The TAG Heuer Connected x Super Mario Limited Edition is a genuine 2021 collaboration between TAG Heuer and Nintendo, limited to 2,000 watches. It pairs a 45mm steel Connected smartwatch with Mario-themed details, faces and activity animations. Its appeal is strongest as a luxury collectible; as a smartwatch in 2026, its one-day battery claim, aging Wear OS setup and uncertain recovery of the Mario content call for caution.
This is the original 2021 reference, SBG8A13.EB0238—not a review of a later Connected Calibre E4 model. The evidence here supports a product assessment, not a claim of personal handling or measured performance.

What the limited edition is—and is not
Announced in July 2021 and made available from July 15 in selected markets, the watch was a TAG Heuer Connected collaboration with Nintendo. Nintendo and TAG Heuer announced a run of 2,000. Its original U.S. launch price was $2,150. Those are historical launch details, not a statement about current resale value or official availability. Nintendo’s announcement describes the partnership and limited run; contemporary coverage reported the U.S. price.
It is a TAG Heuer smartwatch with a Super Mario treatment, not a Nintendo-made watch or a device for playing Mario games. The collaboration is expressed through the case, straps, packaging and software. The Mario elements add character and collectibility, but do not turn the watch into a more capable fitness tracker or a different class of smartwatch.

Design, materials and wearing considerations
The 45mm steel case measures 13.5mm thick, with a sapphire crystal and 5 ATM water resistance. Red lacquer marks the bezel graduations and pushers; Mario details include an “M” on the crown and an inscription on the screw-down caseback. The launch specification also describes a black leather strap mounted on red rubber, a separate perforated red rubber strap and a steel folding clasp engraved with Mario’s “M.” Special packaging and a travel case are part of the collector presentation. At 45mm and 13.5mm thick, it is a substantial watch on paper. Buyers with smaller wrists should check the dimensions against a watch they already find comfortable rather than assume the smartwatch will wear like a slim traditional timepiece. Without a physical example, it would be misleading to claim how heavy, top-heavy or comfortable it feels, or whether the red accents look refined or toy-like in person. The second strap can shift the look from a more dressed combination toward a more overtly sporty one, but does not change the case size or smartwatch experience.
Five ATM means water-resistant, not waterproof, and the rating alone does not establish that every kind of swimming, showering or water exposure is appropriate. Check TAG Heuer’s care guidance for this exact reference before taking it into water. On a resale example, inspect the strap and case condition as carefully as the screen: rubber can wear or crack, and leather can dry, stain or deform.

Mario’s role is software and motivation
The limited edition launched with an exclusive animated TAG Heuer x Super Mario face and Mario-themed interface details. Activity progress and milestones could trigger animations, making Mario a motivational layer over ordinary exercise tracking. The character is part of the watch’s presentation and feedback—not a replacement for the usual Connected functions. Contemporary coverage also describes the Mario software and collaboration.
A key second-hand question is whether the special face is still on the watch and whether it can be restored if it is not. The launch material confirms the exclusive content at release, but the available documentation does not establish a guaranteed recovery route after a factory reset, account change or app reinstall. Treat restoration as unverified: ask the seller to demonstrate the face and animations working, and do not reset the watch until you have confirmed the content will remain available or can be recovered. A standard Connected watch with a similar downloaded face is not the same limited-edition reference.

The display resolution and size are reported by contemporary secondary sources, rather than presented here as a current TAG Heuer technical-sheet confirmation. The same caution applies to details not set out in the launch specification: do not import specifications from a later Calibre E4 merely because it belongs to the Connected family.
Smartwatch and fitness functions
The watch was designed to handle typical Wear OS tasks such as notifications and apps, alongside TAG Heuer sports tracking. Its heart-rate sensor, positioning capability and motion sensors support fitness estimates and activity logging. GPS-based sessions, heart-rate readings and Mario activity rewards are the practical core of its sports proposition.

These readings are not medical measurements. TAG Heuer’s terms say the data are estimates and the watch is not intended for medical diagnosis or advice. Age, battery condition and software environment also matter when assessing a used example; do not buy it on the assumption that a five-year-old sensor and software stack will deliver current-device accuracy or features.
NFC is not a promise of contactless payments. TAG Heuer’s current FAQ describes Google Wallet support for Calibre E4 on Android, not iOS, and makes availability dependent on factors such as country, bank and card eligibility. That later-model guidance does not prove that payments will work on this specific 2021 Mario reference. Confirm support for the exact watch, phone and region before treating payments as a requirement. TAG Heuer’s Wallet compatibility FAQ sets out the platform distinction.
Battery: a daily-charging smartwatch
TAG Heuer’s original claim was a full day of normal use, specified as 20 hours with one hour of activity. The launch material gives about six hours for sports use with GPS, heart-rate monitoring and music, and approximately 90 minutes to charge. These are original stated figures for the product under specified conditions—not a guarantee for a used watch in 2026.
Always-on display, brightness, Wi-Fi, notifications, GPS, music and workout duration can all affect runtime. So can years of charge cycles. A second-hand unit may fall well short of its original claim; a new-old-stock watch may also have an aged battery simply because it is old. Ask for a real, recent battery demonstration, ideally showing the percentage at the start and after several hours of ordinary use. A watch that needs charging every night is a very different ownership proposition from a conventional mechanical TAG Heuer.
The 2026 software and setup caveat
This is a 2021-era Wear OS watch, not a current-generation device with an assurance of feature parity with today’s smartwatches. TAG Heuer’s support material still documents E3/E4 update procedures, but that is not a promise of a future update schedule for this specific limited edition. It also flags a meaningful setup hurdle: from December 4, 2025, the legacy Wear OS phone app is no longer available through Google Play on Android 15 and newer. TAG Heuer points users to a manual-download route instead. For a buyer who expects ordinary, frictionless app-store setup, that is a material drawback. See the company’s legacy app guidance.
TAG Heuer separately documents this E4 system-update path: on the watch, open Settings > System > Update and install any available system update; then open the watch’s Play Store, choose Manage my apps and install available updates. Its automatic-update instructions require Wi-Fi, the TAG Heuer E3/E4 app, a connected Google account and leaving the watch on its charger overnight. These E4 instructions are useful context, but should not be read as confirmation that every menu, update or support condition is identical on the Mario reference. Compatibility is also version- and feature-dependent. TAG Heuer’s application terms describe supported Android phones as Android 8.0 or later with Google Mobile Services (excluding Go edition and phones without Google Play), or iPhones on iOS 15.0 or later; product-specific tested ranges may differ. Pairing with an iPhone does not mean every feature works as it does on Android, and current requirements may change. If pairing fails on a newer Android phone, first check its Android version and TAG Heuer’s manual-install directions for Android 15 and newer. Confirm that Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Google account access and requested permissions are available, and use the companion app required for the model. Do not factory-reset a watch as an early troubleshooting step: the reset could complicate access to the limited-edition face, whose recovery is not confirmed.
Buying one used: what to verify
By 2026, the Mario edition should be approached as a discontinued or legacy collectible, not as a normal current smartwatch purchase. TAG Heuer’s current Connected collection does not present this Mario reference as a standard current model. There is no current official retail price established here; the $2,150 figure is its original U.S. launch price, not a sensible benchmark for today’s resale market. The current Connected collection is a different product context.
Before paying, ask the seller to demonstrate these points, preferably in a return-protected transaction:
- Identity and completeness: Match the reference and serial information on the watch with the box and paperwork. If collector completeness matters, check for both straps, clasp, proprietary charger, travel case, packaging and documentation.
- Screen and controls: Look for burn-in, dead pixels, significant scratches and touch dead zones. Test the crown and both pushers.
- Charging and battery: Confirm the charger is included and works, the watch reaches full charge, and the battery does not drop rapidly in ordinary use. Do not rely on original launch figures as evidence of present battery health.
- Software and pairing: See it boot to the main interface, confirm the Mario face and animations are present, and test pairing and notifications with a compatible phone. Confirm a reset or app reinstall will not leave the special content unavailable.
- Functions and condition: If practical, test an outdoor GPS lock and a short workout with heart-rate readings. Inspect the straps, case edges, sapphire crystal and caseback for wear or damage.
Counterfeit or modified watches, missing chargers, degraded batteries, worn straps and incomplete boxes are all relevant risks in a resale purchase. A seller’s description is not a substitute for seeing the reference, software and functions work. There is also no basis to assume that a 2,000-piece production run guarantees appreciation: rarity establishes scarcity, not investment performance.
Who should buy it?
It makes sense for someone who specifically wants the TAG Heuer/Nintendo collaboration, values its branded detailing and presentation, and is comfortable treating it primarily as a collectible or occasional-wear novelty. The strongest candidate is a complete, authentic example with healthy battery performance, working charger and Mario content visibly installed.

Skip it if your priority is a current smartwatch, long battery life, advanced training tools, dependable long-term software support or uncomplicated setup on a new Android phone. It is also a poor fit if you use an iPhone and require Android-style payment support, or if you are paying a collector premium without proof of battery condition and software status. A current Connected model may be a more practical TAG Heuer purchase, but it is not a substitute for the Mario collectible. For everyday functionality, current Apple, Google, Samsung or Garmin watches are more relevant comparisons than a five-year-old limited edition; for long-term watch ownership without daily charging, consider a conventional mechanical watch instead.
