The short answer: the October 2025 dispute did not produce a general Garmin-to-Strava shutdown. Strava agreed to accommodate Garmin’s attribution requirements, then voluntarily dismissed its lawsuit against Garmin without prejudice. Garmin users could continue sending activities to Strava, although Garmin branding was expected to become more visible. That does not prove the broader commercial or patent dispute was permanently settled, and it does not independently verify every integration detail in 2026.
What happened between Strava and Garmin?
The dispute had three connected parts: Garmin introduced new attribution requirements for applications displaying Garmin-originated data; Strava objected to the scope of those requirements; and Strava separately filed a patent and contract lawsuit against Garmin.
- July 1, 2025: Garmin announced developer guidelines affecting applications that use Garmin-originated data.
- September 30, 2025: Strava filed a case in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.
- October 2, 2025: Strava publicly linked the dispute to Garmin’s branding requirements and said API access could be affected if partners did not comply by November 1.
- October 11–17, 2025: Strava told developers it would implement Garmin attribution while prioritizing uninterrupted connectivity.
- October 21, 2025: Strava voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice.
- October 22, 2025: The case was reported as closed.
Contemporaneous reporting described Strava’s position as a practical compromise: it disagreed with the extent of Garmin’s branding demands but would comply to preserve the Garmin connection. Strava also said attribution should be as unobtrusive as possible and indicated it would apply comparable attribution principles to other device partners. Cycling Weekly reported on Strava’s developer-facing explanation.
Was it actually a branding lawsuit?
No. “Branding lawsuit” is convenient shorthand, but it is legally imprecise.

The complaint alleged that Garmin infringed three Strava patents and breached a 2015 Master Cooperation Agreement. The patents covered technology associated with GPS segments, user-preference activity maps, route generation and related activity data. Strava also alleged that Garmin expanded the use of Strava segment technology and incorporated disputed functionality into Garmin Connect and Garmin devices.
Those were Strava’s allegations, not findings by a court. The complaint and case details are available through the filed complaint. Reporting also summarized the patent and contract claims in Bloomberg Law.
What did Garmin’s attribution rules mean for users?
Garmin’s requirements concerned how Garmin-sourced data was identified when displayed through partner applications or passed to downstream services. In practical terms, a run or ride recorded on a Garmin watch or cycling computer could carry more prominent Garmin attribution in relevant activity pages, posts, charts, images, sharing cards or other displays.

The available reporting does not establish one universal logo position, size or wording for every Strava surface. The requirement could also affect third-party applications using Garmin-originated data through an API differently from the ordinary experience of viewing your own activity.
Strava characterized the requirements as extensive and said it wanted to keep the branding unobtrusive. DC Rainmaker’s account describes the API and attribution dispute, including the November 1, 2025 compliance deadline.
Did Strava accuse Garmin of copying its technology?
Strava alleged that Garmin improperly used or expanded functionality connected with Strava Segments, leaderboards, popularity-based routing and heatmap-style activity data. It also alleged violations of contractual restrictions in the 2015 cooperation agreement.

Strava asked for broad relief, including an injunction against allegedly infringing functionality and sales of Garmin hardware containing it. That created a potential risk for parts of Garmin’s watch and cycling-computer business, but no Garmin product was banned, recalled or declared unlawful. The case ended before a court ruled on the merits.

It means the lawsuit was ended without a decision on whether Garmin infringed Strava’s patents or breached the agreement.
A dismissal with prejudice ordinarily prevents the same claims from being brought again. A dismissal without prejudice generally leaves more legal room for related claims to be pursued later, subject to applicable deadlines, procedural rules and any later agreement between the parties.

So it is inaccurate to say that Strava “lost” the lawsuit, that Garmin was found to have won, or that the dispute was definitively settled. Bloomberg Law reported on the voluntary dismissal and its procedural status.

According to the October 2025 reporting, yes: Strava intended to keep Garmin connectivity live, and Garmin activities were expected to continue uploading to Strava. Users therefore did not need to replace a Garmin watch or cycling computer solely because of the dispute.

However, the lawsuit’s dismissal itself was not a guarantee that every future Garmin Connect, Strava or API configuration would remain unchanged. Integrations can be affected independently by authorization, app updates, API policies, outages or account-specific problems. The reviewed sources support continued connectivity at the time; they do not independently verify every feature or endpoint as of 2026.

What Garmin users should do
- Do not change devices solely because of the 2025 case. The dispute did not result in the reported general shutdown of Garmin uploads.
- Expect attribution to matter more. Garmin-originated activities may be identified more visibly in relevant Strava or third-party displays.
- Keep your original records. Garmin Connect remains the primary activity hub for Garmin devices, and exporting important files is sensible data hygiene.
- If an upload fails, troubleshoot the connection. Confirm the activity reached Garmin Connect, check the Garmin–Strava authorization, review connected-app permissions and check for a service outage.
- Do not assume the lawsuit deleted historical activities. The reporting concerned future connectivity and attribution, not a deletion of existing Strava records.
What the dispute says about platform dependence
This was not merely a disagreement over a logo. It highlighted who controls fitness-data access, who receives attribution, how APIs can shape partner relationships and how closely Garmin’s software increasingly overlaps with Strava’s social and training features.
For most users, staying with Garmin and Strava remains the lowest-switching-cost option. A Garmin user who is satisfied with Garmin Connect can also treat Strava as an optional social or analysis service. Moving to another ecosystem such as COROS, Wahoo or Apple Watch may reduce dependence on a particular relationship, but it also means evaluating sensor support, battery life, training tools, historical-data migration and current Strava compatibility. What remains unresolved?
The dismissal did not answer whether Garmin’s disputed features infringed Strava’s patents, whether the 2015 agreement was breached, or whether the companies reached a permanent private understanding. It also did not freeze future API, licensing or branding policies.
The clearest user-facing conclusion is narrower: the October 2025 confrontation did not, according to contemporaneous reporting, cut off ordinary Garmin-to-Strava uploads. Strava accepted Garmin attribution requirements and dismissed its case without prejudice. Any current claim about every Garmin–Strava feature should still be checked against the latest first-party support documentation.
