The Galaxy Watch5 Pro supports Google Assistant on Wear OS, but the app name and availability can vary: some watches may now show Gemini instead. Start by opening the assistant app manually, then check setup, your Google account and internet connection before changing hotword settings or resetting the watch.
First, identify what is failing
There are three different problems that can look like “Assistant isn’t working”: the app is missing, the app opens but cannot complete a request, or manual use works while “Hey Google” does not. Test the app from the watch’s app menu first; that separates a connection or setup problem from hotword detection.
The Watch5 Pro runs Wear OS, and Samsung lists Google Assistant among the assistant options for supported Galaxy watches. Google documents Assistant on selected Wear OS 3.0-or-later watches. Support still depends on watch software, account, country, language and network access. Samsung’s Wear OS Galaxy Watch guidance, Samsung’s Assistant instructions and Google’s wearable assistant requirements describe the current conditions.
Why your watch may show Gemini
Google’s current wearable guidance refers to Gemini as well as Google Assistant. Gemini is offered on selected Wear OS 4.0-or-later watches, subject to availability and rollout; that does not establish that every Watch5 Pro has Gemini. Check the app actually offered in your watch’s Play Store rather than assuming Assistant has been universally replaced. Some Assistant voice features may not be available through Gemini. Google’s Gemini on Wear OS announcement and the Google Play listing provide the current context.

Check the phone, account and connection prerequisites
- Android phone: Watch5-series setup requires a compatible Android phone through the Galaxy Wearable app. These watches cannot be set up with an iPhone. Samsung’s cited compatibility guidance specifies Android 6.0 or higher, at least 1.5 GB of RAM and Google Mobile Services; current app support or full functionality may require newer software. See Samsung’s compatibility guidance.
- Google account: Make sure a Google account is added to the watch. Assistant setup and services can fail if the account is missing or not fully connected.
- Internet access: Assistant needs internet access, provided through the paired phone or, on an LTE model, an available LTE connection or Wi-Fi. LTE does not guarantee every feature will work. Google’s requirements explain connectivity and feature availability.
- Language and region: Assistant features and devices are not available in every country or language. Google lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese for certain Wear OS voice actions and messaging; this is not a promise that every assistant feature supports all of them. Check Google’s language information for voice actions.
A Samsung phone is not mandatory: Samsung’s compatibility guidance covers compatible Android phones with Google Mobile Services. If an assistant app is absent from Play Store, check the account country, phone and watch language, and software eligibility before concluding that the watch is incompatible.
Install or update the available assistant app
- Wake the watch and open the app menu.
- Open Play Store.
- Search for Gemini or Google Assistant.
- Install the available app, or tap Update if it is already installed.
- Return to the app menu and open the assistant.
The listing name can differ with software version, country, account and rollout. Samsung and Google both direct users to install the available assistant from the watch’s Play Store. Samsung’s install steps and Google’s setup guidance cover this route.
Finish setup if it says “Continue on phone”
- Check that the watch is connected in the Galaxy Wearable app on your Android phone.
- Confirm that the Google account you intend to use is present on the watch.
- Start the setup by opening the assistant app on the watch, then follow the prompt to continue on the phone.
- Complete any consent or setup screens on the phone, return to the watch and test a request manually.
- If the phone prompt never appears or setup remains stuck, update Galaxy Wearable, the Google app, the assistant app and watch software, then retry.
The Watch5 series is set up through Galaxy Wearable, not the older generic Wear OS phone app. Updating everything before considering a repair or reset is a low-risk troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for a particular setup failure. Samsung explains Watch5 phone compatibility and setup.

Test the assistant manually before “Hey Google”
Open Gemini or Assistant from the app menu, or use the watch’s designated shortcut if it is configured. Ask a simple question such as “What’s the weather?” Google uses this as a basic response test. If the watch answers, the assistant service is working and the remaining problem is likely hotword detection or its shortcut—not a total assistant failure. Google’s Wear OS troubleshooting guide includes the weather test.
If manual activation also fails, check connection, account, app and availability before suspecting the microphone. If voice input fails in other watch apps too, hardware support becomes more relevant.
Fix “Hey Google” detection
If manual activation works but the wake phrase does not, check the detection setting. On the watch, swipe down from the face, then open Settings → Google → Digital Assistant and enable Hey Google Detection. Menu names may vary by software version. Test the app or button route again if the setting is on; that helps distinguish hotword detection from assistant connectivity. Google documents this setting path.

Hands-free activation is convenient, but a manual launch is a useful diagnostic alternative and avoids accidental activations. If the assistant itself works manually, do not reset the watch solely because the wake phrase fails.

Resolve “Can’t connect” or unanswered requests
- Keep the watch near the paired phone and confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- On the watch, open quick settings, turn Airplane mode on, wait several seconds, then turn it off.
- Use Find My Phone from the watch. If the phone rings, the Bluetooth connection is working.
- Check that the phone or watch has internet access, then retry a simple request.
- Restart both devices if the connection still fails.
Google recommends checking the phone connection and watch Google account, toggling Airplane mode, and using Find My Phone to verify connectivity. If Bluetooth pairing itself will not recover, re-pair through Galaxy Wearable only after these checks. Google’s connection troubleshooting steps provide further guidance.
Bluetooth versus LTE
A Bluetooth Watch5 Pro normally relies on its paired phone for internet-based requests. An LTE model may connect away from the phone if its service or Wi-Fi is available, but some assistant functions may still be unavailable over LTE. A watch that opens the assistant without a working internet route may be unable to process commands.

When only messages fail
If questions work but sending a message does not, treat this as a messaging integration problem rather than a complete Assistant failure. Confirm that the watch is paired and connected, the assistant is set up, and the phone’s messaging app is signed in, updated and able to send a message directly. Check that the intended contact uses the relevant service, then test a normal text message before trying WhatsApp or another app.
Google says Gemini can send WhatsApp or text messages, with messaging dependent on the paired Android device and installed messaging app. A service-specific failure may therefore persist even when ordinary questions work. See Google’s Wear OS troubleshooting information.

If the button shortcut does not open the assistant
First confirm the assistant launches from the app menu. Then check the watch’s button or key-customisation settings and assign the preferred shortcut if available. Button behaviour differs across One UI Watch software versions, so a single long-press instruction is not universal. Google documents designated-button activation for Wear OS, while Samsung’s watch instructions also support launching the assistant from the app list. Google’s voice-action guidance and Samsung’s Assistant instructions describe these options.
Escalate from updates to re-pairing, then reset only as a last resort
- Low risk: Update watch software, Galaxy Wearable, the assistant app and relevant Google apps; verify the account and internet connection; toggle Airplane mode; restart the watch and phone.
- Moderate risk: Remove and reinstall the assistant app if available. If the watch will not maintain its phone connection, re-pair it through Galaxy Wearable. Re-pairing requires setup again.
- High impact: Consider a factory reset only if the preceding steps fail. Back up what can be backed up first; a reset removes local watch data and requires the watch to be configured again. Official troubleshooting does not establish a reset as a universal fix for Assistant failures.
Contact Samsung Support if Bluetooth pairing remains unreliable, the microphone also fails in other apps, or the watch is stuck after updated software and re-pairing. For an assistant app or Google-account issue, consult Google’s wearable assistant support page.
Use another assistant only if it suits the task
Bixby is a built-in alternative for some Galaxy Watch tasks; Gemini may be an option if the watch’s software and rollout offer it. A phone-based Assistant or Gemini can handle requests the watch cannot complete, while the watch’s Contacts or messaging app can serve as a voice-free fallback. Samsung lists multiple assistant options, but availability varies by device and feature. Check Samsung’s current assistant guidance.
