The Seiko Astron SSH003J1 is a titanium GPS Solar dual-time watch from Seiko’s 2018-era 5X generation. Its exact movement is Calibre 5X53—not simply “5X.” It can use GPS signals to set the local time and time zone, while a solar-charged rechargeable battery powers the watch. That combination is especially useful for international travel, but it does not mean GPS works indoors or that the watch needs no charging or eventual service.
The SSH003 remains an appealing option if you want its particular design and find it at a sensible price. It is a large, relatively complex watch, and its availability is now region-dependent: Seiko’s current U.S. Astron collection focuses on newer references, while some regional Seiko pages still list the SSH003. Check local stock, warranty and the condition of any older or pre-owned example before buying.
What the SSH003 is—and what “5X” means
Astron is Seiko’s GPS Solar watch family; SSH003J1 is the model reference, and 5X53 is the specific caliber inside this watch. “5X” describes the wider movement family, which includes later calibers such as 5X83. The distinction matters when comparing features or consulting a manual: the SSH003’s instructions and specifications are for 5X53.

Seiko introduced the 5X generation in 2018, describing it at the time as its smallest and thinnest GPS Solar Astron generation. The SSH003’s 42.9 mm case and 12.2 mm thickness match that historical context; the claim should not be read as a current comparison with every GPS watch. In practical terms, the SSH003 pairs GPS-based timekeeping with a dedicated second-time-zone display. It does not require a phone, Bluetooth, an app or a mobile-data plan for its core GPS time-setting functions.
What Calibre 5X53 does
GPS time-zone adjustment and time adjustment
These are distinct operations. Time-zone adjustment is the travel function: when reception succeeds, GPS information lets the watch identify the local time zone and adjust the displayed time and date. It applies daylight-saving time where appropriate and configured. Use this when you have changed regions and want the main display to show local time.
Manual time adjustment synchronizes the time using GPS while retaining the selected time zone. It is useful when you want an accurate time display but do not want the watch to change its zone. If reception is unavailable, the time can also be set manually; that fallback does not provide GPS synchronization.

Charge level, reception opportunities, obstructions and in-flight mode all matter. Seiko lists a world-time setting range of 39 time zones; that is the watch’s programmed coverage, not a promise of satellite reception indoors or in every location.
Dual time, transfer and calendar
The watch displays a main time and a second time zone, with an AM/PM indication for the dual-time display. Its time-transfer function swaps the main and sub-dial indications, a useful way to make a destination time the primary display while retaining the other zone.

The perpetual calendar is specified to remain correct through February 28, 2100, assuming the watch is operating and correctly set. “Perpetual” here does not mean the programmed calendar extends indefinitely beyond that date.

GPS synchronization is not continuous
The watch receives GPS signals periodically or when you request reception; it does not continuously track satellites like a navigation device. After synchronization, its quartz system keeps time between receptions. Seiko’s stated figure of about ±15 seconds per month at 5–35°C is the relevant accuracy specification when GPS is not being received. GPS synchronization can correct the displayed time, but it does not make the standalone quartz oscillator continuously “atomic-clock accurate.”
For reception, go outdoors with an open view of the sky and point the dial upward. Buildings, overhangs, aircraft cabins, steep terrain and other obstructions can interfere. Low charge can prevent reception from starting, and GPS reception uses considerably more energy than ordinary timekeeping. Seiko advises charging until the indicator is at least at the middle position before attempting reception.
How to synchronize the 5X53
The button names below follow Seiko’s manual, not labels printed on the case. Check the diagram in the official 5X53 user guide to identify Button A and Button B on your watch.

Manual GPS time adjustment
- Move outdoors to a location with a clear view of the sky; point the dial upward.
- Check that the charge indicator is not at low. If it is, expose the watch to light before trying.
- Press and hold Button A for about three seconds. Release it when the second hand moves to the 0-second position.
- Wait for reception to finish. The manual-time procedure may take up to about one minute depending on conditions.
- Read the result: the second hand at 8 seconds indicates success (Y); at 52 seconds indicates failure (N). Press Button B or wait for the result display to end and the normal display to return.
This operation corrects the time without changing the selected time zone. For a change of region, use the time-zone adjustment operation described in the manual instead.

When GPS reception is unavailable
For the manual time-setting fallback, Seiko’s 5X53 guide instructs you to pull the crown to the second click, press and hold Button B for about six seconds until the second hand reaches 0 seconds, then release it. Turn the crown to set the time and push it back in at the same time as a reference time signal. Consult the guide for the full procedure and exact controls.
In-flight mode and failed reception
In-flight mode disables GPS reception. Enable it on an aircraft or where GPS operation is restricted, then reset it after leaving that environment. While it is active, GPS time-zone, manual time and automatic time adjustments are unavailable.
If reception fails, check the charge indicator and in-flight mode first. Then move to an open-sky location, point the dial upward and retry the appropriate operation. If the watch still cannot receive GPS, set the time manually and try reception later. Seiko documents these procedures and common failure causes in its 5X53 manual.
Solar charging and power-save behavior
The SSH003 converts light into power and stores it in a rechargeable secondary battery; it does not use a conventional disposable watch battery. Seiko gives approximately six months of operation on a full charge and approximately two years in power-save mode. These are stated operating figures, not a reason to leave the watch in darkness indefinitely. Natural and artificial light can charge it, but ordinary indoor lighting should not be assumed to replenish it as quickly as strong daylight.

The second hand’s behavior can indicate a low-energy state rather than a mechanical fault. Seiko’s 5X53 guide describes a two-second step as a low-energy warning and a five-second step as a more severe low-charge state. Power Save 1 stops the second hand at the 15-second position after at least 72 hours without adequate light; sufficient light or button activation can resume operation. Power Save 2 stops it at 45 seconds after a longer period of insufficient charge. In that state, GPS reception and automatic time adjustment are disabled until charge is restored. After a long period without light, allow the watch to charge and check its time-zone setting before relying on it.
Overcharge prevention is specified, but solar charging does not mean the rechargeable cell and electronics can never need attention. With an older or pre-owned watch, ask about service history and verify that the watch accepts and retains charge. For a cell or electronics issue, use Seiko or an authorized service provider rather than treating the rechargeable cell as a user-replaceable battery.

At 42.9 mm across and 50.7 mm lug to lug, the SSH003 is not a small dress watch. The lug-to-lug span is particularly worth checking if your wrist is narrow or you prefer a compact fit. Its 12.2 mm thickness is relatively restrained for a GPS Solar watch, but the angular case, bracelet and multi-hand dial make it visually more technical than a conventional three-hand Seiko.
Titanium reduces weight compared with steel—Seiko describes its titanium as about 40% lighter—and can make a large watch easier to wear. Titanium and any hard coating are not scratch-proof, however. The sapphire crystal is highly scratch-resistant but can chip or fracture after a hard impact. The ceramic/titanium bezel construction is part of the model’s premium materials package.

It is suited to everyday water exposure and swimming-related use when the watch is in good condition and the crown and controls are properly secured. For an older example, have seals and water resistance checked rather than assuming the original rating remains intact.

SSH003 versus newer Astrons
The SSH003’s 5X53 combines GPS Solar, dual time and a comparatively slim 12.2 mm profile. Newer 5X83 Astrons add chronograph capability to the dual-time GPS Solar platform while retaining functions such as GPS time-zone adjustment, perpetual calendar, daylight-saving time and time transfer. Relevant 5X63 references are also part of Seiko’s newer GPS Solar range, but features and dimensions vary by model. These are alternatives, not identical replacements.
Choose by the qualities that matter to you: the SSH003 may appeal if you prefer its thinner case, simpler dual-time layout or specific appearance. A current-generation reference may be easier to find with current warranty support and may offer newer functions. Seiko’s current U.S. Astron collection is a useful starting point; it emphasizes newer references rather than listing the SSH003 among visible current models. That does not prove the older model is unavailable everywhere: regional Seiko catalog pages still list it.
Buying an SSH003 today
Availability and price depend on region. Seiko’s regional pages list the SSH003 at US$2,100 on its Middle East site and £1,950 on its UK site. These are region-specific catalog prices, not proof of U.S. stock or a current U.S. recommended price. Check the local Seiko site or an authorized retailer for current availability, price and warranty terms before comparing it with a newer Astron.

If buying older stock or pre-owned, verify the SSH003J1 reference, seller reputation, warranty status and service history. Inspect the bracelet and clasp for wear, and ask the seller to demonstrate charging, normal timekeeping and GPS reception if possible. A watch can keep time without successfully receiving GPS, so those are separate checks. Older storage or age may affect the rechargeable system; a seller’s assurance that it is “solar” is not a substitute for confirming that it holds charge.
- The SSH003 makes sense if GPS time-zone adjustment is valuable, you travel, you prefer quartz convenience, and you want this titanium 5X53 design at a price that compares favorably with newer options.
- Look elsewhere if you want a compact or discreet watch, a simpler dial, current-generation functions, or easy access to current local stock and warranty support. A smaller Astron 3X-series reference may suit a buyer who finds the SSH003 too large, though its features vary by model.
- Think carefully at a near-newer-model price. The SSH003’s premium buys GPS hardware, solar power management, titanium, sapphire, dual time and calendar functions—not the movement finishing or traditional mechanical interaction of a similarly priced mechanical watch.
