Swave Photonics announced a €27 million Series A—about $28.27 million—in January 2025 to advance its Holographic eXtended Reality (HXR) display platform for augmented-reality glasses and heads-up displays. The company is developing display technology for device makers, not launching a consumer pair of smartglasses. Its technical specifications are largely company claims and design targets, not verified specifications for a product on sale.

What Swave raised and who invested

The Belgian display-technology company announced the Series A on January 3, 2025. The round was co-led by imec.xpand and SFPIM Relaunch, with participation from the EIC Fund, IAG Capital Partners and Murata Electronics North America. Existing investors Qbic Fund, PMV, imec and Luminate also participated. Swave said it had previously raised a €10 million seed round in 2023. Swave’s funding announcement states the round in euros and gives the approximate dollar conversion; $28.3 million is a rounded figure.

Swave was founded in 2022 as a spinout of Belgian semiconductor and nanotechnology research organization imec. It develops display components and systems for other companies to integrate. Its stated applications include AR smartglasses, automotive and aerospace heads-up displays, glasses-free 3D displays and spatial-computing systems. The company lists operations in Leuven, Belgium, and Redmond, Washington.

What “holographic” means here

HXR stands for Holographic eXtended Reality. Swave describes it as a CMOS-based spatial light modulator that uses very small pixels and phase-change material to control light and create holographic imagery. Its DynamicDepth approach is intended to present image information at different focal depths, rather than simply placing a conventional flat virtual image at one fixed distance. Swave’s HXR overview and spatial-computing materials describe that goal.

XREAL xbx a01+ AR Glasses, 147'' Big-Screen Display for Movies & Gaming
  • YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
  • ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
  • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
  • LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

That use of “holographic” does not mean a free-floating image visible from every direction. It is not the same as a Pepper’s Ghost reflection, conventional stereoscopic images sent separately to each eye, or a typical waveguide display that presents a virtual image at a limited focal distance. The claim is that controlled light can provide depth cues in an AR viewing system. The quality and practical effect of those cues depend on the full optical and computational system, and the cited material does not independently verify a consumer-ready implementation.

Why this could matter for AR glasses

AR glasses have to balance field of view, brightness, eyebox, weight, power use, heat, image quality and appearance in a very small form. An eyebox is the region behind the lens where the wearer can see the full image; making it generous can make an optical system larger or more demanding. A fixed focal plane can also contribute to vergence-accommodation conflict: the eyes may converge on a virtual object at one apparent depth while accommodating at another. A depth-capable display is intended to address that mismatch, but it does not by itself prove that a device will be comfortable or eliminate eye strain.

  • 【BOLDEST: NEXT-LEVEL CLARITY & AUDIO — 1250 Nits + HARMAN AudioEFX】1250 nits of peak brightness — over 2× brighter than the competition — means you can actually see your screen outdoors, in sunlight, no squinting required. Pair that with HARMAN AudioEFX: deeper bass, wider soundstage, and crystal-clear highs tuned by the world's leading audio engineers. Other XR glasses make you choose between picture and sound. The Beast gives you both — cranked to eleven.

Swave argues that sub-300-nanometer pixels could support a wide diffraction angle and a simpler optical architecture, potentially reducing reliance on conventional waveguides, varifocal lenses and bulky assemblies. A CMOS approach could also draw on established semiconductor manufacturing processes. Those are potential advantages, not guaranteed outcomes: brightness, efficiency, heat, compute requirements, optical integration, reliability and manufacturing yield all have to work together. Improving field of view, for example, can make brightness, power or eyebox constraints harder to manage.

Targets are not shipping-product specifications

Swave’s white paper gives an illustrative AR system design, not a published specification sheet for commercially available glasses. Its example lists a 280-nanometer spatial-light-modulator pixel size, a 16,000 × 16,000 pixel modulator on an approximately 5 × 5 mm active area, an approximately 10 × 10 mm eyebox, 45-degree diagonal field of view, a 2,400 × 1,400 addressable image, up to about 60 pixels per degree, and image depth from infinity to 0.5 meters. These are figures from a proposed system using an HXR microdisplay and optical components described in the paper as known and low-cost; they should not be read as measurements from retail smartglasses. Development kits and commercial status

In April 2024, Swave said it was taking orders for HXR development kits from device manufacturers and expected to deliver them in the second half of that year. This describes a business-to-business development route, not a consumer launch. The available cited information does not establish current kit pricing, public ordering availability, or independently verified shipping status.

The January financing was intended to advance HXR and move toward products for AR glasses and heads-up displays. Swave’s claims about compactness, prescription compatibility, full-color imagery, all-day battery potential or reduced optical complexity should be understood as design aims unless tied to measured product data. The sources do not disclose brightness, power draw, refresh rate, latency, compute needs, contrast, color gamut, full-system eyebox performance, manufacturing yield, or an announced customer product using HXR.

The practical next steps for a platform like HXR are chip and development-kit maturation, evaluation by device makers, optical and software integration, and manufacturing qualification. The funding gives Swave more runway to pursue those milestones; it does not show that they have all been completed or establish a launch date.
