Samsung’s 400-million figure was a target for devices, not a count of people using Galaxy AI. In July 2025, the company said it aimed to make Galaxy AI available on more than 400 million devices by year-end; on January 12, 2026, Samsung said it had passed that threshold worldwide. That later statement supports the claim, but does not independently verify the exact December 31 total or show how many watches, rings, phones or other devices counted.
What Samsung promised—and what it later reported
In its July 2025 Galaxy AI expansion announcement, Samsung set a goal of bringing the branded AI experience to more than 400 million devices by the end of 2025. The company presented that as an effort to make AI available across the Galaxy ecosystem, not as a forecast of 400 million new hardware sales. Samsung’s announcement used devices as the measure.
On January 12, 2026, Samsung said Galaxy AI was available on more than 400 million devices worldwide. That is the clearest subsequent evidence that it says it passed the target. It does not establish precisely when the total crossed the threshold, nor does it provide an independent audit or a device-category breakdown. Samsung’s January 2026 statement also discusses engagement separately from availability.
Why 400 million devices does not mean 400 million users
“Available on” describes reach, not necessarily use. The number should not be read as 400 million people who tried, regularly use or even activated an AI feature. One person may own several eligible Galaxy products, while another may own a supported device and never open an AI tool.

- Compatible device: hardware and software that can run at least some supported features.
- Available or provisioned device: a device on which Samsung makes relevant software or services available. Samsung has not publicly explained the exact counting rule behind its 400-million figure.
- Active user: a person who actually uses a feature, a different measure that requires its own definition and reporting.
Samsung has not published a complete methodology distinguishing compatible, updated, activated or active devices. Nor has it disclosed how the total divides among product categories. Treat the figure as a company-reported device-reach claim, not a user count or usage measure.
Which Galaxy products might be included?
Samsung’s broader strategy spans more than phones, but its public materials do not say how many units of each kind contributed to the target. The table describes what the company’s announcements establish—not a verified breakdown of the 400 million.

Samsung’s 2025 Galaxy Tech Forum described AI across mobile products, wearables, tablets, PCs and future form factors, but that ecosystem vision is not a numerical accounting of the target. The forum’s coverage is useful context, not proof of category totals.
Why software updates matter more than a new-device tally
Samsung had a route to expand availability without asking every customer to buy a new phone: software updates can add selected AI features to devices already in use. In 2024, the company extended some Galaxy AI features through One UI 6.1 to the Galaxy S23 family, S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 models. Samsung’s rollout announcement named those devices while describing the features as free through the end of 2025 on supported Galaxy devices.

This is an important distinction for interpreting scale: expanding software eligibility can increase the number of devices on which AI is available, even when owners do not replace hardware. Samsung has not said how much of the 400-million total came from updates, new device sales or other categories. Older and lower-priced models may receive only selected tools, so an AI label does not guarantee the same suite found on a current flagship.
What “AI on a watch” can mean
For watch buyers, the most relevant part of Samsung’s ecosystem story is the link between Galaxy wearables and Samsung Health. Samsung has described AI-linked health experiences using data from products such as Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Ring, with personalized insights as an intended direction. The company’s forum coverage discusses real-time insights and continuous monitoring, but does not establish that every wearable independently runs a full Galaxy AI assistant.
A result shown on a watch can involve several different arrangements: processing on the wearable, processing on a paired Galaxy phone, cloud services, or an AI-generated result displayed in an app. Those are materially different for offline use, compatibility and privacy. Samsung’s 400-million announcement does not specify which arrangement, wearable models or health features were counted.

Galaxy XR and the Z TriFold came later
Galaxy XR: an AI-native platform, not a demonstrated source of scale
Samsung introduced Galaxy XR on October 21, 2025, as an Android XR headset with Gemini integrated into the experience. Samsung, Google and Qualcomm positioned multimodal AI—interaction involving inputs such as voice, vision and gesture—as central to the platform. Samsung announced a U.S. price of $1,799.99. XR matters to Samsung’s longer-term ecosystem strategy because it takes AI beyond a phone screen. But a newly launched, premium headset is not evidence that XR materially contributed to a 400-million-device goal built around the much larger existing Galaxy base. Samsung has not disclosed whether Galaxy XR units were included.
Z TriFold: AI on a new form factor
Samsung announced the Galaxy Z TriFold on December 1, 2025. Its two hinges unfold the device into a 10-inch display intended for a larger mobile workspace. The U.S. launch began January 30, 2026, with a starting price of $2,899. Samsung lists tools including Call Assist, Interpreter, Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist, Photo Assist, Drawing Assist, Audio Eraser, Now Brief and Health Assist on its Z TriFold Galaxy AI support page, subject to the stated restrictions.
The sequence matters: the TriFold was not formally launched when Samsung announced its July 2025 target. It demonstrates how Samsung applies AI to a new, large-screen product, but there is no disclosed sales or device-count evidence showing that it meaningfully drove the 400-million total.

Galaxy AI is a feature collection, not one model
Galaxy AI is Samsung’s brand for a collection of features, not a single AI model or standalone app. The suite can combine Samsung services with Google Gemini, Android capabilities and third-party services. Features such as translation, writing help, note summaries, image editing and health-related insights may have different providers and technical requirements. Availability also differs by model, software version, app, language and country.

That means “this device has Galaxy AI” is not enough to determine whether a particular function will work. Some functions require an internet connection or account; others may be processed on-device. Check the requirements for the specific feature rather than assuming all AI on a Galaxy product follows one processing or privacy model.
Does the 400-million target mean Galaxy AI will stay free?
No. Samsung’s earlier wording said Samsung Galaxy AI features would be free through the end of 2025 on supported devices; it was not a blanket promise that every AI service would remain free indefinitely. Samsung’s current Z TriFold support language says basic Samsung Galaxy AI features are free, while enhanced Samsung AI and third-party AI features may be subject to different terms or fees. That guidance is specific to the support material and should not be generalized into a permanent guarantee for every service or device.
The same support page notes that some features require a Samsung account and network connection, and that availability can vary by country, region, carrier, app, language and device. Samsung also cautions that results may not be accurate or guaranteed. Subscription terms and availability can change, so check the current terms for the exact feature before relying on it.

What Galaxy owners should check before relying on an AI feature
- Confirm the exact model: check Samsung’s device-specific support information; partial feature availability is common on older or lower-cost hardware.
- Check software and app versions: confirm the required One UI, Android, Samsung Health or companion-app version for the feature.
- Verify account and connectivity needs: see whether a Samsung account, Google account, paired Galaxy phone or network connection is required.
- Check language and location: translation, health and other services may not be available in every language or region.
- Understand processing and privacy: identify whether the particular tool works on-device, uses cloud processing or passes through a paired phone, then review the applicable controls.
- Review cost and output: check current service terms and treat generated text, summaries, edits and health insights as outputs to verify—not guaranteed facts.
