Verdict: The Sony WH-1000XM6 is one of the best all-around premium noise-canceling headphones you can buy. Its adaptive ANC, long rated battery life, capable calls, broad codec support, folding design, and deep app customization make it an especially strong travel and work companion. But “king” needs a qualifier: Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) can be more comfortable and may block more noise in some comparisons. Sony lists the XM6 at a U.S. MSRP of $459.99; it is easiest to recommend when its fit suits you and the price is competitive with discounted older models.
What changed from the WH-1000XM5?
The XM6 keeps Sony’s familiar premium wireless-headphone formula but addresses practical weaknesses in the XM5: the new model folds for storage, updates the headband, and adds a new noise-canceling processor and call-control features. Sony says its HD Noise Canceling Processor QN3 is seven times faster than the QN1 used in the XM5, and that it processes a 12-microphone array in real time. Those are manufacturer claims, not a direct measure of how much better the headphones will sound or cancel noise for every listener.
Sony also says its Adaptive NC Optimizer adjusts cancellation based on external noise, air pressure, and fit, including factors such as glasses and hats. In use, the meaningful result is an exceptionally capable set of headphones for travel and shared workspaces—not a guarantee that every sound will disappear or that the XM6 will outperform Bose in every environment.

If you already own an XM5 and it fits well, the upgrade is most worthwhile when those specific changes solve a problem for you.

How good is the noise cancellation?
The XM6’s ANC is strong enough to make it a leading choice for planes, trains, commuting, and office work. RTINGS describes it as highly effective against airplane engines and commuter chatter. Its independent testing also measured 31.75 hours of battery life with ANC enabled, though that result is a test outcome, not a runtime Sony guarantees in every setup. ANC is not a single score that maps neatly to every listener’s experience. Low, steady rumble is generally easier for ANC to reduce than sudden sounds or speech. Voices, keyboard clicks, traffic, and wind may remain audible to varying degrees, and a poor seal can weaken isolation. Glasses, hair under the cushions, hats, head shape, and movement can all affect the fit and therefore the result.
Comparisons with Bose illustrate why there is no universal winner. What Hi-Fi? gives the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) a slight edge for outright sound-blocking intensity in Quiet mode, while Android Central reports that the Sony cancels slightly more sound at both ends of the frequency spectrum. Those assessments reflect different methods and conditions rather than a guarantee of one result for every noise or wearer. A small lab or editorial advantage will matter less than a secure, comfortable fit.
How do the XM6 sound?
The XM6 has a warm, dynamic presentation with substantial bass and a more open, detailed character than some listeners may expect from a Sony flagship. Vocals and instruments are easy to follow, and the sound has energy for pop, electronic music, and dense mixes. The trade-off is that the bass emphasis can spill into the midrange on busy tracks, while the overall balance may feel warmer or darker than a more neutral headphone.

That distinction is reflected in current reviews. RTINGS notes that Sony’s bass can bleed into the mids in dense mixes compared with Bose; Android Central describes the XM6 as warm and dark against Bose’s more neutral presentation. What Hi-Fi? praises the Sony’s detail, dynamics, precision, and openness. These are listening judgments rather than a claim that one tuning is objectively right for every genre or preference. The Sony Sound Connect app’s equalizer gives you room to adjust the balance if the default bass is too prominent.
LDAC support is useful for compatible Android devices and listening setups that can transmit higher-bitrate Bluetooth audio, but the codec alone does not guarantee an audible improvement. Your phone, operating system, app, settings, and listening conditions all matter. For iPhone users, AAC is the more relevant listed Bluetooth codec. The included 3.5mm analog connection provides another listening option, but do not mistake the USB-C charging port for a USB-C audio input.
Sony also offers app-based sound and spatial features for compatible content. They may add width or immersion for films, but they are optional processing rather than a substitute for the original stereo mix. Try them with the material you actually watch before deciding whether they improve it.
Are they comfortable for long sessions?
Comfort is the XM6’s most important personal-fit caveat. Sony redesigned the headband, but some people may still find the clamp, headband pressure, heat, or earcup depth tiring over a long flight or workday. Earcup shape and ear size matter as much as the headline weight. RTINGS points to Bose’s deeper earcups and comfort as advantages for some users, and TechRadar’s comparison with AirPods Max also treats Sony’s comfort as a mixed result rather than a universal win.
The XM6 weighs 254 g, according to What Hi-Fi? and TechRadar. That is substantially lighter than the AirPods Max, which TechRadar lists at 385 g, but a lighter headset is not automatically the more comfortable one for every head. The folding hinges and hard carrying case make the Sony an appealing travel design. The headphones are not waterproof, so they are a poor choice for substantial sweat or wet-weather use. Treat them as travel and everyday headphones, not as a water-resistant workout pair.
Calls, controls, and Sony’s app
The XM6’s microphone system and call controls are among its practical improvements. Sony attributes better voice pickup and background-noise handling to real-time processing across the 12 microphones. RTINGS highlights expanded controls, including head gestures to accept or decline calls and a shortcut for muting or unmuting the microphone. These features can be useful for calls on a phone or computer, but performance still depends on wind, traffic, the Bluetooth connection, and the meeting app; they are not a guarantee of studio-quality voice in every setting.
Sony Sound Connect is a major part of the experience. It offers a 10-band equalizer, ambient-sound adjustment, adaptive sound-control scenes, touch-control customization, voice settings, multipoint management, and personalization tools. TechRadar and Android Central describe the app as especially feature-rich. The flexibility is valuable, but there is more to configure than on a simpler headset.
Settings worth checking first
- Adjust the EQ: Start with the default sound, then reduce bass or change the mids if vocals and dense arrangements feel crowded.
- Review adaptive sound control: Keep automatic scene changes if they suit your routine; turn them off if the headphones switch behavior unexpectedly.
- Test Speak-to-Chat: This automatic pause behavior can be convenient, but disable it if ordinary conversation or singing triggers it when you do not want it.
- Set touch and voice controls deliberately: Change or disable gestures and voice features that you trigger accidentally.
- Configure multipoint for your devices: It is useful for a phone-and-laptop routine, but confirm that switching behaves as you expect with your own devices.
Battery, charging, and connections
Sony rates the XM6 for up to 30 hours with noise cancellation on. Sony says actual runtime depends on settings, environment, and use, so treat that as a maximum rating rather than a promise for every combination of volume, codec, multipoint, and ANC. RTINGS measured 31.75 hours with ANC enabled in its test; independent test results and manufacturer ratings are different kinds of evidence and will not necessarily match your day-to-day use. Sony lists USB-C charging and quick charging, but the available product information does not establish an exact quick-charge time and playback allowance to rely on here.
The Sony U.S. product page lists the XM6 at a $459.99 MSRP. Sony notes that pricing and promotions may change. The May 2025 launch coverage commonly cited $449, so those figures should not be confused: the former is the retrieved U.S. MSRP, while the latter is a launch-era figure. For wireless listening, the XM6 supports Bluetooth 5.3 and SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3, as listed by What Hi-Fi? and Android Central. Multipoint lets you use two connected devices, useful for switching between a phone and laptop. Codec availability depends on the device, operating system, and application; LDAC is not a universal benefit, and LC3 support likewise depends on compatible hardware and software.
For wired use, the 3.5mm analog connection works with compatible headphone jacks and adapters. The evidence available for this comparison identifies USB-C as a charging connection, not an audio input. That matters if you specifically need digital USB-C audio: Bose’s second-generation QuietComfort Ultra and the current USB-C AirPods Max are stronger fits for that requirement.

Sony WH-1000XM6 vs Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen)
Choose Sony for its broad codec support, detailed app controls, folding design, and very strong all-around mix of ANC, calls, and battery life. Choose Bose if the deeper earcups fit you better, comfort is the deciding factor, you want USB-C audio, or you prefer its more neutral presentation and Immersive Audio. Both are serious noise-canceling options, and available comparisons disagree on which blocks more sound overall. The best choice may be the pair that seals and stays comfortable on your head.
Sony WH-1000XM6 vs Apple AirPods Max
The Sony is lighter, folds more compactly, and has a longer rated ANC battery life: TechRadar lists 254 g and 30 hours for Sony, versus 385 g and 20 hours for AirPods Max. AirPods Max is the more natural pick for someone who prioritizes Apple-device integration, Spatial Audio with head tracking, and Apple’s design. For frequent travel or use across mixed platforms, Sony’s lighter, folding design and longer rating are more practical.
Sony WH-1000XM6 vs WH-1000XM5 and XM4
The XM5 and XM4 become compelling when their actual sale price is substantially below the XM6’s current U.S. MSRP. RTINGS characterizes the XM5 as similar in general sound profile but with less effective ANC, and the XM4 as a budget-oriented alternative. The XM6’s folding redesign, processor, call changes, and top-tier ANC are reasons to pay more only if you will value them. There is no reliable fixed discount threshold: compare the prices available to you and ask whether the differences justify the gap.

If you own an XM5, keep it unless you specifically want the folding design or need the newer ANC or call features. If you are buying your first pair and find a sharply discounted XM5 or XM4, those may be better value when you do not need the latest performance.
Sony WH-1000XM6 vs Focal Bathys
The Focal Bathys is the more relevant alternative for a buyer focused on sound-first listening rather than maximum isolation. RTINGS identifies it as an audiophile-oriented option with more consistent audio performance across users, while Sony is stronger for noise suppression. For flights, transit, and office use, Sony’s ANC is the more direct fit; for prioritizing music listening over adaptive cancellation, consider the Bathys.
Who should buy the Sony WH-1000XM6?
- Frequent flyers and commuters who want very effective adaptive ANC in a folding design.
- Remote workers who need capable call features and multipoint between a phone and computer.

Buy at full price if its combination of strong ANC, folding portability, calls, app features, and fit is exactly what you need. Consider it more readily on sale, especially if the discount narrows the gap with Bose or makes the new model an easier choice over older Sony stock. If a discounted XM5 or XM4 delivers the comfort and features you need, the savings may matter more than the XM6’s improvements.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 earns a place among the strongest premium ANC headphones and is arguably the best all-around choice for buyers who want travel-ready cancellation, capable calls, long rated battery life, codec flexibility, and deep customization in one folding headset. It is not an undisputed noise-canceling champion: Bose remains a compelling rival for isolation and comfort, AirPods Max is stronger for Apple-specific features, and older Sony models can win on value when discounted. The XM6 deserves the crown for versatility, not for being the best fit or best value for every listener.
