Snapchat launched a dedicated Apple Watch app on June 5, 2025. It lets you preview up to the first 100 characters of an incoming Snapchat text chat and reply from your wrist using the keyboard, Scribble, dictation or emoji.
The important distinction is that this is not a full Snapchat client: you cannot view or create photo or video Snaps, Stories, Spotlight posts, Memories or voice notes on the watch.
What Snapchat’s Apple Watch app does
The app is designed for short, glanceable conversations when taking out your iPhone is inconvenient. When a new Snapchat text-chat notification arrives, you can open it on the Apple Watch, read the beginning of the message and send a reply.

Snap announced the app as an extension of Snapchat across phones, tablets, the web and wearables. Its practical role is closer to quick-reply messaging than to the camera-first Snapchat experience. Snapchat’s announcement details the launch and supported input methods.

Can you respond to a Snap?
Only if “Snap” means a text chat notification. The Apple Watch app does not display the actual photo or video in a Snap, so it cannot let you view or directly respond to that visual content from your wrist.
According to Snapchat Support, the watch experience also does not preview:
- Photo or video Snaps
- Images or videos from Memories or the camera roll
- Voice notes
- Stories
- Spotlight content
You also cannot browse older messages as you would in the iPhone app. The watch shows the new incoming notification rather than providing a complete conversation history.

Launch-era reporting from 9to5Mac also described the initial experience as reply-focused rather than a way to start a new conversation. Snapchat’s current support documentation is clearest about the notification-based workflow, so you should not treat the watch app as a full inbox.
Compatibility requirements
Snapchat Support lists these requirements:
- Apple Watch Series 4 or newer
- watchOS 9 or newer
- A paired iPhone with a compatible, up-to-date Snapchat app
- Snapchat notifications enabled for Apple Watch
The support article lists Snapchat version 13.35 or later, but app minimums can change. Check the current Snapchat App Store listing before troubleshooting an installation or compatibility problem.
How to install and enable Snapchat replies
- Update Snapchat on the paired iPhone.
- Update the Apple Watch to watchOS 9 or later, if the model supports it.
- Install Snapchat from the iPhone’s Watch app or the App Store on the watch.
- On the iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap Notifications.
- Under Mirror iPhone Alerts From, turn on Snapchat.
- Wait for a new Snapchat text-chat notification.
- Tap the notification on the watch, choose Reply, select an input method and send the message.
The notification step matters. The watch app is not intended to reproduce the iPhone app’s full Snapchat inbox; replies begin from a new incoming text-chat alert.

Notification privacy controls
If you do not want message text visible on your wrist, Apple Watch notification settings include Tap to Show Full Notification. This keeps the content concealed until you tap the alert.
To stop Snapchat alerts from appearing on the watch, go to iPhone Watch app → Notifications → Mirror iPhone Alerts From and turn off Snapchat.
Why the Reply button may be missing
A missing Reply control does not necessarily mean the app is malfunctioning. First check the following:

- Snapchat notifications are enabled on the iPhone.
- Snapchat is enabled in Watch app → Notifications → Mirror iPhone Alerts From.
- The watch and iPhone are paired, connected and nearby when testing.
- Both Snapchat and watchOS are updated.
- The watch is a Series 4 or newer model running watchOS 9 or later.
- The alert is a new text-chat notification, not a media-only Snap, Story, Spotlight item or voice note.
Some notification types are unsupported by design, so they will not produce a reply workflow. If setup appears correct, force-close and reopen Snapchat, restart both devices, reinstall Snapchat on the watch and test again with a new text message. Reports of loading or missing-feature problems are anecdotal, not evidence of a confirmed widespread fault.

The app is useful if you regularly receive short Snapchat messages and want to send quick acknowledgements such as “I’m here” without pulling out your iPhone. It suits runners, commuters and anyone who already relies on Apple Watch notifications.

Existing Apple Watch owners should check their model and watchOS before considering an upgrade. The app alone is not a strong reason to buy a newer watch because it does not add Snapchat’s camera, visual-media viewing or full messaging experience. Snapchat+ is also not required for Apple Watch replies; do not subscribe solely to unlock this feature.
The bottom line
Snapchat’s Apple Watch app is best understood as a text-chat notification and quick-reply tool. It adds a useful capability that notification mirroring did not previously provide—replying from the wrist—but it does not let you view, create or manage visual Snaps. For full Snapchat functionality, you still need the iPhone.
