Samsung’s published battery-life estimates vary by model: Galaxy SmartTag2 lasts up to 500 days, the original Galaxy SmartTag up to 300 days, and Galaxy SmartTag+ up to 165 days. All three use a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Those figures are estimates, not guarantees: usage, temperature, and the replacement battery can all affect how long it lasts.

Samsung’s estimates are not fixed replacement schedules. The company says actual battery life varies with usage, environmental conditions, and battery manufacturer. In practice, check the tag in SmartThings and replace its cell when the app reports low battery rather than relying on a calendar interval.

Why 500 days is not a guarantee
“Up to 500 days” is Samsung’s typical-use estimate for SmartTag2, not a promise that every tag will last that long. Frequent finding activity, environmental conditions, and the age and quality of the CR2032 can change the result. A battery that has been stored for a long time may be less suitable than a fresh cell, even if it is newly purchased.

SmartTag2’s Power Saving Mode may add up to 40% to battery life, according to Samsung, but it is a trade-off rather than a free boost. The mode is limited to basic Bluetooth finding functions, including Search Nearby signal indication and map functionality. If you rely on other tag functions, check Samsung’s SmartTag2 feature information before enabling it.
How to check a SmartTag’s battery
- Open the SmartThings app on your compatible Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Open the Devices area or device list and select the relevant SmartTag.
- Look for the battery indicator on the tag’s device page.
SmartThings navigation and labels can vary by app version and region, so the precise route may differ. The goal is to open the tag’s own device page and check its battery status. Samsung’s SmartTag support page provides its current app guidance.

How to replace the CR2032 battery
Each of the models covered here uses a replaceable 3-volt CR2032 lithium coin cell; it is not rechargeable in the tag. Use the specified CR2032 size rather than assuming a thinner cell such as a CR2025 or CR2016 is interchangeable.

- Use a fingertip or a thin, non-damaging plastic tool, such as a guitar pick, to gently open the cover. Avoid forcing it with a sharp metal object.
- Remove the old battery without bending or puncturing it.
- Insert a fresh CR2032 with the positive (+) side facing up.
- Snap the cover shut and check that it sits evenly and is fully seated.
- Open SmartThings again to check the battery status, then test the tag’s sound and nearby-finding functions.
Keep loose coin cells away from children and pets; swallowing one is a serious hazard. Do not use a damaged, corroded, or moisture-exposed cell. Recycle used batteries according to local rules. For a replacement walkthrough, see Samsung’s battery-change guidance.

SmartTag2 is rated IP67 when used as designed, but do not assume that water resistance is unaffected if the cover is damaged or not properly closed after replacement. Samsung describes the rating as protection against immersion in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes; rinse off residue and dry the tag afterward if it gets wet. What can make a SmartTag battery run down faster?
- Frequent finding or ringing: Repeated active finding increases use. Samsung lists frequent finding or tracking activity among factors that can affect battery life.
- SmartTag+ AR Finding: Samsung warns that frequent use of this feature may drain SmartTag+ more quickly.
- Temperature and environment: Samsung says environmental conditions, including extremes of temperature, can affect battery life.
- Radio conditions: Bluetooth conditions can affect communication between a tag and phone. Samsung also notes poor cellular conditions among possible influences on finding behavior; the tag itself does not have a cellular modem or independently connect to a cellular network.
- Battery age or quality: Manufacturer, storage history, and age can affect a CR2032’s performance. Buy a fresh cell from a reputable source and keep spares sealed until needed.
SmartTag2’s Power Saving Mode reduces available functions to extend battery life; it is useful only if the remaining basic Bluetooth finding features meet your needs.

If a replacement battery drains quickly
A cell that lasts only days or hours is not consistent with Samsung’s published estimates. Check these items before assuming the tag has failed:
- Confirm the model and use a fresh, reputable CR2032—not a different-sized coin cell.
- Check installation: The positive side should face up. Inspect the battery and contacts for damage or contamination.
- Reseat the cover: Make sure it closes evenly and fully.
- Try another fresh cell if the first replacement may be old, damaged, or poorly stored.
- Reopen SmartThings and check whether the battery status updates. Move the tag close to the phone, then test sound and nearby finding.
- Update relevant Samsung apps and device software if connection or status reporting remains unreliable.
- Contact Samsung support if a known-good battery still drains abnormally or the tag will not respond.
A reset is not the first step for routine battery replacement. If you are reconnecting an older SmartTag or changing its account assignment, follow Samsung’s model-specific instructions; its connection guidance describes reconnection and reset procedures.

Is SmartTag2 the right choice for longer battery life?
Among these Samsung models, SmartTag2 has the longest published estimate and retains a replaceable battery. It is a sensible option if you already use a compatible Galaxy device and want a tag in Samsung’s finding ecosystem. Its advertised 500-day figure is still an estimate, and Power Saving Mode limits functionality.
Compatibility matters as much as battery life. Samsung’s general product information lists Android 9 or later, while its SmartThings Find experience has more specific requirements: compatible Galaxy phones or tablets running Android 11 or later with at least 3 GB of free RAM. UWB-based features also require a compatible Galaxy device. Check Samsung’s current compatibility details for your phone and the functions you want.
SmartTag2 is not a standalone GPS or cellular tracker. Remote finding depends on compatible Galaxy devices and Samsung’s finding ecosystem, so it may not suit someone using an iPhone or seeking a cross-platform tracker. Its shape may also be less suitable than a thin card-style tracker for a wallet. Verify the model’s compatibility before buying.
