Samsung’s international patent publication WO2024076151A1 describes a smartwatch strap system with a detachable connector and a separately detachable strap assembly. The design could make bands easier to replace and customize, but Samsung has not announced it as a retail product or confirmed compatibility with any Galaxy Watch.
What Samsung’s patent describes
Published on April 11, 2024, WO2024076151A1 is an application by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. describing a strap arrangement for a wearable device. It does not name a specific Galaxy Watch model. Its notable feature is that it separates the connection into components rather than treating the strap and watch connector as one unit. Read the patent publication.
- Watch housing: A recessed seating region receives the connector.
- Link assembly: A detachable part connects the strap arrangement to the watch.
- Strap assembly: The strap and a cover member form a separate unit. The cover member includes a groove for the link assembly, and part of the strap extends around the cover.
- Retention and release: The described arrangement uses a button, spring bars and guide structures to help secure and release the link.
The distinction matters: the filing describes the link assembly and strap assembly as separately detachable. In principle, that could let an owner replace the strap portion without replacing the connector as well. The patent describes a possible mechanism, not Samsung’s eventual accessory packaging or replacement policy.

How attachment and removal could work
The patent’s description suggests this sequence; it should not be read as instructions for a product currently on sale.

- Align the link assembly with the groove in the strap assembly’s cover member.
- Slide the link assembly along the groove into its seated position.
- A button-and-spring arrangement helps retain the connection. The patent describes guide structures intended to prevent the link from separating unintentionally in the sliding direction once mounted.
- Use the release area to detach the link assembly, then separate the strap assembly from it if needed.
Patent drawings and descriptions can include alternative embodiments. They do not guarantee that a commercial version would work exactly this way.
Why a more modular band might matter
The patent identifies a practical limitation of conventional arrangements: replacing a band can mean buying the connector together with the strap. Separating those components could offer a few potential advantages:

- More targeted replacement: If a strap wears out while its link remains usable, the strap portion might be replaceable on its own.
- More ways to customize: Different sport, fabric or other strap styles could potentially share a link assembly.
- Less dependence on tools: A built-in sliding and release mechanism could simplify changes compared with a connection that requires a separate tool.
- More secure retention: A button-and-spring mechanism could be designed to resist accidental separation while still allowing deliberate release.
These are possible benefits, not measured results. The filing provides no independent durability or fatigue-cycle testing, water-resistance rating, or user testing. It also does not establish improvements to sensor accuracy, battery life, charging or watch durability.
How it differs from Samsung’s current band connections
Samsung already has more than one band arrangement in its Galaxy Watch line. Its Dynamic Lug System guide describes button-based band removal and attachment. Samsung’s current support documentation distinguishes that system from the conventional 20mm bands it lists for many other models.

Samsung’s compatibility guidance is the relevant reference for current bands. The patent appears to explore extra modularity within a band assembly, beyond simply attaching or removing a complete band at the watch. That is an interpretation of the filing, not a confirmed comparison from Samsung.
Will it work with current Galaxy Watches?
Compatibility is unverified. The patent does not identify a watch model that will use the design, and Samsung has not connected the filing to a retail product. Given the different attachment standards already in the lineup, there is no basis for assuming that the mechanism will fit Galaxy Watch7, Watch8, Watch Ultra or older watches.

Samsung could use the design in a future watch, adapt only part of it, or never commercialize it. Until Samsung publishes a product and compatibility details, owners should choose replacement bands for the exact watch they have rather than expecting a patent mechanism to work with their current collection.
What owners should watch for if it reaches a product
A modular connector may be convenient, but its value would depend on engineering and accessory details that the patent does not settle. Buyers evaluating a future product should look for answers to these questions:

- Compatibility: Which exact watch models and case sizes does it fit?
- Security: Is the release protected against accidental activation during exercise?
- Cleaning: Can sweat, sand and debris be removed from the grooves and moving parts?
- Durability: Has the mechanism been tested through repeated attachment and removal?
- Replacement cost: Can the strap, link, springs and buttons be replaced independently?
- Accessory choice: Are third-party bands available, or would owners rely on Samsung-specific parts?
- Use in water: Does the accessory support the intended activities without compromising the watch’s use?
- Fit: Does the connector add bulk or pressure points, and does it hold the watch securely against the wrist?
These are practical questions for a potential design, not documented failures of the patent mechanism.
A patent is not a product announcement
The patent publication establishes that Samsung described this invention in an international filing; it does not establish a launch date, product name, retail availability, final specifications or compatibility with existing watches. The original news report about the design, published on December 2, 2024, also treated future-watch timing and backward compatibility as uncertain. Read that report.
The filing is technically interesting because its two-stage arrangement could make the strap and connector independently replaceable. For now, however, current owners should treat it as a possible direction for future accessories—not as a band standard to buy for or a reason to delay a watch purchase.
