Samsung released a software fix in April 2024 after some Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic owners reported unresponsive or delayed touch input. The rollout began in South Korea with build R940XXU1AXC2 and was later reported in the United States and Europe. That build identifies the 2024 fix; a watch checking for updates now may be offered a newer version instead. If the screen is unreliable, Samsung’s temporary workaround is to turn off Touch screen to wake.
What happened to the Galaxy Watch 6 touchscreen?
After an earlier update intended to improve the watches’ Touch Screen Panel (TSP) firmware, some owners reported the opposite: taps or swipes stopped registering, touch response became delayed, or the screen became unresponsive. Physical buttons could continue working, and restarting the watch sometimes restored touch temporarily before the problem returned. Reports particularly associated the behavior with waking the screen by touching it; that association is not a claim that every touch failure has the same cause. Contemporaneous reporting dated April 10, 2024 described complaints and Samsung’s workaround, but did not establish how many watches were affected.
Check whether touch itself has failed
If the display does not wake when tapped, press the Home/Power button and then try a tap or swipe while the screen is on. This helps distinguish a wake problem from touch input that remains unresponsive after the display is awake. On the Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, the rotating bezel also provides a physical way to navigate some screens.

The reported affected models were the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. The 2024 South Korean release was identified as R940XXU1AXC2; reports later described the corrective update rolling out internationally, including in the United States and Europe. Availability could differ by watch variant, country, carrier, and rollout phase, so the report does not establish that every device received it at the same time. It also said the update was a bug-fix release rather than a new security-patch upgrade, with the watches remaining at the March 2024 security level at that time. This historical build is not necessarily the newest firmware available now: install the latest update offered for your own watch rather than looking only for AXC2. The cited report did not establish that Galaxy Watch 4, Watch 5, or Watch 5 Pro models shared the defect or needed the same release.

How to check for and install a watch update
Samsung’s support instructions use the Galaxy Wearable app. Labels can vary by model and software version; use the closest equivalent shown on your phone or watch.
- Connect the watch to the phone by Bluetooth and make sure the phone has a network connection.
- Open Galaxy Wearable on the phone and open the watch settings.
- Tap About watch or About band, then Update watch software.
- Tap Update now or Download updates manually, if shown, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Allow the watch to disconnect and restart if prompted; installation can take several minutes.
Some watches also show an on-device route at Settings → About watch → Software → Update software. Samsung’s watch software update guidance notes that the normal update process requires a Bluetooth connection to the phone and a network connection.

Use Samsung’s workaround while waiting
If the update is not available or touch becomes unreliable when waking the display, turn off the setting linked to the reported behavior:

- On the watch, open Settings → Display.
- Scroll to Touch screen to wake and switch it off.
The setting may also be available in Galaxy Wearable under the watch’s display settings. With touch-to-wake disabled, use a physical button, raise your wrist, or another enabled wake method to turn on the display. The Samsung display-settings guide lists the setting for Wear OS watches. Disabling it is a workaround for the reported trigger, not a firmware repair or a guarantee against other touchscreen faults.

What to do if the screen is frozen now
Force-restart, then check for software updates
- Press and hold the watch’s Home/Power key and Back key at the same time.
- When “Rebooting…” appears, release the buttons. On some models this can take up to about 30 seconds.
- After the watch restarts, reconnect it to Galaxy Wearable if needed and check for watch software updates using the steps above.
- Check for updates to Galaxy Wearable and the watch’s apps or related device plugins on the connected phone.
Samsung documents the two-button restart and update checks in its troubleshooting guidance. Restarting may restore operation, but temporary recovery by itself does not confirm that the underlying software issue has been resolved.
If it still does not respond
- Charge the watch with its supplied or compatible charging dock, then try the two-button restart again.
- Remove gloves and anything covering or obstructing the display; clean and dry both the screen and your finger.
- Remove accessories that could interfere with the screen or controls.
- Look for cracks, dents, a lifted or separated screen, water exposure, or a stuck or damaged button.
- If touch works only intermittently, update or remove recently installed watch apps that may be unstable.
Samsung lists outdated software, apps, physical condition, gloves, dirty hands, and accessories among possible causes of an unresponsive screen in its watch troubleshooting guidance.

How to tell a software problem from damage or another cause

Wake behavior can also be affected by modes and power settings. Samsung says Power Saving can prevent waking by touch or wrist raise; Water Lock, Do Not Disturb, Theater mode, and Good night or Bedtime mode can also disable some wake behaviors. Check whether one of these is active before treating a wake-only problem as a touchscreen failure. See Samsung’s guidance on watch modes and wake behavior.

If the update does not appear
The 2024 rollout was not reported as simultaneous everywhere. A delay can reflect the watch’s model variant, country, carrier, or rollout phase. The device may also already be on later firmware, or may not be a Galaxy Watch 6 or Watch 6 Classic. Do not treat the absence of AXC2 as proof that the watch lacks a fix.

- Charge the watch and confirm that it is paired over Bluetooth with the phone.
- Update Galaxy Wearable from the phone’s app store.
- Restart both the phone and the watch.
- In Galaxy Wearable, check About watch → Update watch software again.
- While waiting, disable Touch screen to wake if that setting is associated with the trouble.
- If the watch remains unusable or cannot complete the update, contact Samsung Support.
Do not install firmware from an unofficial source: the reported build and rollout do not establish a safe sideloading procedure for every model and region.
When to reset the watch or seek service
A factory reset is a later software troubleshooting step, after charging, restarting, checking updates, and ruling out simple environmental causes. It erases watch data and settings, so back up through Galaxy Wearable first. Samsung’s reset guidance uses the watch’s Settings → General → Reset menu; reconnect the watch to Galaxy Wearable afterward. LTE models may need carrier reactivation or a new activation QR code after a reset. A reset can help with a software conflict, but it will not repair physical damage or replace the specific firmware update.
Request service if the watch has visible damage or relevant water exposure, buttons are damaged, or touch remains unusable after the newest offered update and restart. Samsung’s physical-condition troubleshooting page explains that damage and water exposure can impair the display and other watch functions.
