Samsung’s Antioxidant Index is a wellness estimate of carotenoid levels in your skin—not a blood test for “antioxidants.” On supported Galaxy Watch models, the rear BioActive sensor shines several wavelengths of light onto a fingertip and analyzes the reflected light. The watch then displays a score from 0 to 100 and a category such as Very low, Low, or Adequate.

Samsung presents carotenoids as a useful proxy for fruit and vegetable intake. However, the feature does not measure every antioxidant in the body, total antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress, vitamin deficiency, or disease risk. Treat it as a simple, longer-term nutrition habit and trend tool.

What is the Galaxy Watch8 Antioxidant Index?

The Antioxidant Index is a Samsung Health feature introduced with the Galaxy Watch8 generation. It estimates the concentration of carotenoids in the skin and converts that estimate into a consumer-facing score from 0 to 100.

Carotenoids are pigments found in many yellow, orange, red, and green fruits and vegetables. Because dietary carotenoids can accumulate in the skin, Samsung uses them as an indirect indicator of dietary antioxidant status. That is much narrower than measuring all antioxidants in the body.

Samsung currently describes the feature as a Labs wellness feature. Its availability, interface, supported devices, and behavior can therefore change with software updates and regional rollouts. Samsung’s product pages describe the Watch8 as introducing the feature to smartwatches, but that is Samsung’s product claim rather than an independently audited market-wide finding. See Samsung’s Galaxy Watch8 product information and Samsung Health requirements.

What the score does—and does not—measure

Term Meaning
Carotenoid level The skin signal the sensor is attempting to estimate.
Antioxidant Index Samsung’s 0–100 consumer score derived from that estimate.
Fruit and vegetable intake A factor associated with carotenoid levels, but not a precise food log or the only possible influence on a reading.
Total antioxidant capacity A much broader biological concept that the watch does not measure.
Medical status Not established by the feature.

A score such as 92 may look highly precise, but it does not mean you consumed a precisely calculated amount of produce. Nor does a high score prove that you are healthy, while a low score does not prove a deficiency.

How does the sensor work?

Samsung says the watch uses multi-wavelength absorption spectroscopy. LEDs emit several colors of light onto the skin, while photodiodes analyze the reflected light. Since carotenoids absorb some wavelengths more strongly than others, the optical pattern can be used to estimate their concentration.

You measure with a finger rather than by placing the watch against the wrist. Samsung recommends the thumb. Its engineering explanation says that pressing the thumb against the rear sensor temporarily restricts blood flow, helping reduce interference from hemoglobin and other optical factors. This is Samsung’s explanation of the design; the available product material does not establish independent clinical error margins for everyday use. More technical detail appears in Samsung’s sensor-development explanation.

How to take an Antioxidant Index reading

  1. Open or add the Antioxidant Index tile or widget on the watch.
  2. Tap Measure.
  3. Place the center of your finger on the rear sensor. Samsung recommends the thumb, although its instructions say other fingers can be used.
  4. Hold your finger still for approximately five seconds.
  5. Review the score and category.
  6. Open Samsung Health on the paired phone to view history and related dietary guidance.

For more consistent results

  • Use the same finger—preferably the same thumb—each time.
  • Measure at roughly the same time of day.
  • Keep the finger centered, still, and at a similar pressure.
  • Keep the sensor and finger reasonably clean and dry.
  • Look at trends over days and weeks rather than reacting to one measurement.
  • If a result looks inconsistent, repeat it once under the same conditions instead of taking many readings in succession.

Samsung warns that uneven skin texture can contribute to different repeated measurements. Its regional guidance also recommends consistent timing and finger choice.

What do Very low, Low, and Adequate mean?

Samsung’s published interpretation references the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 400 grams of fruit and vegetables per day. The categories are presented as follows:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Displayed category Samsung’s reference interpretation
Very low Below 50% of the referenced intake.
Low 50% to less than 100% of the referenced intake.
Adequate 100% or more of the referenced intake.

These are Samsung’s consumer categories, not universal medical thresholds. They should not be read as a direct calculation of your meals. Samsung illustrates an Adequate result with a score of 92, but that number is not a clinical target or a precise measure of daily produce intake. See Samsung’s explanation of the carotenoid and score interpretation.

How long does diet take to affect the result?

Do not expect the score to react immediately after one healthy meal. Samsung says carotenoids generally take about two to three weeks to build up in the skin to detectable levels, while another Samsung explanation describes improvements commonly appearing after one to two weeks.

The practical takeaway is to treat that as an approximate trend window, not a guarantee. If you improve your diet, measure consistently for at least a couple of weeks before judging whether the pattern has changed. A single reading—or a rapid change after one meal—does not establish that your diet or health has materially changed.

Why did my score change?

A changing score does not necessarily mean your underlying health changed by the same amount. Possible influences include:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Recent and longer-term fruit and vegetable intake.
  • Alcohol consumption.
  • Stress.
  • Unusually intense exercise.
  • Different measurement times.
  • Finger placement or pressure.
  • Uneven skin texture.
  • Sensor or finger contamination.
  • Optical interference related to skin and blood-flow characteristics.

Samsung says intense exercise, alcohol, and stress can temporarily lower the result, and that the index does not respond like blood glucose. Those factors should be treated as Samsung’s guidance rather than as independently established correction rules for every user.

Is the Antioxidant Index medically accurate?

Important: Antioxidant Index is not a medical test. It does not diagnose antioxidant deficiency, oxidative stress, cancer, inflammation, vitamin deficiency, or any other disease. Do not use it to start supplements, stop treatment, or seek or avoid medical care.

The feature is intended for fitness and wellness use. It estimates a skin carotenoid signal; it does not measure blood antioxidant levels, total antioxidant capacity, or disease risk. Samsung describes development validation using Raman spectroscopy, but the available material does not provide enough independent clinical evidence to establish real-world accuracy or error margins.

If you are concerned about nutrition, symptoms, a possible deficiency, or a medical condition, use a qualified clinician or dietitian rather than this score. Samsung also advises users to consult a medical professional when concerned about their antioxidant level. See the Samsung Health wellness disclaimer.

Which watches support Antioxidant Index?

As of August 18, 2026, Samsung’s published material identifies support for:

  • Galaxy Watch8.
  • Galaxy Watch8 Classic.
  • Galaxy Watch Ultra.
  • Later supported Galaxy Watch models, subject to Samsung’s rollout and regional availability.

Do not assume that Galaxy Watch7 or an earlier model supports the feature merely because it has a similar BioActive sensor. Current Samsung documentation does not describe universal availability on older watches. Support can depend on the country, watch model, software version, phone, and Samsung Health configuration. Samsung’s regional health-feature guide provides additional model information.

Phone and software requirements

Published feature requirements include:

  • Samsung Health version 6.30.2 or later on applicable regional pages.
  • A Samsung account.
  • A compatible Android phone.
  • A supported Galaxy Watch model.
  • A country or region where the feature has been enabled.

Samsung’s regional Samsung Health page lists Android 10 or later for Antioxidant Index, while product pages may state different minimum requirements for the complete Watch8 experience. Android 10 should therefore not be treated as a universal guarantee. Check the requirements shown in Samsung Health and on your local Samsung support page before buying.

Why can’t I find Antioxidant Index?

Try this sequence:

  1. Update Samsung Health on the phone.
  2. Update the watch software and Galaxy Wearable app.
  3. Confirm that the watch model supports the feature.
  4. Check the phone’s regional Android requirement.
  5. Sign in to the Samsung account.
  6. Sync the watch and reopen Samsung Health.
  7. Look under Samsung Health tiles, widgets, or health measurements.
  8. Check Samsung’s regional availability information.
  9. Contact Samsung support if the feature remains unavailable.

Do not assume the feature is broken simply because another country or model displays it. Do not change your account region or install modified APKs to bypass restrictions; those approaches can create compatibility and support problems, especially for a health-related feature.

Is the Galaxy Watch8 worth buying for Antioxidant Index?

Buy the Watch8 only if you would use Antioxidant Index as a lightweight nutrition habit prompt alongside the watch’s broader features. It is quick, non-invasive, and may make gradual changes in fruit and vegetable intake more visible without manual food logging.

It is not a good reason to buy the watch if you want a clinically validated antioxidant or nutrition test. The result is indirect, can vary with technique and conditions, and requires consistent tracking over weeks. People who already follow a balanced diet may find that it adds little actionable information.

The feature also is not necessarily a reason to choose the standard Watch8 over every other Samsung option. Samsung lists the Watch8 Classic and Watch Ultra among supported devices, so the decision should focus on the complete package: size, design, rotating bezel, weight, outdoor features, battery, price, phone compatibility, and regional availability. The Watch8 Classic should not be expected to produce a materially different Antioxidant Index result merely because of its design.

The better buying question is: Would I use this as a simple nutrition trend feature alongside the rest of the watch? If the answer is no, do not pay extra for it—or mistake it for a medical measurement.

Bottom line

Galaxy Watch8’s Antioxidant Index is best understood as a carotenoid trend tool. It uses a five-second fingertip optical scan to estimate skin carotenoid levels, giving you a broad wellness prompt related to fruit and vegetable intake. It does not measure blood antioxidants, total antioxidant capacity, or disease risk. Use consistent technique, judge trends over several weeks, and compare the feature with your actual buying needs—not with the capabilities of a laboratory test.
