Short answer: Solos is a credible alternative to Meta’s camera-equipped smart glasses if your priority is camera-based visual assistance and access to multiple AI services. But the original headline is now outdated: the current $299 Solos comparison is primarily AirGo V2 versus Meta Glasses, not simply Solos versus Ray-Ban Meta. Solos’ advertised advantages are multimodal AI and model choice; Meta’s are ecosystem integration, styling, distribution, and a broader mature feature set.

First, identify the Solos glasses in the headline
The “ChatGPT smart glasses” story originally referred to Solos’ camera-equipped AirGo Vision. Solos’ current camera-focused products are different:
- AirGo V: A $299 camera-hinge model with still-image capture, open-ear audio, phone connectivity, and AI inquiries. Solos’ product page lists a maximum image resolution of 2048 × 1944 and says video recording is unavailable.
- AirGo V2: The newer 2026 family advertised from $299. Solos says it adds a 16MP stabilized camera, improved directional audio, real-time translation, object recognition, contextual assistance, and access to several AI models through SolosChat 3.0.
- AirGo3 and A5: Audio-first models that should not automatically be treated as camera glasses. Check the exact product listing before buying.
That distinction matters. An audio-only AirGo model is not a substitute for a camera-equipped pair if your main reason for buying is asking an AI assistant about text, objects, or scenes.

What “ChatGPT-powered” means here
Solos’ glasses are not a standalone pair of spectacles with native access to your personal ChatGPT account. The AirGo V product documentation says personal ChatGPT-account login is not supported. Instead, AI features are mediated through the Solos app and SolosChat, which uses OpenAI-powered functions and, in AirGo V2’s launch positioning, can provide access to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek.
In practical terms, you should expect a workflow involving the glasses, the Solos app, a compatible Android or iPhone, Bluetooth, and internet access. The glasses capture or relay information; cloud software and AI services process the request and return an answer through the open-ear speakers. That is different from signing into ChatGPT Plus and having your existing conversations, account history, or subscription automatically follow you to the glasses.

What Solos AirGo V and V2 can do
Camera-based assistance
For AirGo V, Solos documents still-image capture and AI inquiries, but specifically says video recording is unavailable. Its product page describes approximately 16 hours for photo shooting and AI inquiries; that should not be read as 16 hours of continuous camera use or general-purpose battery life.

AirGo V2’s launch materials advertise a 16MP stabilized camera, live video, multimodal AI, object recognition, contextual assistance, and translation. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent test results, and final retail specifications should be checked for the exact configuration.

Meta announced the $299 Meta Glasses collection with EssilorLuxottica in June 2026. The announcement describes 26 styles, prescription compatibility, Meta AI from launch, and an advanced multi-microphone array. Do not call every one of these frames “Ray-Bans” unless the specific model is actually branded Ray-Ban.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display is not a $299 alternative. It starts at $799 with the Neural Band, adds an in-lens display, guided walking navigation, notifications, and visual translations, and is rated by Meta for up to six hours of mixed use. It is an upgrade path for someone who wants a display, not an apples-to-apples AirGo V2 rival.
Where Solos has the clearest advantage
Solos’ most interesting differentiator is not simply the word “ChatGPT.” It is the attempt to make the glasses a gateway to several AI services. That may appeal to buyers who do not want to be tied to one company’s assistant or who specifically want camera-based questions about objects, text, and surroundings.

AirGo V2 may also be relevant to accessibility, developer, and enterprise buyers because Solos has promoted Envision accessibility features, developer tools, and enterprise integrations. Availability, country support, setup requirements, and pricing should be confirmed before treating those as ready-to-use consumer benefits.

Where Meta remains the safer mainstream choice
Meta’s advantage is the complete everyday workflow: phone calls, messaging, voice control, social sharing, and first-party AI tied to a much larger consumer ecosystem. The EssilorLuxottica partnership also gives Meta a stronger path to familiar eyewear styling, prescription options, and mainstream retail support.
Choose Meta if you want the simplest mainstream experience, prefer Ray-Ban styling, or care more about calls and messaging than choosing among AI providers. Verify the exact model and country, because features available on newer Meta products are not automatically present on every Ray-Ban Meta generation.
The subscription and account trap
The $299 hardware price does not necessarily represent the complete cost of ownership. Solos’ app documentation describes free and paid service tiers with different query limits, model access, natural-voice features, translation allowances, history, and standalone-app functions.

The same documentation contains conflicting Premium price references: one table shows Premium at $4.99 and Elite at $12.99, while another section shows Premium at $9.99. Do not treat any one number as definitive without checking the current checkout flow or app-store listing for your country and exact product generation.
Before ordering, confirm:
- What visual-AI functions are included without a subscription
- Whether image queries or voice use are capped
- Which AI models are available on each tier
- Whether translation and conversation history require payment
- Whether the glasses require a phone and internet connection for the functions you want
- Whether AirGo V and AirGo V2 have identical plan benefits
- What happens to cloud-dependent features if Solos changes or discontinues the service
Availability can change the recommendation
As of August 18, 2026, Solos storefront pages showed $299 AirGo V listings but also backorder or unavailable signals for some configurations. AirGo V2 collection pages likewise showed $299 variants with unavailable signals when crawled. A product can be officially launched and still be unavailable in the size, lens treatment, or prescription configuration you need.
Solos says U.S. orders above $199 qualify for free tracked shipping and that U.S. purchases may qualify for free returns within 30 days of delivery. Confirm those terms at checkout, particularly for prescription or customized lenses.
Prescription, fit, and real-world ownership
Solos lists prescription-related options and treatments including UV, blue-light, anti-reflection, photochromic, and polarized lenses on relevant product pages. But the $299 starting price should not be assumed to include prescription lenses, taxes, or every lens treatment.

Privacy is a buying criterion, not a footnote
AirGo V documentation confirms a notification LED, but the cited material does not establish every recording state, whether the indicator can be disabled, where images are stored, how long they are retained, or whether images are sent to Solos’ servers, an AI provider, or both.
Before using camera-equipped glasses around other people, check Solos’ current privacy documentation and the rules of the venue. Ask permission before photographing or analyzing people, private spaces, medical information, or documents. Schools, workplaces, healthcare settings, and private venues may prohibit camera glasses even when their use is otherwise lawful. A visible LED does not by itself make the product privacy-friendly.
Which glasses fit each buyer?
- Traveler: Consider AirGo V2 if translation and visual questions are the priority, but verify language, regional AI availability, connectivity, and stock. Choose Meta if calls, messaging, and a more established mainstream workflow matter more.
- Commuter: Meta is the safer ecosystem choice for phone functions and everyday voice control. Neither product should be assumed to provide a display or fully offline AI.
- Low-vision user: Investigate Solos’ advertised Envision and accessibility integrations, but confirm eligibility, supported country, plan requirements, and actual availability before purchasing.
- Photographer: AirGo V2’s advertised 16MP stabilized camera is the more relevant Solos feature. AirGo V is not the same: its page describes still images and says video recording is unavailable.
- Privacy-sensitive buyer: Wait or choose neither until cloud processing, retention, deletion, and indicator behavior are acceptable to you.
- Prescription wearer: Compare the exact frame, prescription range, lens price, fit, and return terms rather than comparing base prices alone.
- Developer or enterprise buyer: Solos’ promoted developer and enterprise integrations may be attractive, but treat them as a procurement question requiring current documentation and support commitments.
- Display seeker: Skip the $299 comparison. Meta Ray-Ban Display is the relevant Meta category, but its $799 starting price is substantially higher.
Verdict
Solos’ $299 glasses are a genuine Meta alternative, but only after correcting the product names and expectations. AirGo V2 is the more compelling choice for camera-based visual AI and multiple assistant options. Meta’s current glasses are the stronger choice for mainstream ecosystem integration, styling, and everyday communication. Meta Ray-Ban Display is the choice for an actual in-lens display, at a much higher price.
For most buyers, the decision should come down to workflow rather than AI branding. Choose Solos if visual questions and model flexibility outweigh ecosystem maturity—and only after confirming stock, lens compatibility, phone requirements, and subscription terms. If the needed AirGo configuration is unavailable or you expect offline AI, native personal ChatGPT access, reliable continuous video, or a $299 display, wait or buy neither.
