A black or unresponsive smartwatch screen does not automatically mean the display is dead: a drained battery, charger problem, temporary freeze, moisture or water lock can look similar. First, stop if the watch is swollen, unusually hot, cracked, bent or recently wet; otherwise, check charging and moisture, then try the restart procedure for your brand. Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch use different button combinations.
Identify what “screen not working” means
| What you see | Possible causes |
|---|---|
| Completely black: no face, logo or charging icon | Drained battery, misaligned or faulty charger, software freeze, display fault or liquid damage |
| A fixed image that will not respond | Software or app freeze, or a boot loop |
| Image is visible, but taps and swipes fail | Water lock, moisture, dirt, gloves, an interfering accessory or a touch-layer fault |
| Dim or apparently off display | Brightness or wake settings, a power-saving or theater mode, or low battery |
| Flickering, lines, black patches or discoloration | More suggestive of display or internal hardware damage, particularly after a drop |
| Vibration, sounds or phone connection, but no image | The watch may still be running even if its display has failed |
These clues help narrow down the problem but are not definitive tests. A black screen alone cannot tell you whether the cause is power, software or hardware.
Check for hazards before troubleshooting
- Stop charging and remove the watch from your wrist if it is unusually hot, swollen, cracked, bent or recently exposed to liquid. Seek service rather than repeatedly pressing buttons or trying to charge it.
- If the watch is wet, dry its exterior and charging area completely before connecting it to power. Do not use a hair dryer, oven, radiator or compressed air.
- Never poke microphone or speaker openings or charging contacts with a pin, paper clip or other object. Google warns that objects can damage Pixel Watch openings and contacts; the same cautious approach is sensible for other compact watches.
- Do not keep force-restarting a watch if a button is stuck or the case is distorted.
Check charging, moisture and touch obstacles
- Use the approved charger or dock. Connect it to a known-working power adapter and outlet. A charger that is not seated correctly can make a working watch appear dead.
- Inspect and dry the charging surfaces. Wipe the watch’s charging area and charger with a soft, lint-free cloth; remove dirt and moisture. Re-seat the watch so its magnetic puck or contacts align. Do not scrape contacts with metal.
- Look for any sign of power. A charging icon, logo, vibration, sound or other activity is useful information. Apple says a red lightning-bolt icon means the watch does not have enough battery power to turn on (Apple’s charging and restart guidance). Samsung notes that a Galaxy Watch with a depleted battery may vibrate when you try to turn it on while the screen stays blank (Samsung troubleshooting).
- Give a deeply depleted battery time on the charger, then retry the correct restart below. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all charging time: battery condition, charger and model matter. If the watch gets hot without showing a charging indicator, disconnect it and arrange service.
- If the display works but touch does not, remove obstacles. Dry your fingers and the screen; remove gloves, a case or other accessory that might press on the screen edge. Check whether a screen protector is lifted or poorly fitted. Samsung lists dirty hands, gloves and optional accessories among possible causes of poor touch response (Samsung’s touch troubleshooting).
- Consider water lock. Some watches intentionally ignore touch when water lock is active or the watch detects submersion. Water lock is not the same as a dead display. The gesture for turning it off depends on the model, so use the watch’s manual rather than guessing.
Water resistance is not a guarantee against liquid damage. Google says Pixel Watch resistance can diminish over time and with wear, damage, repair or disassembly (Pixel Watch water and dust resistance guidance). Soap, saltwater, pool chemicals, steam and hot water are not interchangeable with ordinary fresh-water exposure; check the model’s limits. If the screen failed after getting wet, dry the exterior and do not keep charging or restarting it in hopes of fixing internal liquid damage.

Force-restart the watch using its brand’s instructions
Try a force restart after checking charging and removing moisture or touch obstacles. Button names, timing and behavior can differ by model and software version; do not apply another brand’s combination.

Apple Watch
- Press and hold the side button and Digital Crown together.
- Keep holding for at least 10 seconds, or until the Apple logo appears, then release and wait for startup. Follow Apple’s force-restart instructions.
Do not force-restart during a normal software update unless Apple specifically directs you to. If the watch repeatedly returns to the Apple logo, it may be stuck in a boot loop; see Apple’s guidance for a watch stuck on the logo. If charging and a force restart do not bring back the display, request Apple Watch service.
Samsung Galaxy Watch
- Press and hold the Home/Power key and Back key at the same time.
- Hold for at least seven seconds. Some models may need longer, potentially up to about 30 seconds. Release when “Rebooting…” or the Samsung logo appears. Check Samsung’s restart instructions for your model.
Samsung advises using the button combination to recover a watch stuck in a boot loop rather than choosing ordinary Power off or Restart. If the watch starts, check for updates to the watch, Galaxy Wearable app and related device plugins. A stuck physical button may prevent a restart and requires service. For more detail, see Samsung’s boot-loop troubleshooting.
Google Pixel Watch
If the display responds, press and hold the crown for about three seconds, scroll down and tap Restart. If it does not respond, hold the crown and side button together for about 35 seconds, or until the Google “G” logo appears, then wait for startup. Follow Google’s Pixel Watch restart guidance. Google says the Pixel Watch has no physical reset button; do not insert objects into its openings or charging contacts.

If the screen comes back
Take a few steps to reduce the chance of a repeat and protect your data:
- Install available watch software updates and update the companion phone app. For a Galaxy Watch, also check its device plugins.
- If the issue started after installing an app or watch face, remove that recent addition once the watch is stable. Samsung identifies third-party apps as one possible boot-loop cause.
- Notice whether the problem returns with a particular app, watch face, workout or charging session. If it does, that pattern can help support staff diagnose it.
- Sync or back up important data before considering a reset. If service may be needed, record the model and serial number, keep proof of purchase and coverage details, and photograph visible damage.
If the screen stays black or fails again
Arrange manufacturer service when the watch remains unresponsive after a known-working outlet, correctly seated charger and the appropriate force restart, or when it shows physical damage. A watch that vibrates or connects to its phone but never displays an image may have a screen problem, even though other functions are running. Permanent lines, black blotches, flickering, a separated screen, a bent case, repeated overheating or failure after liquid exposure are also reasons to stop home troubleshooting.
If it still connects, use the companion phone app to check its status and sync or export data if the app allows it. Avoid signing the watch out of accounts or unpairing it until important data is synced and you understand the service process. Check any manufacturer, retailer or carrier protection plan before paying for a repair.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A factory reset is a last software step, not a first fix. It may help with a persistent software or setup problem, but it cannot repair a cracked display, failed touch layer, liquid corrosion, battery or charging-circuit damage, or a broken button. Back up or sync first: a factory reset erases watch data and settings. Google explicitly warns that resetting a Pixel Watch erases its apps, settings and data; Samsung likewise recommends backing up before a reset. Use your manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model, and do not reset a watch that has signs of physical or liquid damage as a substitute for service.

Repair, replace or check coverage?
Get an estimate for the exact model and fault before deciding. Cost and eligibility depend on location, inspection, warranty or protection-plan terms, taxes and shipping; there is no universal repair-price cutoff.
- Start with coverage or manufacturer service if the watch is new, the failure happened without an accident, it followed an official update, or you have a service plan. Ask what the inspection covers and whether the repair or replacement affects water-resistance confidence.
- Repair may make sense for a newer or premium watch when the quote is materially below replacement and the battery and other functions are in good condition. Health features, cellular service and accessory compatibility may also make keeping it worthwhile.
- Replacement may be more practical if the watch is several generations old, has a degraded battery as well as display damage, has both liquid and physical damage, or the service quote approaches the cost of a suitable replacement. A high whole-device replacement fee can also change the calculation.
Opening a watch yourself is a high-risk option: it can damage the display, battery or cables and compromise sealing. Consider DIY repair only if the exact model has a verified guide and available parts, you have the right tools and experience, and you accept the risk to water resistance and service eligibility. Do not open a swollen or hot watch.
Official support routes
- Apple Watch: Apple repair and service. Options include in-person and mail-in service. Out-of-warranty pricing depends on the model and inspection; coverage terms differ for accidental damage and normal battery wear.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch: Samsung repair request and Samsung Care+. Samsung says costs depend on diagnosis, warranty status and repair type. Plan benefits and eligibility vary, so do not assume a phone screen-repair price applies to a watch.
- Google Pixel Watch: Start with Google’s troubleshooting guidance or its pairing and recovery support. Service availability and cost depend on model, country and coverage; check Google’s current support flow for your device.
Before approving work, ask whether the watch will be repaired or replaced, whether data may be erased, what warranty applies to the service and what water-resistance claims remain afterward.

Why is my smartwatch black but still vibrating?
Vibration means the watch may still have power even if its display is not showing an image. After checking the charger and trying the correct force restart, persistent vibration with a blank screen is a reason to seek service; it does not prove the display is repairable or that the watch is otherwise healthy.

Why does the screen work but not respond to touch?
Dry and clean the screen and your fingers, remove gloves and accessories that might interfere, and check whether water lock is active. If touch still fails when the watch is dry and unlocked, the touch layer may need service.
Can water lock make the screen seem broken?
Yes. On compatible watches, water lock can intentionally ignore touch input. Follow the instructions for your exact model to turn it off; the gesture is not universal. If the watch was exposed to liquid and now malfunctions, do not assume water lock is the cause.
How long should I charge it before restarting?
There is no dependable time that applies to every model and battery condition. Use the approved charger, make sure it is aligned, and allow time for a deeply depleted battery to respond before trying the model-specific restart. Disconnect it if it becomes hot without a charging indicator.

Will a factory reset fix a black screen?
It may help a persistent software or setup issue, but it will not fix a damaged display, battery, charging circuit or liquid corrosion. A reset erases watch data and settings, so sync or back up first and use it only after less destructive troubleshooting.

Can I repair a smartwatch screen myself?
It is possible for experienced repairers with the exact model’s guide, parts and tools, but watch screens and cases are delicate. Opening the watch can damage components and compromise water resistance or service eligibility. Avoid DIY work on a swollen or hot watch.
Is a cracked smartwatch worth repairing?
It depends on the exact model, repair estimate, age, battery condition, coverage and any other damage. Compare an inspection-based service quote with the cost of a suitable replacement rather than relying on a universal price threshold.
Does water resistance cover liquid damage?
Not necessarily. Limits vary by model, and resistance can diminish with wear, damage, repair or disassembly. Check the manufacturer’s guidance for your watch; a swimming rating is not a guarantee against every kind of liquid exposure.
