The Lifeclock One is a licensed, wearable recreation of Snake Plissken’s countdown timer from John Carpenter’s Escape from New York. Ridgewood Watch Company keeps the oversized case, red LED look and mission-clock styling, then adds Bluetooth notifications, alarms, step counting and other practical functions. The result is best understood as a movie prop that happens to be a connected watch—not a modern Apple Watch or Garmin rival.
From cinematic countdown timer to working wearable
In the 1981 film, Snake’s wrist device is essentially a rugged countdown timer tied to his mission deadline. The Lifeclock One is an engineered reinterpretation rather than the original production prop. The company describes it as an officially licensed replica and says it is designed and assembled in the United States; those are manufacturer claims, with Escape from New York identified on its site as a Studiocanal trademark.
Its visual language is deliberately theatrical: an oversized rectangular case, bright red display, movie-related markings and a strap that can be worn with leather or Velcro. The Snake Edition uses a machined 360 brass enclosure, while the darker Gullfire Edition uses 7075-T7 aluminum with a black MIL-A-8625 Type III Class 2 hard-anodized finish. Both versions use a 316L stainless-steel or anodized-aluminum back, stainless screws and film-inspired detailing.
Optional engraved backs have included the film logo, USPF insignia, Snake Plissken artwork, a Manhattan Island Prison map and custom text of up to 50 characters. That makes the watch as much a personalized display piece as a daily timekeeper.

It should not be called an exact physical duplicate. The case and styling follow the prop closely, but the electronics, display and internal construction were redesigned to support additional functions.

Bluetooth phone features
Paired with an iOS or Android phone, the watch is advertised to show incoming and missed calls, voicemail, SMS and iMessage alerts, and push notifications. It can also act as a remote camera shutter and accept phone-based control. The manufacturer has named services including Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest and LinkedIn, but those references are historical compatibility claims, not a guarantee that every app still works with current operating systems or that the companion software remains available.
Activity and onboard hardware
Independent step counting and activity monitoring are listed features. The hardware includes an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, vibration motor and ambient-light sensor. Nothing in the available specifications verifies heart-rate monitoring, ECG, blood-oxygen readings, GPS, sleep analysis, cellular service or medical functions. “Activity monitor” should therefore be read as basic movement tracking, not comprehensive health tracking.

Why its red display is more complicated than it looks
The film prop used conventional seven-segment LEDs. Lifeclock One’s display uses 77 independently controlled LEDs arranged as six custom 11-segment SMD units, with approximately 0.39-inch (10 mm) character height and red 640-nanometer filtering. The display is direct-driven rather than multiplexed.
That redesign matters because seven-segment digits cannot render many letters cleanly. The extra segments allow the watch to show more legible notification text while preserving the unmistakable red, industrial appearance. It remains a low-information, glanceable display rather than a miniature smartphone screen: there is no verified touchscreen or app ecosystem.
Battery, connectivity and claimed specifications
Ridgewood lists a 3.7-volt, 480-mAh battery (2.0 Wh), magnetic USB charging, Bluetooth Low Energy at 2.4 GHz, a Nordic nRF51422 system-on-chip with a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0 processor, 256 kB of flash and 32 kB of RAM, a real-time clock, FPGA, vibration motor and nine-axis MEMS motion sensor.

The claimed runtime is about three days, or up to six days with power optimizations enabled. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a current independent test. A remaining unit may be old stock, so lithium-ion aging, storage conditions, notification volume and charging history can materially reduce runtime.

- No verified GPS or turn-by-turn navigation
- No verified heart-rate, ECG or blood-oxygen sensors
- No verified cellular connection, voice assistant or rich on-watch messaging
- No verified app store or current firmware-support program
- No clearly documented current water-resistance rating
Unless the manufacturer confirms otherwise, treat it as unsuitable for swimming, showering or immersion. A retailer’s description of one version as splash resistant should not be generalized to every edition.
Choosing an edition—and a strap
The brass Snake Edition is the closest visual match to the film and develops a distinctive metal finish over time. The Gullfire is lighter-looking, black and more stealth-oriented, with black leather and black accents. Historical listings also show a Chrome Edition, although those listings are no longer active purchase evidence.

This is a large prop replica, not a conventional small/medium/large watch case. BigBadToyStore lists a total band length of 10 inches. Check wrist measurements and whether you prefer the buckle or Velcro arrangement before buying.

The official product pages remain online, but the site shows the Gullfire Edition as sold out. BigBadToyStore has listed the watch at $399.99 and also marks it sold out. Touch of Modern pages show older prices roughly from $379.99 to $599 and are marked sold out or sale-ended. The original 2017 coverage cited a $399 starting price. None of those figures establishes a current manufacturer price or live inventory.

If you find a new or used unit, confirm that it includes the magnetic charger, ask about battery condition, verify whether the companion app can still be installed on your phone, and obtain clear warranty and return terms. A high secondary-market price may reflect scarcity rather than current software support.

Who should buy it?
It makes sense for an Escape from New York collector, prop enthusiast or retro-tech fan who values the licensed design, dramatic red display and conversation value. Basic alarms, timers, world clocks, notifications and step counting make it more usable than a static costume replica.
Skip it as a primary smartwatch if you need dependable fitness metrics, GPS, swimming support, navigation, a broad app ecosystem, cellular communication or an established repair and update pipeline. Conventional digital watches are cheaper for timekeeping; Apple, Samsung, Google, Garmin and Fitbit devices are far stronger for modern connected and health features.
Verdict
The Lifeclock One succeeds on its own terms: it turns one of cinema’s most recognizable countdown watches into a functioning, notification-focused wearable. Its central compromise is also its appeal. The huge case, red LEDs and prop styling prioritize cinematic authenticity over discreet ergonomics, long battery life and contemporary smartwatch depth. Buy it as wearable movie memorabilia with useful extras—not as a feature-equivalent replacement for a current mainstream smartwatch.
