For most Pixel Watch 3 owners, the Pixel Watch 4 is a worthwhile but non-essential upgrade. Its strongest advantages are longer rated battery life, faster charging, a brighter and larger-feeling display, dual-frequency GPS, and a design Google says can be serviced with a replaceable battery and display. The core Fitbit health experience and many software features are shared, so a Watch 3 that still suits your routine does not need replacing just to get a newer interface.

If you’re buying after August 20, 2026, compare the Pixel Watch 5 as well: Google announced it on August 12 and scheduled it to reach stores on August 20. Check live prices and feature differences before choosing between the older models.

Both watches are Android smartwatches with Fitbit health tracking, a circular design, 41mm and 45mm sizes, and the same broad Wear OS app experience. The Watch 4 improves several everyday pain points rather than replacing that experience: it can last longer between charges, charges more quickly, is easier to read in bright light, and adds dual-frequency GPS. It also brings LTE satellite emergency communication and a serviceable design.

Those changes matter most if you own a 41mm Watch 3, run or hike outdoors, track sleep, or plan to keep your next watch for years. If you mainly check notifications, count steps, and take occasional workouts—and the Watch 3 battery is holding up—the older model remains capable, especially at a substantial discount.

Battery life and charging: the biggest day-to-day upgrade

Google rates the Watch 3 for up to 24 hours with its always-on display, or up to 36 hours in Battery Saver. The Watch 4’s larger batteries and newer platform raise those estimates to 30 hours and 48 hours for the 41mm model, and 40 hours and 72 hours for the 45mm model. Capacities are 325mAh and 455mAh on Watch 4, compared with 307mAh and 420mAh on Watch 3.

These are approximate ratings under specified test conditions, not promises that every watch will last that long. GPS workouts, LTE, music streaming, frequent notifications, health sensing, brightness, and always-on settings all affect runtime. Reviewer testing can give useful context but is not a guarantee: Tom’s Guide reported about 48 hours with a 45mm Watch 3 and close to 60 hours with a 45mm Watch 4 in its own tests. Different people and settings will see different results.

The 41mm Watch 3 has the clearest reason to upgrade if its battery barely makes it through the day. The Watch 4’s additional rated time can make it easier to wear the watch overnight for sleep tracking without squeezing charging into an already busy routine. The 45mm Watch 3 may already last longer than its official estimate for some users, so judge the upgrade against your own charging pattern rather than assuming the same gain.

Charging also gets meaningfully quicker. Google’s approximate figures are:

A quick top-up before an evening workout or overnight wear is easier on Watch 4, particularly when you do not want to leave the watch on the charger for an hour. But its charging hardware is not interchangeable with Watch 3’s: Watch 4 uses a USB-C Quick Charge Dock, while Watch 3 uses a USB-C Fast Charging Cable. Budget for the new dock if you keep chargers in several places. Bands are generally cross-compatible, but the charger is not. See Google’s charging and Battery Saver guidance for current use details.

Display and fit: brighter, roomier, still the same basic shape

Both generations come in 41mm and 45mm circular cases with broadly similar dimensions and weights. The Watch 4 changes how the face looks and feels: its domed Actua 360 display is not simply a flat panel with curved glass. It reaches up to 3,000 nits, compared with up to 2,000 nits on the Watch 3. Google also says it has 10% more active display area and 16% smaller bezels.

In practice, the brighter screen should be easier to see outdoors, and the reduced bezel makes the face feel more expansive without changing the watch’s overall concept. The dome may feel more immersive and can make edge gestures and visuals feel different. It is not automatically more durable: both models use custom Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and have 5 ATM and IP68 ratings. A reviewer has also noted that the new screen can make Watch 4 look thicker on the wrist despite similar published dimensions.

The display improvement is useful, especially in sunlight, but it is not by itself a strong reason for every Watch 3 owner to upgrade. If you prefer a flatter-looking screen or are satisfied with outdoor visibility, the Watch 3 remains a sensible fit.

Performance, software, and Gemini: separate hardware gains from updates

Watch 4 moves from the Watch 3’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and Cortex-M33 co-processor to a Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform with a Cortex-M55 co-processor. Google says its machine-learning co-processor is 25% faster while using half the power, based on its own testing. Treat that as a first-party claim, not a promise that every task will feel dramatically faster. Both watches have 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, and the everyday Wear OS functions are familiar across the two.

Watch 4 ships with Wear OS 6, but software should not be confused with hardware. Reports say Watch 3 is slated to receive Wear OS 6 and relevant interface changes, and that Gemini is also coming to the older watch. Rollout timing and feature availability can vary by region and software version; check Google’s current update information for your device. The redesigned Material 3 Expressive interface, Gemini integration, and some updated watch faces should not be treated as Watch 4-only reasons to buy unless a particular feature is confirmed to require its newer hardware.

Google Pixel Watch 5 (45mm) - Android Smartwatch - Obsidian - Wi-Fi
  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

The practical distinction is this: a software update may bring a new interface or assistant to Watch 3, but it cannot add a brighter display, larger battery, faster charging hardware, dual-frequency GPS, LTE satellite capability, or a replaceable battery and screen.

GPS, workouts, and health sensors

The Watch 4 adds dual-frequency GPS; Watch 3 uses standard GPS. The newer positioning hardware may help maintain a more reliable track in challenging places such as dense city streets, near tall buildings, or under partial tree cover. That is a potential improvement, not a guarantee of perfect route data. Satellite visibility, route conditions, software, and how the watch is worn still matter. Casual walkers and indoor exercisers may notice little difference; runners, hikers, and cyclists are more likely to value it.

Dual-frequency GPS alone does not make either Pixel Watch a dedicated endurance-training watch. TechRadar reported heart-rate inaccuracy against a chest strap in its Watch 4 review, so serious athletes should treat the watch’s workout metrics as useful estimates rather than assuming they match dedicated sports equipment. If training precision is central to your decision, compare results against a known route or a device designed for that purpose.

The two watches share most of the important health-sensing capabilities: multi-path optical heart rate, ECG-compatible electrical sensors, red and infrared sensors for SpO2-related features, cEDA/electrical skin-conductance sensing, skin-temperature sensing, and motion and environmental sensors including an accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, compass, and altimeter. Watch 4 changes some underlying hardware, including a far-field skin-temperature sensor, but it is not a wholesale reset of the health platform.

Health features can depend on country, regulatory approval, phone, account, and software version. ECG and SpO2 features are not a medical diagnosis, and accurate readings depend on fit and consistent wear. Fitbit features may require Fitbit Premium after any included trial period. The upgrade case here is more about battery, GPS, and display than access to an entirely new set of health sensors.

Safety: satellite communication is an LTE Watch 4 feature

Pixel Watch 4 LTE can support standalone satellite emergency communication, a meaningful addition for people who hike, camp, travel, or work beyond cellular coverage. It is not available on the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth-only model, and buying Wi-Fi Watch 4 does not make it equivalent to LTE.

Satellite service is not a general-purpose satellite messenger. Availability and operation may depend on country, service activation, emergency-service coverage, and Google’s regional policies. TechRadar reported two years of access at no extra charge in the launch context, but service terms can change; check Google’s current terms and supported regions before relying on it. LTE also costs more up front and may require a carrier plan. Do not treat emergency satellite access as a substitute for a dedicated communicator when your trip or work requires one.

Repairability and keeping the watch for longer

Google describes Watch 4 as its first Pixel Watch designed to be serviceable, with a replaceable battery and display. That makes it a stronger prospect for buyers planning to keep a smartwatch for several years, particularly if battery aging is a concern. Watch 3 does not offer the same stated serviceability.

Replaceable does not necessarily mean easy or inexpensive consumer self-repair. Official repair routes, parts, labor, warranty terms, and providers vary by country. A repaired watch may also need checks to restore water resistance, and the exposed display remains glass that can be damaged. Confirm the local repair pathway rather than assuming Google’s design claim guarantees a low-cost fix wherever you live. Read Google’s Watch 4 announcement for its description of the hardware changes.

Which one should you buy?

Keep your Pixel Watch 3 if…

  • Its battery still lasts long enough for your routine.
  • You mainly use notifications, payments, steps, sleep tracking, and occasional exercise.
  • You do not need dual-frequency GPS, satellite emergency communication, or the brighter display.
  • The software features you want are available on your watch or are expected through an update.
  • You prefer the flatter display, or your phone is on Android 10 and cannot move to Android 11.

Upgrade to Pixel Watch 4 if…

  • Your Watch 3 barely lasts a day, especially if it is the 41mm model or you want overnight tracking.
  • You value fast charging and want a quick top-up between activities.
  • You run, hike, or cycle in places where more robust GPS positioning may help.
  • You often read the display in bright sunlight.
  • You want the LTE model’s satellite emergency feature and have confirmed regional service availability.
  • You plan to keep the watch for years and value a design with replaceable battery and display.
  • The price gap over the Watch 3 is small enough to justify those hardware gains.

Choose a size and connection

Choose Watch 4 41mm if a smaller, lighter watch matters more than maximum endurance. Its rated always-on life is up to 30 hours. Choose 45mm if you have room for a larger case, want a larger viewing area, or prioritize endurance: Google rates it up to 40 hours with the always-on display. LTE makes sense only if you want cellular connectivity or the LTE satellite feature and are willing to account for any carrier plan. Otherwise, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth avoids paying for connectivity you will not use.

Price and value: use the actual price gap

Watch 3 and Watch 4 had the same US launch-price structure, so MSRP alone does not explain which is the better buy. Watch 3 is an older model and may be substantially discounted, while current prices, promotions, trade-ins, and stock can change. Compare the price at checkout rather than assuming a particular deal is still available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If the prices are close: choose Watch 4 for its battery, charging, GPS, display, and serviceability improvements.
  • If Watch 3 is heavily discounted: it can be the better value for a casual user who accepts shorter rated battery life and slower charging.
  • If you need satellite emergency communication: compare Watch 4 LTE specifically, and include any cellular plan cost.
  • If buying older Watch 3 stock: check that it is new or clearly described as refurbished, has a valid warranty, comes from a reputable seller, and includes a return period.

Should you buy Watch 4 now that Watch 5 is arriving?

For purchases on or after August 20, 2026, the Pixel Watch 5 belongs in the comparison because Google announced it on August 12 and scheduled it to reach stores on August 20. Pricing and exact feature differences should be checked at the time you buy; the available information here does not establish that the Watch 5 makes Watch 4 a poor choice. If Watch 4 is discounted and its features meet your needs, it may still be a sensible purchase. If prices are close, compare Watch 5’s current specifications, support, and included services before deciding. See the Watch 5 launch coverage for timing context.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 is another option if you use a Samsung phone and want tighter Samsung Health and Galaxy integration. If you prefer Google’s Fitbit experience or Pixel-specific features, the Pixel Watch line is the more natural fit; check current compatibility and feature availability before switching ecosystems.

Bottom line

The Pixel Watch 4 is a meaningful refinement, not an essential upgrade for every Watch 3 owner. Move up for battery, quick charging, outdoor GPS, brighter viewing, LTE satellite safety, or the more serviceable design. Keep a Watch 3 that still meets your needs, and buy it new with a valid warranty when its discount is large enough to outweigh the older hardware. New buyers shopping after August 20, 2026 should also check Watch 5 pricing and specifications before settling on either older model.
