Samsung Health estimates steps from movement detected by your phone, Galaxy Watch, or compatible wearable. The app is useful for daily goals and activity trends, but its number is not a manually verified tally. The result can change with device placement, arm movement, walking style, synchronization, and whether you are viewing phone-only or combined data.
A phone and watch record steps separately. Samsung Health can display the phone’s count, a connected device’s count, or an All steps total that combines sources. That setting explains many apparent discrepancies and suspected cases of double counting.
What Samsung Health is actually measuring
Samsung Health’s ordinary step tracker uses an acceleration sensor—an accelerometer—to detect changes in movement. Software looks for patterns that resemble walking, estimates the number of steps, and uses the result to calculate related metrics such as distance.
It does not use GPS to measure every ordinary step. GPS is more relevant when you start a location-based walking or running workout and want route or distance information. Daily step tracking can run automatically in the background when the phone is carried; you do not need to start a walking workout for normal steps to be recorded. See Samsung’s explanation of Samsung Health.

Distance is also an estimate. It is inferred from the step count and stride length rather than measured like a tape measure for every step. A manually started walking or running workout is a separate feature that can add workout duration, route, pace, and other exercise information.
Phone, Galaxy Watch, and band: what changes?
| Factor | Phone | Galaxy Watch or Fit-style wearable |
|---|---|---|
| Extra purchase | No | Yes |
| When it records | When carried or moved sufficiently | When worn and able to detect wrist movement |
| Works when the phone is left behind | No | Usually, depending on the device, activity, and later synchronization |
| Main limitation | Phone placement and leaving it behind | Limited wrist movement or a loose fit |
| Best suited to | Low-cost personal trend tracking | Convenient all-day or phone-free wearable tracking |
A phone can count steps in a pocket, purse, backpack, or hand, but it cannot record walking that happens while it is sitting on a desk or at home. A watch stays on the wrist, so it can capture activity when the phone is in a bag, locker, or elsewhere.
That does not make a watch automatically more accurate. Wrist tracking can miss steps when the arm is held still, and some repetitive wrist movements can look like walking to the algorithm. Samsung specifically warns that activities such as pushing a lawnmower or another object may produce a lower-than-expected watch count because the wrist is not moving normally.
How to view and configure steps
View steps on a Samsung phone
- Open Samsung Health.
- Tap Home.
- Tap the Steps widget.
- View today’s total, or tap the dates at the top to inspect previous days.
- Open the three-dot More options menu for additional controls.
You can also add a shortcut to the phone’s home screen: Home screen → Widgets → Health → Steps → Add. Labels and layout may vary slightly by phone and Samsung Health version.
View steps on a Galaxy Watch
From the watch’s home screen, swipe left until Add widget or Add tiles appears, tap the plus sign, and add Steps. You can also open Samsung Health on the watch and tap Steps. The exact wording depends on the watch model and software.

Set a daily step target
- Open Samsung Health and tap Steps.
- Tap the three-dot More options menu.
- Choose Set target or Target.
- Enter your desired daily goal.
Samsung does not require one universal target. Ten thousand steps is not a medically necessary threshold. A realistic baseline followed by gradual increases is generally more useful than abandoning a goal because it is too ambitious. If you have a medical condition, mobility limitation, or exercise restriction, follow advice from a qualified professional.
Why your phone and watch show different totals
Phone and watch sensors record separately. Samsung Health can then show those records independently or combine them. To choose what appears in the app:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Samsung Health on your phone.
- Tap Steps.
- Tap the three-dot More options menu.
- Tap Select step data to show.
- Choose All steps for the combined total, or Mobile phone for the phone’s count.
All steps combines the phone and connected devices. It does not mean the phone and watch have become one sensor; they continue recording separately behind the scenes. Comparing the watch’s own number with the app’s combined number can therefore look like double counting even when Samsung Health is intentionally aggregating both sources.
Compare like with like: the watch widget with watch-specific data, the phone-only setting with the phone’s count, and All steps with the combined daily total. Check this setting before disabling permissions or removing a device.
Is Samsung Health accurate?
The practical answer is: accurate enough for trends, not precise enough to treat as a laboratory pedometer. It can help you compare your activity from one day to the next, maintain a goal, and notice whether you are becoming more or less active. It should not be used as a clinical-grade measurement or a precise audit of every individual step.

A 2024-published free-living study compared a Galaxy Watch 4 and Samsung smartphone applications with ActivPAL reference measurements. The tested Galaxy Watch 4 had a mean absolute percentage error of 10.5%, while the smartphone-application group had an error of 29.6%. Those figures apply to the tested devices and study conditions, not automatically to every current Samsung phone, watch, software version, gait, or carrying position. Read the Galaxy Watch 4 and smartphone validity study for the study’s methods and limitations.
Earlier research on Samsung’s S Health app found that phone placement did not significantly change accuracy during self-selected walking, while treadmill-running conditions produced more problematic estimates in some tested positions. That work used an older app version, so it is best treated as evidence of possible failure modes rather than a current benchmark. See the Samsung S Health phone-placement study.
When Samsung Health may miss steps
- Your arm is stationary: Holding a hand still while walking can reduce watch detection.
- You are pushing something: Strollers, shopping carts, lawnmowers, and similar objects can prevent normal wrist movement.
- The phone is elsewhere: A phone left behind cannot record your walking.
- The phone is poorly positioned: A location that limits movement may affect detection.
- The watch is loose or unusually positioned: Poor contact and atypical wear can affect the movement signal.
- You walk slowly or irregularly: Short, uneven, or assisted steps are harder for a general-purpose algorithm to classify.
- You use crutches, trekking poles, or mobility aids: Your movement pattern may not resemble the pattern the tracker expects.
- You use a treadmill: Phone placement, arm motion, and actual belt movement can diverge, especially during faster walking or running.
For stroller or cart walking, carrying the phone in a location where it can move with you may help, but no workaround guarantees a complete count. If the number matters for a specific health or rehabilitation plan, use the measurement method recommended by your clinician.
When it may overcount
Repetitive typing, gesturing, household chores, vehicle vibration, or equipment movement may produce motion that resembles walking. Samsung confirms that wearable step totals are estimates, but it does not publish a complete list of every movement that can create false positives.
Also rule out a display problem before blaming the sensor. A combined All steps total, different counting windows, delayed synchronization, or an incorrectly associated device can make the number look too high. In a shared-device situation, check which phone, watch, and Samsung account are connected.

Why step totals or synchronization can be delayed
A slight delay can be normal. Samsung’s support guidance associates prolonged delays with issues such as low GPS signal or a poor network connection, although GPS is not the basis for every ordinary step. A delay does not automatically mean the sensor has failed.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Wait briefly and move to an area with better connectivity if appropriate.
- Confirm that the phone and watch are connected.
- Check whether Samsung Health is showing All steps or Mobile phone.
- Update Samsung Health and the phone or watch software.
- Close and reopen Samsung Health.
- Restart the phone or watch if synchronization remains stalled.
- Re-pair the wearable only as a later step, because it is more disruptive.
Keep the device software and Samsung Health updated for best performance. Re-pairing will not correct a normal measurement limitation such as pushing a cart with a stationary wrist.

Buy nothing: use the phone
Phone-only Samsung Health is the best choice if you already carry your phone most of the day and only need a daily activity gauge. It costs nothing extra and avoids charging, pairing, and compatibility concerns. Its weakness is obvious: activity performed without the phone will not be recorded.
Choose a Galaxy Fit-style band
A band is a sensible middle ground for lightweight wrist tracking, basic exercise information, notifications, and lower cost. Galaxy Fit3 launched in the U.S. at $59.99 in January 2025, but that is a historical launch price—not a guaranteed September 2026 checkout price. Check the current Galaxy Fit product page for availability and pricing.
A band still estimates steps and can miss activity when wrist movement is limited. It is a poor fit if you want full smartwatch apps, LTE, or advanced training functions.

Choose a Galaxy Watch
A Galaxy Watch makes more sense when step tracking is only one part of the purchase. It adds a visible wrist interface, workout controls, notifications, and broader health and fitness features. It is also more convenient when you want to leave your phone behind during some activities.
The trade-offs are higher cost, more charging, more setup, and the same fundamental wrist-motion limitations. U.S. MSRP signals from Samsung’s June 2026 price sheet were $249.99 for the Bluetooth 40-mm Galaxy Watch7 and $279.99 for the 44-mm model; the Galaxy Watch8 Bluetooth models were listed at $349.99 and $379.99. These are MSRP signals, not guaranteed sale prices. Samsung says prices can change without notice.
The Watch8 Classic was listed at $499.99 Bluetooth, while the Watch Ultra was listed at $649.99 for the specified LTE configurations. Those premium designs and outdoor features are difficult to justify if ordinary step counting is your only requirement. Visit the Galaxy Watch7, Galaxy Watch8, Galaxy Watch8 Classic, and Galaxy Watch Ultra pages for current specifications and prices.

Samsung says core Samsung Health features, including the pedometer and activity tracker, work with Samsung and other Android phones, although availability varies by device and operating system. The Android Samsung Health listing requires Android 10 or later; the Wear OS Samsung Health listing requires Wear OS 2.0 and Android 11 or later. Verify compatibility for the exact phone and wearable before buying.
Some Samsung Health Monitor functions—including ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, and sleep-apnea features—are restricted to Samsung phones. Do not assume that every Galaxy Watch feature works identically on a Pixel, OnePlus, or another Android phone. iPhone availability and Galaxy wearable compatibility are separate questions; do not assume the Android experience carries over to iOS. See Samsung’s compatibility and Samsung Health Monitor guidance.
Garmin, Fitbit, and Google’s Pixel Watch ecosystem are credible alternatives if you prioritize battery life, training tools, cross-platform support, or a different data ecosystem. No brand should be declared universally more accurate without a comparable test using the same conditions and reference instrument.
Bottom line
Samsung Health is best understood as a consistent personal activity gauge, not a perfect step counter. Its estimates are most useful for motivation, comparisons, and long-term trends. If your total looks wrong, first check whether Samsung Health is displaying All steps or phone-only data, then consider device placement, arm movement, synchronization, and walking conditions. A Galaxy wearable is an optional convenience—not a requirement for Samsung Health’s basic step tracking.
