A March 2026 firmware sighting suggested Samsung’s Galaxy Watch9 had reached a meaningful testing stage, but it did not prove the watch was finished or ready for stores. Samsung has since announced the Watch9, and it is now available in the U.S. The leak broadly pointed toward a summer launch; its “development complete” wording was shorthand for a likely engineering milestone, not a verified sign that final hardware, software, or production was locked.

What the March firmware leak said

On March 30, 2026, reports said leaker Mohammed Khatri had spotted a device believed to be the U.S. Galaxy Watch9 on CheckFirm, a service used to monitor Samsung firmware. Android Central identified the alleged model as SM-L345U; TechRadar attributed the sighting to the leaker via SamMobile. Samsung did not confirm that model number at the time. Android Central’s report and TechRadar’s coverage treated the firmware as a sign that core work was done and testing was under way.

That was a plausible reading, but not a formal Samsung milestone. Firmware associated with a device suggests there is a hardware or development platform on which software can be tested. It can indicate that hardware-software integration has progressed beyond an early concept. It does not establish that the final retail design is fixed, that all software is complete, or that certification and mass production have begun.

What the leak did—and did not—prove

Claim What the evidence supports
The Watch9 existed The reported firmware sighting strongly suggested a device was being tested; Samsung’s later launch confirmed the product.
SM-L345U was the U.S. Watch9 Third-party reporting identified it that way. The original sighting was not Samsung confirmation.
Core development was complete The sighting suggested the device had reached a testing phase. “Complete” should be read as a qualified inference, not a company-confirmed status.
Final software and hardware were locked Not established. Testing, debugging, optimization, and possible changes can continue after firmware appears.
Mass production or U.S. certification had started Not established by a firmware listing.
A July or August launch was likely That was a reasonable cycle-based forecast, and Samsung announced the watch on July 22, 2026. The timing being right does not validate every associated rumor.
Snapdragon would power the Watch9 Confirmed later by Qualcomm.
The Watch9 would beat Garmin That was commentary, not a conclusion supported by comparative testing.

Product development has several overlapping stages: concept and design, engineering validation, firmware bring-up, system testing, regulatory and carrier approvals, manufacturing ramp-up, and retail launch preparation. A test-server appearance most plausibly points to firmware testing and broader validation. It cannot by itself show that the later stages are finished.

How accurate was the launch signal?

The leak’s timing implication held up broadly: Samsung announced the next Galaxy Watch at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, 2026. That makes the March sighting useful as an early indication that a product was progressing toward a summer launch. It does not mean the firmware record supplied a launch date or guaranteed one; a model number might belong to an engineering unit, regional variant, or test configuration, and a product can still be delayed or changed.

The Watch9 is now listed on Samsung’s U.S. product page in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with Bluetooth and LTE configurations. Qualcomm has also confirmed Snapdragon Wear Elite powers the Galaxy Watch9 globally. Those are post-launch facts; they should not be retroactively treated as things the March firmware sighting proved.

What changed between rumor and retail product?

One example is battery capacity. Before launch, Android Central reported a rumored 435mAh capacity for a 44mm version. Samsung’s U.S. product page now lists a 390mAh battery in its key takeaways. These figures should not be blended into a single confirmed specification: the earlier leak may have referred to a different variant or an incorrect or preliminary figure, while the official page is the current source for the information it lists. Battery capacity alone also does not determine runtime; LTE, GPS, display settings, workouts, sleep tracking, sensors, and software all affect use.

U.S. price and choosing a version

Samsung’s U.S. purchase page listed the following prices when checked on August 18, 2026. Prices, promotions, trade-in values, and stock can change.

Configuration Listed price
40mm Bluetooth $379.99
40mm LTE $429.99
44mm Bluetooth $429.99
44mm LTE $459.99

Check Samsung’s current purchase page before buying. Choose a size based on wrist comfort and fit rather than assuming that a larger case guarantees longer battery life. LTE is useful if you want calls or connectivity away from your phone, but it costs more and may require a compatible carrier plan. Bluetooth is the simpler choice if your phone is usually nearby.

Should you wait—or buy the Watch9 now?

In March, the firmware report was a reasonable signal for Galaxy Watch buyers to wait for Samsung’s expected summer announcement rather than buy immediately. That question has expired: the Watch9 is official and available in the U.S. The relevant choice now is whether its price, size, connectivity, and features suit you.

  • If you own a Galaxy Watch8: The leak itself is no reason to upgrade. Compare the Watch9’s official features with what you use, and consider waiting for a sale if there is no specific improvement you need.
  • If you are buying your first Android smartwatch: Check phone compatibility and the Samsung Health requirements for any health feature that matters to you. Galaxy integration may be most useful if you already use a Samsung phone and services.
  • If you want serious endurance or outdoor training: Do not treat the old “Garmin-beater” headline as a test result. Garmin is often a better fit for battery-focused training and outdoor features; Samsung emphasizes smartwatch functions, apps, communication, and its health ecosystem. The right choice depends on your activities and priorities.
  • If you are comparing ecosystems: Pixel Watch may suit people invested in Google and Fitbit, while Apple Watch is designed for iPhone users. The Watch9 is best considered as a general-purpose Android smartwatch, not a universal replacement for every sports watch.

Verdict on the development claim

The March CheckFirm report was a credible, specific pre-launch signal, and the July announcement validated its broad timing direction. But “development may have been completed” was too easy to overread: the evidence pointed to a likely testing milestone, not a finished retail product. Now that Samsung sells the Watch9 in the U.S., buyers should base their decision on the official model, current price, and their phone and fitness needs—not on what a firmware listing once implied.
