Somalytics unveiled SomaSleep, a prototype eye-tracking sleep mask, at CES in January 2023. It was designed to detect eye movements associated with REM sleep using tiny capacitive sensors made with carbon nanotubes embedded in paper—not to diagnose sleep disorders or replace a full sleep study. Somalytics projected a late-2023 consumer launch at about $199, but public sources available as of August 18, 2026, do not verify that the mask reached retail or remains available.
What was SomaSleep?
SomaSleep was a sleep mask concept from Somalytics, a Seattle-area startup spun out of the University of Washington. The company introduced it at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2023. Sensors positioned near the wearer’s eyes were intended to register eye movement during sleep, including movement associated with REM sleep. GeekWire’s CES report described it as a prototype, not an established clinical device.
The idea was to add an eye-movement signal to the information collected by consumer sleep trackers, which commonly focus on signals such as motion, breathing, or heart rate. SomaSleep was not shown to measure every physiological signal used in a clinical sleep study.
How can a paper-based sensor detect eye movement?
A capacitive sensor creates an electrical field and detects changes when a nearby object disturbs it. In Somalytics’ proposed setup, movement of the eyeball changes the sensor’s electrical response. The sensor is positioned near the eye rather than touching the eyeball, and it does not need a camera to capture the wearer’s face.

The sensor material combined carbon nanotubes with paper. GeekWire reported a manufacturing approach in which nanotubes were embedded in paper, the paper edges were fractured or torn to form a sensitive geometry, and the shaped sensor was encapsulated in polyethylene. The paper is therefore part of a composite sensor—not evidence that the finished component is biodegradable or plastic-free.
Somalytics’ broader sensor platform was reported to include sensors about 1 to 11 millimeters in size and capable of sensing at distances of up to about 20 centimeters, depending on configuration and voltage. Those are platform-level figures, not verified specifications for the SomaSleep mask itself.

What did the eye-tracker research establish?
The research paper “Capacitive Eye Tracker Made of Fractured Carbon Nanotube-Paper Composites for Wearable Applications” describes a prototype using asymmetric electrodes, including a carbon-nanotube paper-composite element and a metal electrode. Its testing addressed eye-like objects, body-charge effects, sensor placement, and human eye movement, including horizontal and vertical gaze directions and monitoring with the eyes closed.

That work supports a limited claim: the sensor approach could detect or track eye movement in prototype testing. It does not, by itself, establish accurate sleep-stage classification during ordinary overnight use. Detecting eye motion and reliably estimating how long someone spent in REM sleep are different tasks.

Why eye movement alone cannot establish a full sleep study
REM sleep is associated with rapid eye movements, but clinical sleep assessment typically draws on several signals, including brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, breathing, heart rate, and body movement. An eye-movement sensor could potentially add useful information to a consumer tracker; it cannot be assumed to reconstruct all sleep stages or diagnose a sleep disorder from that signal alone.
Somalytics said it planned to compare the mask’s data with conventional sleep studies. GeekWire reported that plan in January 2023, but the available public sources do not verify that the comparison was completed or published. The same report said the company did not then plan to pursue FDA clearance. That does not establish that the prototype was unsafe; it does mean readers should not treat it as an FDA-cleared diagnostic device.

Who was behind the mask?
Somalytics was described as a University of Washington spinout developing miniature capacitive sensors made with carbon-nanotube paper composites. The technology was developed by UW mechanical-engineering professor Jae-Hyun Chung with graduate researchers including Zhongjie Qian and Vigneshwar Sakthivelpathi. GeekWire reported that Somalytics had raised $1.9 million in 2022 and had six employees at the time of the CES announcement; those are historical figures, not current company statistics.

What happened to the planned 2023 launch?
At the 2023 announcement, Somalytics projected that SomaSleep would be available to consumers by the end of that year for about $199. The company was seeking a manufacturing partner. It also described roll-to-roll processing and set a goal of producing as many as 10 million sensors annually by the end of 2023. These were launch-era projections, not confirmation of completed manufacturing, retail availability, or the mask’s eventual price.
As of August 18, 2026, the public sources available for this article do not verify a current SomaSleep purchase page, retail listing, price, product-support information, completed validation study, or FDA clearance. Somalytics’ public company description still describes its paper carbon-nanotube capacitive-sensor technology, but that does not establish that SomaSleep is being sold. The evidence does not establish that the mask was canceled or that the company shut down; its current commercial status remains unconfirmed.
