five-second optical scan of the thumb to estimate skin carotenoid levels and turn them into a wellness score.

That may be useful for encouraging healthier food choices. It is not a blood test, a complete antioxidant measurement, or a diagnostic tool.
