During the 2023 watchOS 10 beta period, some Apple Watch owners could not find or install the update. The likely blockers were eligibility and setup issues—not a confirmed outage affecting all users: watchOS 10 required a Series 4 or newer watch and a paired iPhone running iOS 17 beta, with the correct Apple ID and beta channel selected. This is a historical troubleshooting guide; watchOS 10 was released publicly on September 18, 2023.
First check whether the watch and iPhone were eligible
watchOS 10 beta support began with Apple Watch Series 4. Supported models included Series 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8; Apple Watch SE (first and second generation); and Apple Watch Ultra. Series 3 and earlier could not run watchOS 10, so changing beta settings could not make the update appear. Apple’s watchOS 10 security documentation confirms compatibility with Series 4 and later.
The paired iPhone mattered too. During the beta period, it needed to run iOS 17 beta. Installing or selecting a watch beta while the iPhone remained on iOS 16 would not satisfy that prerequisite. The watchOS beta also had to be selected separately in the Watch app; putting the iPhone on beta software did not automatically install beta software on the watch. Apple’s beta installation guidance and a contemporaneous watchOS 10 installation guide describe the iPhone and Watch app requirements.
Why the beta might not have appeared
“Unable to update” can describe several different problems, and each points to a different fix:

- No Beta Updates menu: The Apple ID may not have been enrolled in a beta program, or the phone may not have recognized the enrollment yet.
- Menu present, but no watchOS 10 option: The iPhone may not have been running iOS 17 beta, the wrong Apple ID may have been in use, or the selected beta channel may not have matched the user’s enrollment.
- Beta listed, but download would not start: Check the connection, storage and pairing, then retry.
- Download completed but installation failed: This is an installation problem rather than a beta-visibility problem; charging, available storage and restarting both devices are relevant checks.
- Watch stuck, showing a red information icon, or in recovery mode: Treat this as a more serious failure. Repeatedly interrupting an installation that is progressing can make matters worse.
The first watchOS 10 public beta became available on July 12, 2023, according to 9to5Mac’s release report. A short wait after enrollment or a new beta release could help if the option had not propagated to the device yet.
How to select the beta in the Watch app
- Enroll the Apple ID used on the iPhone in the intended Apple beta program. The same Apple ID should be used for enrollment and on the device.
- Install iOS 17 beta on the paired iPhone.
- On the iPhone, open Watch and tap My Watch.
- Tap General, then Software Update, then Beta Updates.
- Select watchOS 10 Public Beta or watchOS 10 Developer Beta, as appropriate for the enrollment.
- Return to Software Update and check for the update.
If the beta option was visible but the update was not, turning Beta Updates off and selecting the intended channel again was a reasonable first check. Close and reopen the Watch app if needed. Signing out of the Apple ID was not a necessary first step.

Before installing: charge, connect and make room
- Charge the Apple Watch to at least 50% and leave it on its charger during installation.
- Keep the paired iPhone nearby, connected to Wi-Fi, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.
- Check that the watch and iPhone have enough available storage and that the watch remains paired with the phone.
Apple’s beta installation instructions advise keeping the devices near each other and waiting for the Apple logo and progress bar. Do not assume the watch has failed just because the installation takes time while that progress is visible.

- Recheck eligibility: Confirm the watch is Series 4 or newer and the paired iPhone is on iOS 17 beta.
- Check enrollment and channel: Confirm the Apple ID and whether the intended choice is the public or developer beta.
- Revisit Beta Updates: In Watch → My Watch → General → Software Update → Beta Updates, select the intended channel again if it is available.
- Close and reopen the Watch app, then restart both devices. If the beta was just released or enrollment was just completed, wait briefly and check again.
- Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, charger connection and storage. Keep the iPhone close to the watch while retrying.
- Remove an incomplete update file if a download is stuck: Open Watch → My Watch → General → Storage, locate the downloaded update and delete it, then check for the update again. Apple includes this and restarting both devices in its Apple Watch update troubleshooting guidance.
- If the watch is stuck, try a force restart: Hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, then release when the Apple logo appears. Apple documents this step in its beta installation guidance.
- Contact Apple if recovery mode or a red information icon persists. A failed beta installation may require service; a reset is not a guaranteed way to restore the watch.
Unpairing the watch immediately is not a good first move: it adds backup and setup work and does not address basic eligibility or enrollment mismatches.

Do not install the beta unless you can accept the rollback limitation
Owners could not normally downgrade an Apple Watch from watchOS 10 beta to watchOS 9 themselves. Turning off Beta Updates or removing beta access did not revert an already-installed watchOS beta. If the watch became unusable, Apple service could be needed. This limitation was highlighted in the contemporary installation guidance.
That makes a beta a poor choice for a primary watch that must reliably handle health and activity tracking, work, payments, workouts or safety-related notifications. Beta software can bring instability, battery drain, synchronization problems or features that do not work as expected; needing iOS 17 beta on the paired phone also expands the potential disruption beyond the watch.

Was there a widespread Apple update outage?
The available reporting does not establish a universal Apple server outage or a broad withdrawal of the watchOS 10 beta. Individual owners discussed update problems in a MacRumors forum thread and an Apple Community post, but those reports cannot establish how many users were affected or prove a server-side cause. Eligibility, enrollment, channel selection, timing and installation failures are separate explanations for a missing or unsuccessful update.
What this means now
watchOS 10 was released publicly on September 18, 2023, and Apple’s watchOS 10 release history lists later releases through watchOS 10.6.2. The beta-access issue described here belongs to the 2023 testing period; it is not evidence of a current watchOS 10 beta rollout problem.
