The 2024 Galaxy Watch7 is the better fit for most people: it offers Samsung’s core smartwatch, health and fitness experience in two lighter sizes. The first-generation Galaxy Watch Ultra adds a bigger battery, titanium construction, a physical Quick Button and more outdoor-focused features—but it is much larger and heavier. Both require an Android phone; neither works with an iPhone. They are also older-generation watches in 2026, not Samsung’s newest models.

Both launched on July 10, 2024, with general availability from July 24. They share the Exynos W1000 processor, Wear OS 5 with One UI 6 Watch at launch, Samsung’s BioActive sensor platform and dual-frequency GPS. The Ultra is not a separate software or health ecosystem: most of its premium is for its case, battery, storage, controls and outdoor-oriented features. Samsung’s 2024 product specifications and its US comparison page cover the core specifications.
Prices above are original US list prices, not verified 2026 sale prices. Samsung’s current US pages feature newer Watch generations and a Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025); the current 2025 Ultra listing is not evidence that the original 2024 model is available at the same price. Check the exact model and seller before buying.
What changed in the 2024 generation?
The central upgrades are a new processor generation and dual-frequency GPS. Both watches use Samsung’s five-core, 3nm Exynos W1000 chip, paired with 2GB of RAM. At launch, both ran Wear OS 5 with Samsung’s One UI 6 Watch interface. Reviews found the Watch7 responsive, and the Ultra delivered smooth Wear OS performance; software and feature availability can change with updates.

Both also use Samsung’s BioActive sensor platform, combining optical heart-rate sensing with electrical heart-signal and bioelectrical impedance hardware, alongside sensors for measurements such as blood oxygen and temperature. Having the same broad sensor platform does not guarantee identical results for every wearer or activity: fit, movement, software and sensor contact all matter.
Samsung markets features including Energy Score and wellness suggestions under its Galaxy AI umbrella. They are intended to help interpret wellness data, not diagnose a condition or establish that someone is fit, recovered or ill. Samsung says Galaxy AI features require a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung Health and a Samsung account. Availability also varies by country, phone and software version.

The 40mm version is the more discreet choice for smaller wrists and sleep wear. The 44mm gives you a larger display and battery but is still considerably lighter than the Ultra. The Watch7’s aluminum case is less premium than titanium, but its everyday health and smartwatch platform is largely shared with the more expensive model.

Galaxy Watch Ultra specifications and outdoor features
The original Ultra has a 47mm titanium case, a 1.5-inch sapphire-crystal Super AMOLED display at 480 × 480 pixels, a 590mAh battery and 64GB of storage. It weighs 60.5g and launched in Titanium Gray, Titanium White and Titanium Silver. It is an LTE model, with Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, NFC and dual-frequency GPS.
Its extra physical control is a customizable Quick Button, alongside the Home and Back buttons. Outdoor-oriented features include a multisport workout mode, Race Partner, GPX route importing, an emergency siren and cycling FTP prediction. These additions can make workouts easier to control and support some route and multisport use. They do not turn the Ultra into a dedicated sports watch with the full training, navigation, battery and sensor ecosystem of a specialist Garmin, COROS or Polar device.
Everyday use: the differences that matter
Size and comfort
The Ultra’s 47mm case and 60.5g weight are a substantial trade-off, not a free upgrade. It may feel bulky on a small wrist, move around during sleep, or catch on sleeves. Choose it because you want its battery, materials, controls or outdoor features—not simply because it is the top-priced option. The Watch7’s 40mm and 44mm choices and much lower weights make it easier to wear around the clock.
Battery life
Samsung’s launch figures are up to 40 hours for the Watch7 with the display off and up to 30 hours with always-on display, with actual results depending on model and use. For the Ultra, Samsung claimed up to 60 hours with always-on display, up to 100 hours in Power Saving Mode and up to 48 hours in Exercise Power Saving Mode. The 100-hour figure is not ordinary full-featured use. An independent Ultra review reported roughly three days during its test period with regular GPS workouts, but individual results vary.

Always-on display, LTE, GPS sessions, music streaming, sleep tracking, notifications, brightness and frequent health measurements can all reduce runtime. Battery behavior can also vary during the first days as the watch learns usage. If your Watch7 or Ultra is draining unusually quickly, check these settings and background activity before judging its capacity.
GPS and workout tracking
Both models have L1/L5 dual-frequency GPS, but the presence of two bands does not guarantee a perfect track. Reviews of the Watch7 reported mixed results, including poor tracks in some difficult environments; reviewers found the Ultra’s GPS more convincing in some tests, though no watch is flawless in every location. Buildings, tree cover, route shape, firmware and how securely the watch fits can affect positioning. For casual walks and ordinary workouts, either may be adequate. If race pacing or remote-route tracking is critical, compare multiple sessions with a known-good device before relying on it.
Heart-rate results also depend on activity. Reviews found the Ultra generally strong for some running, walking and indoor-cycling tests, but wrist sensors can struggle with rowing, tight gripping, rapid intervals or a shifting watch. Fit, cold skin and poor sensor contact can also distort readings. Some Watch7 tests found problems during cycling, while other testing found it acceptable for ordinary runs and daily activity. If precise heart-rate data affects training decisions, validate wrist readings against a chest strap.

The Watch7 is rated 5 ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H; the Ultra is rated 10 ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H. Both have sapphire crystal. The Ultra’s titanium case and higher water-resistance rating make it the more outdoor-oriented option, but neither watch is indestructible or suitable for every water sport. Water resistance can be affected by impact, salt water, chemicals, aging seals and misuse. Follow Samsung’s care guidance, and rinse and dry the watch after exposure to residue.

Storage and charging
The Ultra doubles the Watch7’s storage from 32GB to 64GB, useful if you want more room for apps or offline content. Both use Samsung’s magnetic wireless charging system. Samsung’s launch testing used its Watch Magnetic Fast Charging USB-C cable and a Samsung 25W USB-C adapter, sold separately; actual charging times vary. One practical Ultra limitation reported in independent testing is that it cannot use reverse wireless charging from a compatible Galaxy phone, due to the redesigned sensor assembly.
Health features—and their limits
Both watches support heart-rate monitoring, ECG hardware, blood-oxygen measurement, stress and sleep tracking, sleep coaching, body-composition estimates, cycle tracking, automatic workout detection and personalized heart-rate zones. Software features such as Energy Score, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications and sleep-apnea screening may also be offered, but their availability depends on region, phone and software. Some require a Samsung Galaxy phone or Samsung account; confirm support where you live before buying.
These are wellness and screening tools, not substitutes for clinical assessment. In the US, Samsung describes its sleep-apnea feature as an over-the-counter, software-only mobile medical application intended to detect signs of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults aged 22 or older. It requires wearing the device for seven nights within a 30-night period and is not intended for people already diagnosed with sleep apnea. It does not replace diagnosis or treatment by a clinician. ECG and irregular-rhythm features likewise have regional and device requirements; do not treat a watch reading as a diagnosis.

Compatibility, LTE and setup
Neither Watch7 nor Watch Ultra supports iPhone. Samsung says these watches require Android because they rely on Google Play services. Its 2024 specification sheet lists Android 11 or later and more than 1.5GB of phone memory, alongside Google Play requirements and regional/device limitations. See Samsung’s compatibility guidance for current qualifications.
Best Value
- Next-Generation 3nm Processor: Exynos W1000 chipset delivers significantly faster performance and smoother app navigation.
Setup uses the Galaxy Wearable app for pairing, settings, updates and watch apps, plus Samsung Health for activity and wellness data. A non-Samsung Android phone can pair, but that does not mean every Samsung-specific feature will work on it.
Bluetooth/Wi-Fi is right for most people who carry their phone. LTE lets a watch connect to cellular service away from the phone, but requires a compatible carrier, coverage and a qualifying plan; cellular service is not free. Standalone calling and messaging require initial pairing with an eligible Android phone and carrier activation. Choose LTE if you regularly leave your phone behind and the recurring fee is worthwhile; otherwise, Bluetooth is generally the better value.
If pairing or a feature fails
- Update Android, Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health and the watch software; check phone compatibility and Google Play services.
- If moving to another phone, remove stale Bluetooth pairings, confirm the watch is not still linked to the previous phone, and back up Samsung Health data before resetting or transferring.
- For missing health tools, check regional availability, phone requirements, Samsung account status and any required wear period.
- For LTE issues, confirm carrier support, the account, eSIM activation and coverage in your region.
Which should you buy in 2026?
Choose the Watch7 for most everyday use
Pick the Watch7 if you want Samsung notifications, apps, sleep tracking, health features and casual workout tracking without the Ultra’s size and cost. It is the sensible starting point for most buyers, especially anyone who wants a 40mm watch, values lower weight or does not need multi-day endurance. Before purchasing an older-generation model in 2026, compare its actual price with newer Samsung watches: launch MSRP is not a reliable measure of today’s value.
Choose the original Ultra for battery and outdoor hardware
The 2024 Ultra makes sense if you specifically want a much larger battery, titanium, a customizable workout button, multisport and GPX features, and a tougher outdoor-oriented design—and are comfortable wearing a heavy 47mm watch. Its value depends on the actual price and condition. Samsung’s current US buying page for the Ultra points to the 2025 model, so verify that a listing is for the original 2024 Ultra before comparing specifications or buying.
Choose neither if your priorities point elsewhere
For an iPhone, consider an Apple Watch instead. For long battery life, deeper training analytics, navigation or an endurance-first sports ecosystem, compare Garmin, COROS or Polar. A Pixel Watch may suit Android users who prioritize Google integration. These alternatives differ in phone compatibility, training depth, battery and ecosystem; compare those needs rather than headline specifications alone. Neither Samsung model is a good fit if you expect medical diagnosis, week-long everyday battery life, or a small and lightweight watch in the Ultra’s size.
Bottom line
The Watch7 gives most buyers the core Samsung experience in a lighter, more flexible package; the Ultra is worth considering for its battery and outdoor hardware, not because it has a wholly different health platform. Check Android compatibility, feature availability and the exact 2024 model before buying—especially when a current listing or comparison page may refer to newer hardware.
