Sony’s REON POCKET 5 is a small, neck-worn device that cools or warms the patch of skin it touches. The “shivers” in the headline describe the startling feel of a cool metal plate against the upper back—not a medical effect. It is an unusual personal-comfort gadget, not a neck fan or a wearable air conditioner.
A wearable that sits under your shirt
The Sony REON POCKET 5 is a wearable thermo device: a compact unit held against the upper back or base of the neck by a dedicated neckband. It is designed to sit beneath clothing. An airflow attachment helps move heat away from the device; depending on the shirt and fit, a small opening near the collar may be the only obvious sign it is there.
That arrangement makes it different from a neck fan. A fan circulates air around you; the REON POCKET 5 uses a metal contact plate to change the temperature of the skin beneath it. It can cool or warm that local area, but it does not change the temperature of a room or directly cool your whole body.
Why the cooling can feel startling
In Stuff’s April 23, 2024 hands-on report, the tester described the device as giving them “shivers” and said the contact plate was hard to forget while wearing it. That is a subjective first impression, not evidence of a medical or neurological effect. Direct contact with a suddenly cooled plate feels different from stepping into shade or feeling a breeze, so the novelty itself can be striking. Fit matters: a tight collar, pressure from the unit, sensitivity to cold, or extended contact may make the sensation uncomfortable. Looser, breathable clothing and an intensity that feels comfortable are sensible starting points. Follow Sony’s operating guidance, and stop using it if the contact feels painful or irritating.
How it cools—and why it needs airflow
The device uses a thermoelectric module. In simple terms, electricity moves heat from one side of the module to the other. In cooling mode, the skin-contact side gets cooler while the opposite side must shed heat; the built-in fan and airflow attachment help with that dissipation. In warming mode, the contact surface warms instead.
So “portable air conditioner” is, at best, a loose analogy. Sony says the device does not cool by blowing cold air at the wearer. Its redesigned thermal module and heat-dissipation system are claimed by Sony to provide up to 1.5 times the heat-absorption performance and 1.8 times the operating time of the preceding model, subject to the comparison and usage conditions. Controls, modes and the separate REON POCKET TAG
The REON POCKET app is used to configure and control the device. Sony lists manual cooling across five levels, with a higher Cool Level 5+ available when the unit is powered by USB, and four warming levels. The feature set also includes automatic and smart cooling/warming options, My Mode, Wave Mode, Golf Mode, Auto Start/Stop, Quick Launch and air-volume adjustment. Which modes are available or useful depends on the setup; some smart automatic functions require the separate REON POCKET TAG.
The TAG is an environmental sensor, not part of the cooling plate. It can measure temperature and humidity outside the shirt’s trapped microclimate; Sony’s UK launch material says the updated sensor can also detect direct sunlight. Clip it to a suitable place such as a shirt pocket or backpack, where it can sample the surroundings. This can help automatic control respond to conditions beyond the space beneath your clothing. The Japanese product information lists a CR2032 coin-cell battery and an approximate one-year life, depending on use. The TAG is not essential for basic manual operation.
Sony lists iOS 13 or later and Android 8 or later as platform requirements, but those minimums do not guarantee compatibility with every device. Check Sony’s current app and compatibility information before buying.

Battery life: intensity makes the difference
Sony’s approximate figures show why “all-day” depends on the setting. At the lowest cooling level the estimate is 17 hours; at maximum manual cooling it is four. Warming is listed at four to eight hours. Actual runtime varies with ambient conditions, clothing, selected level and automatic adjustments.

Sony estimates about 100 minutes to charge to 90% and 170 minutes for a full charge over USB-C. Its guidance also lists pauses after continuous operation—eight hours in cooling and one hour in warming—so do not assume it will run indefinitely without interruption. What wearing it is—and is not—like
The unit weighs about 116g on its own; Sony lists around 160g with the neckband and long airflow attachment (the UK page also lists about 153g with the short attachment). The main unit measures approximately 55 × 23 × 117mm. The neckband is intended to hold it in place, but comfort and visibility will depend on neck and shoulder shape, collar fit and whether a backpack or clothing obstructs the vent. It can be discreet under a shirt, but it is not guaranteed to be invisible.

The original hands-on trial took place in relatively mild temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius. That is useful for understanding the odd sensation and basic wearability, but it does not establish how well the device performs in a heatwave or freezing weather. It is intended for localized comfort during activities such as commuting, daily outings, walking or golf—not strenuous exercise or prolonged exposure to dangerous temperatures.
Sony gives an operating-temperature range of 5°C to 40°C and advises breathable, loose-fitting clothing. The device is not waterproof: Sony describes moisture-resistant sealing but explicitly warns against treating it as waterproof, including exposure to rain or snow. Sweat, wet clothing and blocked airflow are practical concerns. A backpack pressing over the exhaust path or a tight collar can also undermine comfort or heat dissipation.

The REON POCKET 5 makes most sense for someone who wants hands-free, localized temperature adjustment and dislikes carrying a fan—perhaps a commuter moving between hot streets and air-conditioned transport, an office worker without control over the thermostat, or someone walking or golfing in suitable conditions. Its warming mode also gives it a use beyond summer.

It is a poor choice if you expect whole-body cooling, need reliable equipment for wet weather, dislike a device touching your upper back, or want the least expensive way to feel cooler. A basic fan or cooling towel costs less; ordinary layers are simpler for cold weather. The premium is for a compact, wearable contact-based system and its heating/cooling controls, not for a dramatic substitute for air conditioning.
Most importantly, it is not medical equipment and does not prevent heat exhaustion or heatstroke. In extreme heat, use appropriate shade, hydration and cooling, and follow public-health guidance; do not rely on a small contact plate as protection.
Price and availability depend on the market
The REON POCKET 5 launched in the UK in 2024 at about £139 with the REON POCKET TAG. That is historical launch pricing, not today’s price. Sony’s UK store listed the sensing kit at £149 when checked in August 2026; price and stock can change. In Japan, Sony’s purchase page listed ¥17,600 for a main-unit-and-neckband configuration and ¥19,800 for a bundle with the TAG. These regional prices and configurations are not interchangeable, and Japanese availability does not establish UK or US stock, warranty or support.
The REON POCKET 5 is also no longer necessarily the newest product in Sony’s wider line: Sony’s Japanese store lists newer Pro-branded REON POCKET products. Check the official local Sony store for the model, bundle, warranty and availability in your country rather than assuming a Japanese listing applies elsewhere. Verdict
The “shivers” are the most understandable part of the REON POCKET 5: pressing a temperature-changing plate against your upper back is an unmistakably strange sensation. Whether that strangeness is worth paying for depends on your tolerance for the contact and how much you value discreet, localized comfort. For commuters and light-outdoor users who accept the fit, battery and weather limits, it is a clever alternative to a neck fan. For anyone expecting whole-body relief or protection from extreme temperatures, it is the wrong tool.
