Samsung’s “April update” for the Galaxy Watch6 and Galaxy Watch6 Classic was a real firmware release—but it arrived in late April 2025, not 2026. It was primarily a maintenance package focused on stability, reliability, and security, rather than a new Wear OS generation or a major One UI Watch redesign.
Availability was staged by model, country, connection type, and carrier. If you own a Watch6 or Watch6 Classic, you can check for it—or for a newer firmware release—through the Galaxy Wearable app or directly on the watch.
What was the Galaxy Watch6 April update?
Samsung began rolling out the update in late April 2025 to Wear OS-based Galaxy Watch models, including the Galaxy Watch6 and Galaxy Watch6 Classic. Initial reports identified South Korea and the United States, followed by additional regions and model variants in stages. 9to5Google reported on the rollout.
The documented Galaxy Watch6 Classic release for model SM-R950 was published on April 28, 2025. Samsung listed build R950XXU1BYD1 and a March 1, 2025 security patch, with the changelog describing stability, reliability, and security improvements. Samsung’s firmware tracker provides the model-specific entry.

That build should not be treated as universal. Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic variants use different model numbers and firmware, and Samsung says update details can vary by country, carrier, and device.
What changed?
- Improved stability
- Improved reliability
- Security improvements
- A March 1, 2025 security patch on the documented SM-R950 release
Samsung did not describe this package as a major Wear OS upgrade or a feature-heavy One UI Watch release. There is no basis in the official changelog for promising new watch faces, health sensors, Galaxy AI features, battery-life improvements, One UI 7 Watch, or Wear OS 6.
Some secondary reports described downloads of roughly 500 MB or more, but the size varies by model and regional firmware. Do not assume every Watch6 owner received an identically sized package. Android Central reported the approximate package size.

Which Galaxy Watches received it?
The April 2025 rollout covered multiple older Wear OS Galaxy Watch generations. Reporting specifically identified the Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, and Watch6 families, with the Watch6 and Watch6 Classic the most relevant models for this article.
Samsung’s Wear OS lineup includes the Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, and Galaxy Watch Ultra families, among others. Samsung lists its compatible Wear OS Galaxy Watch models here.

The rollout distinction matters:
- Bluetooth/Wi-Fi models: These generally receive Samsung firmware without the same carrier approval process used by cellular watches.
- LTE models: Carrier-specific firmware and testing can delay availability, so an LTE Watch6 may not receive the package at the same time as a Bluetooth model.
- Regional variants: An imported watch may use firmware intended for another market. A U.S. model should not be assumed to share firmware with an international variant simply because the hardware name is the same.
Samsung’s rollout was therefore staged. Seeing the update on another person’s Watch6—or on a different model number—does not mean it must already be available for your watch.
How to check for the update
Using an Android phone
- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Tap Watch settings.
- Tap Watch software update.
- Tap Download and install.
- Follow the prompts and let the watch restart.
Depending on the software version, Samsung may place the update control under About watch or About band instead. Samsung’s official update instructions cover the current menu variations.

- Open Settings on the Galaxy Watch.
- Tap General.
- Tap Watch software update.
- Check for the available package and install it.
Keep the watch charged before starting. Samsung’s support guidance says an update requires a good charge and may require approximately 30% battery. The watch can disconnect from the phone during installation and show a progress animation or percentage while it restarts.
How to verify the exact firmware
Before comparing your software with an online report, record:
- The watch model number, such as an SM-R9xx identifier
- The complete software version or build number
- The Android or Wear OS version
- The Android security patch level
- Whether the watch is Bluetooth or LTE
- Your country and, for LTE models, your carrier
Then compare your model with the matching entry in Samsung’s Galaxy Watch6 firmware tracker or the tracker for your exact model.

This example applies to the documented SM-R950 entry. It is not a claim that every Watch6 or Watch6 Classic variant used the same build.
What if the update does not appear?
A missing update does not necessarily indicate a fault. Common explanations include:
- The staged rollout has not reached your model or region.
- Your LTE carrier is following a different approval schedule.
- The watch was imported from another market.
- The Galaxy Wearable app or watch plug-in is outdated.
- The phone and watch are not connected over Bluetooth.
- The watch does not have enough charge.
- Samsung has temporarily paused or staggered distribution.
Try updating Galaxy Wearable through the Google Play Store, restarting both devices, confirming the Bluetooth connection, charging the watch, and checking again later. Samsung’s standard phone-assisted process requires a network connection and a Bluetooth connection between the phone and watch. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide covers connection and update problems.
Do not factory-reset the watch merely because the update has not appeared. A reset erases watch data, and an LTE watch activated with a QR code may need a new QR code to restore cellular service afterward.
Firmware updates are separate from app updates
A watch firmware update is not the same as updating applications. On Wear OS Galaxy Watches, update watch apps through the Play Store on the watch. Updating Galaxy Wearable on the phone is also useful, but it does not replace installing available app updates on the watch.

Keeping apps current can be particularly helpful after a firmware installation, when compatibility fixes or updated versions may be offered separately.
Is this the same as Wear OS 6 or One UI 8 Watch?
No. The April 2025 package was a maintenance and security release. It should not be confused with later major software releases, including later Watch6 firmware based on Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch for supported variants.
Samsung’s firmware history shows that the Watch6 series continued receiving newer releases after the April 2025 package, including entries in 2026. For example, Samsung lists a July 6, 2026 build for the SM-R940 Watch6 variant. Check Samsung’s current model-specific history for later releases.
Likewise, Samsung’s documentation about One UI 6 Watch and its announcement about expanded wearable experiences describe separate software updates, not the April 2025 maintenance package.

If the watch behaves oddly after updating
Do not assume the April package caused or fixed battery drain, lag, or another issue without model-specific evidence. If performance or battery life changes, use this order:

- Update watch apps through the Play Store.
- Restart the watch.
- Check for another firmware or app update.
- Review recently enabled health tracking or other settings.
- Allow a short settling period before judging battery behavior.
Samsung identifies outdated software, third-party apps, and device condition as possible causes of sluggishness or unresponsiveness.
If an update fails or the watch gets stuck
- Keep the watch on a sufficient charge.
- Force-reboot it by holding the Home/Power and Back buttons together until “Rebooting…” appears.
- Reconnect it to Galaxy Wearable and retry the update.
- If it remains unusable, consult Samsung service guidance before resetting it.
A factory reset should be a last resort because it can erase data. LTE watches may also need cellular reactivation after the reset. Samsung provides additional recovery guidance for frozen watches.
Should a Watch6 owner upgrade?
The April 2025 update alone is not a strong reason to replace a Galaxy Watch6. Install it when offered, particularly because it includes stability, reliability, and security improvements, then judge an upgrade separately based on hardware and support needs.

- Keep the Watch6 if its performance, health features, battery, and software support meet your needs.
- Consider a newer Galaxy Watch if you need newer sensors, more recent hardware, or a longer period of future software support. Check Samsung’s current lineup at Samsung’s official watches page.
- Consider a Pixel Watch if you prefer Google’s Wear OS ecosystem, while remembering that it may be a poorer fit for Samsung-exclusive health features and Galaxy integration. See Google’s official watch store.
Current prices, stock, refurbishment status, and support eligibility vary, so they should be checked directly with the manufacturer or carrier rather than inferred from the Watch6’s launch pricing.
