Verdict: The Samsung Gear Sport was arguably Samsung’s best all-around smartwatch when it launched in 2017. It combined the Gear S3’s excellent rotating bezel and smartwatch features with a smaller, lighter case and useful swim tracking. In 2026, however, it is a legacy device: worth considering only as a very cheap used watch for someone with a compatible older phone. Samsung says it is not compatible with Galaxy phones running Android 14, including the Galaxy S24 family.

The Gear Sport was released as a middle ground between Samsung’s large, rugged Gear S3 and its fitness-oriented Gear Fit products. That positioning made sense. It was smaller and easier to wear than the S3, but still felt like a proper smartwatch rather than a basic activity band.
The original review from October 2017 called it Samsung’s best all-around smartwatch at the time. That remains a fair historical verdict. It is not a fair description of the best Samsung watch to buy today.
What is the Samsung Gear Sport?
The Gear Sport is a Bluetooth smartwatch running Samsung’s Tizen-based wearable software. It relies heavily on a paired phone for setup, connectivity and many connected features; there was no LTE or cellular version to replace a phone.

Its most important design decision was retaining Samsung’s rotating bezel. You can scroll through widgets, notifications, settings and apps by turning the bezel instead of repeatedly swiping across a small screen. The watch also has a touchscreen and physical buttons.
Core specifications include a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED display with 360 × 360-pixel resolution, Gorilla Glass 3, a dual-core 1.0GHz processor, 768MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi and NFC. GPS, GLONASS and BeiDou positioning were listed in the contemporary specifications.
Design and comfort
The Gear Sport measures approximately 44.6 × 42.9 × 11.6mm and weighs about 50g without its strap. That is substantially more compact than the Gear S3 and makes it easier to wear during exercise or under a shirt cuff.

The launch colorways included black and blue.
It is not a truly slim watch, though. At 11.6mm thick, it can still look and feel bulky on a small wrist. Its sporty styling also lacks the neutral, jewelry-like appearance some buyers want from an everyday watch.
Display and rotating-bezel interface
The 1.2-inch AMOLED panel remains one of the Gear Sport’s strengths. It is bright, colorful and sharp enough for notifications, workout information and watch faces. The circular interface looks coherent, rather than like a phone interface compressed onto a wrist.
The rotating bezel is even more important. It provides precise physical control when scrolling through long lists or changing settings, and it keeps the touchscreen from becoming the only way to operate the watch while exercising.
The weakness was Tizen’s tendency to offer too much. Samsung supplied numerous settings, widgets, apps and utilities, but not all of them were valuable on such a small display. The result was capable software that could also feel cluttered.
Fitness and health tracking
The Gear Sport covers the basic fitness functions most casual users expected in 2017:

Its sensor package includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, heart-rate sensor and barometer. In the original reviewer’s testing, general activity tracking and automatic workout detection were reliable. That is a reviewer’s experience, not laboratory validation of accuracy.
Do not confuse this feature set with the health-monitoring capabilities of later Galaxy Watch generations. The Gear Sport does not offer modern Samsung features such as ECG, blood-pressure monitoring or body-composition analysis.
Is the Gear Sport good for swimming?
Swimming was the Gear Sport’s clearest advantage over the Gear S3 at launch. Samsung rated it for 50m water resistance and marketed it for swimming, while the watch provided swim-related tracking, including lap information.
“Water resistant” is the more accurate description than “waterproof.” Pool swimming and shallow swimming are not the same as diving, high-pressure water or hot tubs. Samsung’s original rating also describes new product capability, not the condition of a watch that has been worn for almost a decade.
On a used unit, seals may have been weakened by age, impacts, repairs or battery service. A seller’s original specification is therefore not a guarantee that a second-hand Gear Sport remains safe to swim with.
Battery life and charging
The watch has a 300mAh battery and supports wireless charging. Samsung listed up to 48 hours of standby time, while the contemporary review achieved approximately two days of normal use and as much as three days with features reduced.

Every Gear Sport now has an aging lithium-ion battery, and a used example may require daily charging, discharge unusually quickly or fail to charge consistently. Ask a seller how long the watch lasts, confirm that the charging dock is included and insist on a return window when possible.
Smartwatch features—and what is missing
The Gear Sport can display notifications, control music, store music locally, show watch faces and run compatible apps. It also has NFC and lists Samsung Pay support in Samsung’s specification sheet.
There are important qualifications. The contemporary review noted that the watch did not provide full MST Samsung Pay support, so “Samsung Pay” should not be interpreted as equivalent to the payment experience on later Galaxy Watches. Availability also depends on country, bank, software and phone compatibility.

The watch has no LTE model, so it cannot provide a modern standalone calling and messaging experience. Its Tizen app ecosystem was already limited at launch, and its age makes app longevity a central ownership concern. Do not assume that a particular third-party app or service still works without checking it for the exact phone and software combination.

Phone compatibility in 2026
This is the most important part of the current buying decision.
At launch, Samsung supported Galaxy phones running Android 4.3 or later, other Android phones running Android 4.4 or later, and compatible iPhones running iOS 9 or later. Samsung’s current compatibility guidance still lists the Gear Sport among older Gear watches that can work with iPhone 5 or later on iOS 9 and above.
But Samsung now limits Gear Sport compatibility to Android versions through Android 13. Its Android 14 troubleshooting notice specifically identifies the Gear Sport as incompatible with Galaxy phones released with Android 14, including the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung also lists newer Galaxy generations such as the S25 series as incompatible.
That means a modern Galaxy phone is not merely a difficult pairing scenario. A factory reset will not overcome an operating-system compatibility block. Check the exact phone model and Android version before buying.

It may be acceptable for basic notifications and fitness tracking, but it is not a sensible Apple Watch substitute for an iPhone owner seeking deep integration.

The Gear Sport is the better balanced everyday fitness smartwatch, not a complete replacement for the Gear S3. Choose the S3 if LTE, rugged styling or a larger case matters more than swimming and compactness.

For existing owners
Keep using it if it still pairs with your phone, holds a reasonable charge and meets your needs. Its bezel, display and basic fitness features remain useful. Do not rely on its original water-resistance rating without considering the watch’s age.
For buyers with an older compatible phone
A used Gear Sport can make sense if you specifically want a small watch with a rotating bezel, notifications, GPS, basic workouts and swim tracking. Buy only at a genuinely low price, verify battery performance, confirm the charger is included and obtain a return option.

For recent Samsung phone owners
Avoid it. If you use a Galaxy S24 or newer Android 14-era Samsung phone, Samsung’s compatibility documentation rules it out. Choose a current Galaxy Watch instead.
For iPhone owners
Buy only if the price is exceptionally low and you accept limited apps and weaker integration. An Apple Watch is the better fit for iPhone users who want a full smartwatch experience.
For swimmers
The original swim features are appealing, but a current swim-rated watch is safer than trusting the seals of a heavily used 2017 device. The Gear Sport’s 50m rating is not a guarantee of present-day water resistance.
Modern alternatives
For Android users, a current Galaxy Watch provides modern Wear OS software, newer phone compatibility, current health features and a supported ecosystem. Samsung’s March 2026 U.S. MSRP document lists the Galaxy Watch7 Bluetooth 40mm at $249.99 and the Galaxy Watch8 Bluetooth 40mm at $349.99; LTE versions cost more. These are launch or list prices, not necessarily sale prices.
The Galaxy Watch8 Classic is the closest modern Samsung option for buyers attracted to a physical rotating-bezel concept, with March 2026 MSRPs starting at $499.99 for Bluetooth models and $549.99 for LTE models. It is substantially more expensive than a used Gear Sport, but it is designed for current ownership rather than legacy compatibility.
For iPhone users, Apple Watch remains the natural choice for notifications, apps and health integration. If you only need steps and occasional workouts, a current fitness band may offer better value than either a decade-old smartwatch or a premium Galaxy Watch.
Final verdict
The Gear Sport was probably Samsung’s best-balanced smartwatch in 2017. It delivered the Gear S3’s excellent physical interface in a smaller case, added swim tracking, offered a bright display and achieved roughly two days of launch-era battery life.
Its weaknesses were already clear: no LTE, incomplete Samsung Pay support, a cluttered interface and a thin app ecosystem. In 2026, those limitations are joined by aging batteries, uncertain used-device seals and an especially serious compatibility problem with Android 14 Galaxy phones.
