Samsung’s original Galaxy Watch Ultra launched in the U.S. at $649.99 in July 2024. It earned the “monster” label in concrete ways: a large 47mm case, a 590mAh battery, rugged construction, dual-frequency GPS and dedicated outdoor controls. But it is also heavy, expensive and not the newest Ultra in 2026. Whether it is worth buying depends on your wrist, phone and workout habits—not just its spec sheet.
What Samsung announced—and what $649.99 meant
Samsung announced the first Galaxy Watch Ultra on July 10, 2024, with U.S. availability beginning July 24. Its original U.S. list price was $649.99 before tax. That is the launch MSRP, not a promise about today’s street price: discounts, trade-in offers and stock vary. Samsung’s U.S. product page has listed the model from $649.99 before trade-in. Check the price for the specific edition and offer before buying.
The 2024 model was a 47mm LTE-capable smartwatch. LTE hardware does not include cellular service: using mobile connectivity away from your phone may require a compatible carrier and a paid wearable plan. Confirm both model support and monthly charges with your carrier.
Keep the generations straight. Samsung retained the $649.99 MSRP for a 2025 refresh that added Titanium Blue and increased storage, according to its product and pricing materials. By 2026, a later Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 was being reported at $699.99 in the U.S. The original Ultra and 2025 refresh should not be described as the newest generation. Why it is a physical monster
The original watch measures 47.1 × 47.4 × 12.1mm and weighs 60.5g for the watch head alone; the band adds weight. Its 1.5-inch, 480 × 480 Super AMOLED display is large and rated by Samsung at up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. The body is substantially bigger and thicker than a standard Galaxy Watch, which makes the display and controls easier to see and use outdoors—but can make the watch feel unwieldy.
That trade-off matters in daily life. A 47mm case may overhang a smaller wrist, catch on sleeves or feel cumbersome in bed. If you plan to wear it overnight for sleep tracking, try it on first if possible. “Bigger” is a useful feature for some outdoor users and a deal-breaker for others.
Rugged materials, with limits
Samsung specifies a Titanium Grade 4 frame and sapphire crystal cover. It also lists 10ATM water resistance, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H durability, plus operation from -4°F to 131°F and altitude resistance up to 29,527 feet. These are substantial durability claims, but they do not make the watch damage-proof. MIL-STD-810H is a testing-standard claim, not a guarantee that every unit will survive every impact or environment. “Titanium frame” also does not mean the entire watch is solid titanium.

10ATM and IP68 are not a substitute for professional dive certification or a dedicated dive computer. Water resistance can be affected by age, impact and exposure to salt water, hot tubs, chemicals or high-pressure water. Follow Samsung’s care guidance and do not assume that a rating makes every water activity safe for the watch.
Battery: a big capacity, not four guaranteed days
The original model has a 590mAh typical-capacity battery. Samsung rates it for up to 100 hours in Power Saving Mode and up to 48 hours in Exercise Power Saving Mode. Those are mode-specific maximum claims, not ordinary-use promises. Always-on display, LTE, GPS workouts, frequent notifications, health sensing and sleep tracking all affect runtime. Consider your own mix of features rather than treating 100 hours as typical use.
Inside, the 2024 version uses Samsung’s five-core, 3nm Exynos W1000 with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage. The 2025 refresh added storage, so check the exact generation and configuration when comparing listings. The Ultra’s larger battery and outdoor hardware are meaningful upgrades over an everyday watch, but they do not eliminate the need to charge it.

Outdoor and training features
Dual-frequency L1 + L5 GPS is designed to help with location tracking in challenging environments. It is not a guarantee of perfect tracks: buildings, trees, mountains and obstructed signals can still affect accuracy. The Quick Button can be assigned to functions such as starting workouts, and the watch supports multi-sport and triathlon tracking. Samsung also highlights an Emergency Siren, personalized heart-rate zones, cycling FTP and Night Mode.

These tools make the Ultra more than a larger notification screen, especially for runners, cyclists, hikers and swimmers who want workout controls close at hand. Still, the right comparison depends on what you need: someone focused on long GPS sessions, mapping and training or recovery workflows may prefer a sports-first Garmin, while the Galaxy Watch offers a more Samsung-centered smartwatch experience.
Health, smart features and compatibility
The Ultra combines Samsung Health and sensor-based wellness features, including sleep and heart metrics and Energy Score. Treat these as consumer health insights, not medical diagnoses or emergency monitoring. Which features are available can vary by country, regulatory approval, phone and software version.

The watch is a natural fit with a Samsung Galaxy phone, but buyers using another Android phone should verify feature support before purchase. Basic pairing and the fuller Samsung feature set are not necessarily the same thing; some health features may require a Galaxy phone or vary by region. The Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health apps are part of the setup, and LTE also depends on carrier compatibility. The 2024 launch model ran Wear OS 5; software can change after launch. The evidence here does not establish current iPhone support, so iPhone owners should confirm compatibility directly before considering it.
Who should buy it?
- Choose the Ultra if you use Android—especially a Samsung phone—have a medium-to-large wrist, and want a bright, rugged watch for frequent outdoor training, swimming or LTE use away from your phone.
- Consider a standard Galaxy Watch if your priorities are notifications, payments, sleep tracking and casual exercise. A smaller, lighter model may be more comfortable and costs less if you will not use the Ultra’s battery, GPS, durability or Quick Button advantages.
- Look at Garmin if multi-day sports battery life, mapping and training tools outweigh Samsung apps and smartwatch features.
- Choose by phone ecosystem for the other options: Apple Watch Ultra is aimed at iPhone users; Pixel Watch suits buyers who prefer a Google- and Fitbit-centered Android experience and a less rugged design.
Is $649.99 still a sensible price?
For the original 2024 Ultra, the answer in 2026 depends on its actual selling price and your tolerance for the older generation. Compare the listing with the newer Ultra 2—not just the launch MSRP—and check whether a discount or trade-in makes the older model compelling. The 2025 refresh keeps the same stated MSRP while adding a color and storage, so verify which version a seller is offering. Promotions, trade-in values and availability change; the $649.99 figure alone does not tell you whether a deal is good.
Also account for possible LTE service charges. Do not add the price of a carrier plan, replacement band or protection plan unless you need it, but do not mistake LTE capability for included service. A sale on the older Ultra can make sense for a buyer who wants its size and outdoor features; if you want the newest generation, compare the Ultra 2 directly instead.

Verdict
The “monster” description is fair shorthand for the original Galaxy Watch Ultra’s size, battery capacity, rugged ratings and outdoor toolkit. It is not proof that the watch is indestructible, universally better than rivals or guaranteed to last four days in normal use. It makes the most sense for outdoor-minded Android users who want maximum Galaxy Watch hardware and can live with a heavy case. For casual use, small wrists or an iPhone, the price and bulk are hard to justify.
Samsung’s 2024 announcement documents the original model, and Samsung’s current U.S. product page lists product information and offers. For the later generation, TechRadar’s Ultra 2 coverage reports a $699.99 U.S. price; treat that as reported pricing, not the original Ultra’s MSRP.
