Yes—Apple really sold an Apple Watch with an 18-karat gold case. Introduced in 2015, the first-generation Apple Watch Edition came in yellow or rose gold, and U.S. launch prices varied by configuration from about $10,000 to $17,000. It was a luxury-material version of Apple’s original smartwatch, not a more powerful model—and today it is best approached as a collectible rather than a practical alternative to a current watch.
What the original Gold Apple Watch Edition was
The Apple Watch Edition was the luxury tier of Apple’s first smartwatch launch, alongside Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch. In this first-generation collection, “Edition” meant a gold-cased model. It did not mean a software edition or a gold-colored finish.
Apple’s model-identification information distinguishes this original gold Edition from later ceramic and titanium watches that also used the Edition name. A gold-colored aluminum or stainless-steel Apple Watch, a gold-plated modification, and a later ceramic Edition are not the same product. Apple described the case—and gold portions of certain band hardware—as 18-karat gold. Eighteen-karat gold is 750 parts per thousand gold by fineness; the remainder is other metals in the alloy. The entire watch was not gold. The display was sapphire crystal, the back was ceramic, and the electronics were those of the first-generation Apple Watch. The band depended on the configuration: some included sport material, while select buckles or clasps used gold. Apple’s listed case weights are weights of the case assembly, not a statement of how much recoverable pure gold a watch contains. Do not use those figures as a melt-weight calculation.
Sizes, model numbers and finishes
Apple’s technical specifications list two model numbers and four rear-cap color combinations for each size. “Cap” refers to the color of the rear ceramic component, not a different case material.

First-generation specifications
The Edition’s premium was chiefly in its materials, presentation and positioning. The gold case did not make its electronics more capable than those in other first-generation Apple Watch models.

How much it cost and why prices varied
At U.S. launch, prices started at about $10,000 and reached $17,000 for the most expensive documented configurations. Price depended on size, gold color and band; versions with gold hardware, including certain Modern Buckle or Classic Buckle configurations, occupied the upper end. Those are U.S. launch prices, not a universal worldwide price list. Currency, tax treatment and local availability could differ. Contemporary coverage described limited quantities and select-store availability in the launch period: The Guardian’s launch coverage. The $17,000 figure therefore applies to a top configuration, not every gold Edition.
Why Apple made it—and why the gold version disappeared
A luxury position for a new kind of Apple product
Apple introduced the Edition as the luxury collection in its first smartwatch lineup. The price and precious-metal construction placed it in the conversation about luxury watches and fashion accessories as well as consumer technology. Contemporary coverage framed it in those terms, including The Guardian and ABC News. It is reasonable to read the launch as an attempt to establish Apple Watch as a luxury accessory, but that interpretation is not a publicly established explanation of Apple’s strategy.
From gold to ceramic, then no Edition in the lineup
The gold Edition had a short product life. Apple replaced it in 2016 with a ceramic Apple Watch Edition, then no longer offered an Edition model with the Series 4 lineup in 2018. The product-line changes are documented; a single definitive reason for them is not. It would be speculation to say the gold model was discontinued because it failed or to assign a sales result without evidence. A ceramic Edition is not an 18-karat gold Edition. Titanium Edition models from later generations are different again. The shared name marks a place in Apple’s line, not continuity of material or a claim that every Edition watch is gold.

It is an obsolete first-generation computer, not a current smartwatch. Apple’s archived specifications describe original hardware and watchOS 2; they do not establish compatibility with a buyer’s current iPhone, access to current software, or active repair support. Apple’s identification page helps identify old models, but identification is not evidence that Apple sells or actively supports them as current products.

A successful pairing with one older phone does not guarantee pairing with a buyer’s phone. Verify any claimed function on the exact device and phone combination before purchase.
- Battery: The original up-to-18-hour rating is not a realistic promise for an aged battery. Capacity may be substantially degraded, and a battery may be dead.
- Repair: Parts availability is uncertain. Battery work can risk cosmetic damage to a precious-metal case, affect originality and alter collector appeal. Do not assume Apple will repair or replace the battery.
- Water resistance: The original specification says water resistant, not waterproof. Age, prior opening or repair, and degraded seals mean an old example should not be trusted for swimming or immersion.
- Everyday features: It is not a sound choice for current health monitoring, modern apps and notifications, cellular service, safety features or dependable all-day use.
How to check an example before buying
- Match the model number: The 38mm original is A1553; the 42mm original is A1554. Compare the case markings with Apple’s technical specifications and identification guide.
- Inspect the material and marks: Ask for clear photographs of the case, back, engravings and any country-specific hallmarks. Verify that the case is identified as 18-karat gold; be cautious of plated conversions, aftermarket cases and replicas. Apple notes that marking requirements vary by country in its Edition information.
- Check the band and hardware: Establish whether the band is original and which components are gold. A listing’s use of “Edition” does not prove that the band, buckle, clasp or connectors are genuine or included.
- Request provenance and completeness evidence: Ask for photographs of the watch, serial information, box, charging case, accessories and paperwork. Compare model and serial information with Apple’s identification tools where possible. A complete set may interest collectors, but do not assume it commands a particular premium without comparable completed sales.
- Test the individual watch: If possible, confirm that it boots, charges, responds to touch and pairs with the seller’s phone. Ask for battery-health evidence if the device provides it, and treat an original battery as a material risk.
- Beware mixed or misleading listings: Demo units, aftermarket gold cases, gold-plated donor watches, mixed-part assemblies, fake paperwork and packaging, or a ceramic/titanium model described simply as “Edition” can all muddy provenance. Verify the object rather than relying on the listing title.

Its value can depend on gold content, condition, working state, originality, band configuration, packaging, provenance and collector interest. No current resale price or investment return is established here. A serious valuation may require both a watch specialist, who can assess originality and provenance, and a precious-metals specialist, whose estimate may focus on metal content.
