The TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5 x New Balance Edition has credible running hardware and six New Balance training plans, but its defining advantages are luxury-watch materials, design and exclusivity—not a proven edge over specialist running watches. At $1,650 in the U.S., it makes the most sense for someone who wants a TAG Heuer for everyday wear that can also handle regular runs, and is willing to charge it frequently.
This is a product-focused assessment of the published specifications and claims, not a first-person run test. GPS accuracy, heart-rate performance, the behavior of the training plans and real-world battery life therefore remain unverified.
What the New Balance Edition is—and what it isn’t
This is the 40 mm TAG Heuer Connected Calibre E5 reference SBT8082.EB0394, made in a limited run of 3,000 pieces. The U.S. product page lists it for $1,650; price and availability vary by market and can change. TAG Heuer’s U.S. product page
The collaboration adds New Balance styling, dedicated watch faces and six training plans to the broader Calibre E5 platform. It does not make New Balance the watchmaker or establish that the sensor hardware is different from other E5 models. The watch runs TAG Heuer OS, TAG Heuer’s proprietary interface.

TAG Heuer and New Balance announced the watch alongside the FuelCell SuperComp Elite v5 running shoe in October 2025. The partnership gives the watch a running identity, but the shoe collaboration is context—not evidence that the watch is a better training tool. New Balance’s announcement

One specification needs particular caution: New Balance’s announcement gives a different display size and resolution—1.39 inches and 454 × 454—and describes dual-band GNSS. Those figures conflict with the current U.S. product page, which lists a 1.2-inch, 390 × 390 display and does not establish dual-band GNSS in its specifications. Design: premium materials, with a thick case
The black DLC-coated titanium case, domed sapphire crystal and matching titanium details give this E5 a more distinctive, watch-like character than a typical plastic sports watch. A New Balance logo is engraved at six o’clock, and the dial includes a New Balance-colored deadzone scale. The two-material rubber strap has a green embroidered logo and a textile insert inspired by running shoes. TAG Heuer also describes an additional interchangeable strap in the package.

More importantly for fit, the 40 mm diameter comes with a substantial 14.8 mm thickness. That smaller diameter may suit wrists that find a 45 mm smartwatch too broad, but it does not guarantee a low-profile feel: the case could feel tall under a snug cuff or during wrist movement. Comfort, sleeve clearance and strap security during sweaty runs need to be judged on the wearer, rather than inferred from the collaboration imagery.
The 1.2-inch OLED, sapphire cover, crown and mechanical buttons provide the ingredients for a readable and controllable sports watch. The listed specifications alone cannot establish how easy the screen is to read in direct sun, whether haptics cut through outdoor noise, or how reliably controls work with sweaty fingers. Those are practical questions worth checking before buying, especially at this price.
Running features: promising foundations, limited public detail
The hardware list is credible for a smartwatch used to record runs. TAG Heuer lists a heart-rate sensor, GNSS, altimeter, compass, accelerometer and gyroscope, alongside Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3. The New Balance announcement names GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, QZSS and Galileo, and calls the positioning system dual-band. That dual-band detail should be treated as an announcement claim, not an independently established accuracy result.
The collaboration’s clearest running-specific additions are six New Balance training plans and dedicated watch faces. The available product information does not explain the plans’ duration, whether they adapt to performance, how workouts are scheduled or edited, or whether runs can be exported to third-party services. It also does not fully document structured intervals, pace targets, lap controls, auto-pause, cadence or stride metrics, mapping, or the depth of post-run analysis. Do not assume these features are present simply because the watch is marketed to runners.

Nor do sensor names prove tracking quality. GNSS can behave differently on an open road, under tree cover, beside tall buildings or on an indoor treadmill; wrist-based heart rate can lag during hard intervals or be affected by fit and movement. The evidence here does not include a comparison against a trusted reference device, so it cannot support a claim of superior GPS or heart-rate accuracy. If those measurements drive your training, look for a test of the exact route conditions and software version you care about.
The watch’s sports positioning is therefore real but bounded: it has the core sensors and branded training content for running, while the public specifications do not establish the advanced analytics, navigation tools or broad sports-platform support that some serious runners expect.
Battery life is the most obvious compromise
TAG Heuer quotes 1.5 days at full performance, or up to two days in Low Power mode, from a 300 mAh battery. It quotes 90 minutes for a full charge under specified conditions. These are manufacturer figures, not an independent endurance result, and actual use depends on settings, GPS, notifications, calls, temperature and software.
New Balance’s announcement gives a more demanding sport-use figure of approximately 12 hours in running mode and says a 30-minute charge can add a day of battery. Those claims are useful context, but they are not independently verified measurements. “Up to two days” should not be read as two days of continuous GPS recording; it refers to a different usage mode.
In practical terms, a frequent runner may need to charge daily or every other day, depending on use. That can complicate overnight sleep tracking: either wear the watch to bed and find another time to charge it, or accept gaps in sleep data. A long race, ultramarathon, extended hike or travel weekend is a less comfortable match than it would be for a sports-first watch designed around long endurance. A short top-up before a run may help, but the cited charging claim is not a substitute for a measured test.
Low Power mode may extend time between charges by reducing or disabling functions. The available specifications do not spell out exactly which features change, so check the settings and documentation for the installed software rather than assuming the mode preserves the full running experience.
TAG Heuer OS, phone compatibility and wellness
TAG Heuer describes TAG Heuer OS as its own in-house user experience. The watch combines touch controls with a crown and buttons; the product materials also describe a microphone and speaker, calls from the watch, voice-assistant access and widgets. These are smartwatch conveniences, but they do not make TAG Heuer OS equivalent to watchOS, Wear OS or Garmin’s platform. The supplied information does not establish access to their full app ecosystems.

The watch is listed as compatible with iOS 18 or later and Android 13 or later, with Bluetooth 5.3 and MFi compatibility. Compatibility does not prove that every feature behaves identically on both operating systems. In particular, MFi signals iPhone-oriented compatibility but is not evidence that every Apple Watch function is supported. Buyers should confirm that the phone they use and the features they rely on are supported by the current TAG Heuer app and software.
Advertised wellness features include heart-rate tracking, sleep tracking, SpO₂, heart-rate variability, steps, calories, active time and wellness dashboards. The available information does not establish whether SpO₂ is continuous, spot-based or limited to particular conditions, nor whether HRV feeds into a useful recovery or readiness score. Sleep tracking availability may also differ by software build or region; a localized TAG Heuer page previously indicated that the feature would arrive later in the product cycle. Check the installed version and local feature availability rather than treating every advertised function as active everywhere.

The stated rating is 50 m water resistance, not “waterproof.” It is a useful rating for ordinary exposure, but follow TAG Heuer’s care guidance before swimming or exposing the watch to water. A depth rating is not a guarantee for diving or high-pressure water. Salt water, chlorine, heat, soap and impacts can also put stress on seals or finishes. DLC coating can show wear over time; that is a general possibility, not a reported defect on this edition.
Is the $1,650 price justified?
As a running watch, the price is difficult to justify on the published training specifications alone. The battery claim is modest for endurance use, and the available information does not show a clear advantage in analytics, route tools or sports-app compatibility over specialist running-watch categories such as Garmin Forerunner, COROS Pace or Apex, Polar and Suunto. Those are comparison categories, not a model-by-model ranking.

The luxury case is different. The buyer is paying for TAG Heuer’s design language, titanium and sapphire construction, finishing, the New Balance-specific details, an extra strap and limited-edition status. Those qualities may be worth the premium to a TAG Heuer owner or someone who wants one polished-looking watch for work and regular exercise. They do not translate automatically into better pace data or longer training sessions.
If the New Balance branding is the main draw, remember that the edition’s documented distinction is primarily its design and software package; the public evidence does not show a fundamentally different sensor platform. And if you like the E5 but not the collaboration treatment, TAG Heuer also offers standard Calibre E5 models in 40 mm and 45 mm configurations. Who should buy it?
- Consider it if you want a 40 mm luxury smartwatch, value TAG Heuer materials and design, and want running functions plus New Balance plans in the same device.
- It may suit a recreational runner whose training needs are covered by guided plans and basic run tracking, provided frequent charging is acceptable.
- Think twice if you prioritize marathon or ultramarathon endurance, maps, detailed training load and recovery analytics, race-focused tools, or a broad sports-app ecosystem.
- It is a poor fit if you want a low-maintenance watch that lasts many days between charges, need medical-grade monitoring, or are buying primarily for New Balance branding without valuing the TAG Heuer luxury proposition.
For an iPhone user who mainly wants broad smartwatch apps, an Apple Watch is a more natural category to investigate. For training depth and endurance, compare sports-first options from Garmin, COROS, Polar or Suunto. The right choice depends on those priorities; the published information here is not enough for a precise model-by-model performance verdict.
