The watch most often meant by “Seiko Astron GPS – The Novak Djokovic Limited Edition” is the 2016 SSE105 (often listed as SSE105J1). It is a 3,500-piece Astron GPS Solar World-Time with Seiko’s slimmer 8X22 caliber, a rose-gold-colored titanium case, ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal and dark mother-of-pearl dial. It remains an appealing travel watch and an important Djokovic collaboration, but its 44.8 mm case, discontinued status and specialist electronics make condition and serviceability more important than the limited-edition label alone.

These specifications come from Seiko’s launch announcement. The case back is individually numbered and signed by Djokovic; the original presentation included a personal-message card and special box.
Why this is the SSE105
“Novak Djokovic Limited Edition” is not a unique model name. Seiko produced several Djokovic Astrons. The SSE105 is specifically the 2016 World-Time model with the 8X22 movement and mother-of-pearl dial.

The Djokovic connection
Seiko partnered with Djokovic from 2014, making Astron GPS Solar a logical match for a player whose career involves constant international travel. Seiko presented the SSE105 as a blend of sporting performance and elegance rather than a conventional team-branded sports watch. The signature and serial number on the back, plus the dedicated packaging, are the meaningful collectible details.
What “GPS Solar World-Time” actually means
The SSE105 is an analog quartz watch, not a smartwatch and not a location tracker. Its solar cells charge an internal energy cell, while GPS reception supplies time and time-zone information. The watch stores world-time data and can adjust its displayed time when reception succeeds. It is receiving satellite signals—not transmitting your location, pairing with a phone or providing navigation.
Reception is not guaranteed indoors. Buildings, roofs and other obstructions can prevent a successful signal, and regional or time-zone changes may require manual selection. The operating sequence should be taken from the SSE105 instruction manual rather than assumed from a newer Astron. A failed reception attempt does not stop the watch: it continues as quartz timekeeping.

What the 8X22 caliber provides
- GPS-controlled time and time-zone adjustment.
- World-time coverage for 40 time zones.
- Perpetual calendar correct through February 2100.
- Daylight-saving-time function.
- Reception-result indication and power-saving modes.
- Stated accuracy of ±15 seconds per month without a received time signal, at 5–35°C.
Seiko’s promotional material describes GPS-synchronized time with “one second every 100,000 years” language. That is a description of the satellite reference, not the watch’s standalone quartz accuracy. The practical no-reception specification is the ±15-seconds-per-month figure above.
The 8X22 was significant because Seiko positioned it as a slimmer GPS Solar caliber: the announced case is 12.4 mm thick, compared with 13.3 mm for other 8X-series models cited at launch. Slimmer does not mean small, however.
Design, materials and wrist presence
The rose-gold-colored coating is applied to titanium; it is not a solid-gold case. A black ceramic bezel frames the dark mother-of-pearl dial, whose blue, green and purple flashes change with the light. That variation is normal for natural mother-of-pearl, not a defect. Sapphire protects the dial, and the black crocodile strap closes with a three-fold push-button clasp.

At 44.8 mm across, this is a large watch even though its 12.4 mm thickness is restrained for an early GPS Astron. The diameter creates substantial wrist presence, while the dark dial and dressier colors make it less overtly technical than many Astrons. Fit depends on wrist shape, lug geometry and strap flexibility; buyers should judge photographs on their own wrist rather than rely on the thickness figure alone. On used examples, inspect the crocodile leather carefully for drying, cracking, stretching or an unrecorded replacement.
Buying a used SSE105
- Confirm the reference. The case and documentation should identify SSE105; regional listings may add “J1.” Do not accept a generic “Djokovic Astron” description.
- Match the specification. Check the titanium rose-gold-colored case, ceramic bezel, mother-of-pearl dial, black crocodile strap and 10-bar rating.
- Inspect the case back. Look for the Djokovic signature, individual serial number and clear, consistent engraving.
- Check completeness. Original box, message card, warranty papers and manuals add provenance, but their absence does not by itself prove a fake.
- Test the functions. Ask for evidence that GPS reception succeeds and that the solar power reserve behaves normally. Request service records where available.
- Examine wear points. Look for coating loss, bezel chips, sapphire damage, clasp wear and strap deterioration. Coating repairs can be more difficult than refinishing untreated steel.
- Use buyer protection. Prefer an established dealer or marketplace with authentication and a meaningful return period. “New old stock” can still have an aged strap or require service.
The original European price was about €2,000. SSE105 is discontinued, and there is no defensible universal current price without checking live listings and, preferably, completed sales. Asking prices are not proof of market value. A 3,500-piece run establishes scarcity, not guaranteed appreciation.
Strengths and compromises
Why consider it
- Distinctive mother-of-pearl and rose-gold-colored titanium design.
- Useful GPS synchronization and 40-zone world-time system.
- Relatively slim profile for an early GPS Astron.
- Sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel and numbered case back.
- Important early chapter in Seiko’s Djokovic partnership.
Why hesitate
- 44.8 mm will be too large for some wrists.
- GPS Solar electronics are more specialized than ordinary quartz and may require an appropriate Seiko service channel.
- Discontinued status shifts the risk to condition, authenticity and parts availability.
- The crocodile strap may need replacement regardless of the watch’s condition.
- Limited-edition status alone does not make it an investment-grade collectible.
Alternatives
A current Astron GPS Solar offers newer electronics, current warranty and easier parts support, but not the SSE105’s Djokovic signature, 2016 styling or mother-of-pearl configuration. Seiko’s current U.S. Astron collection includes newer models and limited editions; prices and availability change.

A radio-controlled solar watch may be simpler and smaller but depends on terrestrial signals rather than GPS and may have less comprehensive worldwide coverage. A mechanical GMT or world-time watch offers traditional horology but requires more frequent adjustment and servicing. A smartwatch adds notifications and location features, solving a different problem entirely.

The SSE105 suits a Djokovic or Seiko collector, a traveler who values analog GPS timekeeping, or anyone attracted to an unusual dress-sport design. It is a poor fit for someone wanting a discreet watch, a mechanical movement, phone connectivity or a demonstrably investment-grade collectible.

Does the SSE105 track my location?
